RetroStation: Shadow Of The Colossus – a PS2 masterpiece with the most awesome horse in games

OPM: As taglines go, ‘into the unknown, ride forth’ isn’t the most attention-grabbing. Even more so when you think of the alternatives Team Ico could have gone with for Shadow Of The Colossus: a game where you stand on the shoulders of giants… then repeatedly stab them to sad, stone-faced death. And yet those five little words perfectly capture the central charm of this enigmatic work of art.

SOTC's
platforming and shooting game mechanics and elements,

in game storytelling technique,

minimalist-get rid of all the unnecessary BS-Less is More game design

colossal boss fights with real time emotional conflict on the player's emotions

intended unpredictable horse behavior and horse riding play

tons of open world secrets embedded inside the game's code

Epic soundtrack

and so much more

All these completely changed how games are made forever!

many of the game elements true game genius Ueda are all over the 7th gen video games

this is why PS2 is hands down the greatest game machine ever made!

Thank heavens for Sony.

Give me the Last Guardian please

I love SOTC, but this line -'real time emotional conflict on the player's emotions' - made me want to vomit.

miyamoto3861d ago (Edited 3861d ago )

dude, if killing innocent colossi makes you happy like you kill innocent people with no remorse in GTA, then I know where you are coming from.

You can vomit all day because SOTC is for gamers with conscience and morals.

SOTC is the best open world game ever made.

So you've looked at my post history, worked out I like GTA, and have made a full report on my personality based on that.

You should work at Fox News, you'd fit right in.

This game as well as Ico say to me that the wait for The Last Guardian will be worth it. I believe in Fumito Ueda & his team in delivering a memorable experience unlike anything we will ever see.

They proved it with Ico & did it again with SotC. Sure they hit some development snags along the way, evident in trying to realize the vision that is Ueda & they dreamed too big for the PS3. With the PS4 they have the tools & resources to maybe realize Ueda's dream.

If that meant starting from scratch (which i think is what has happened) than so be it. After all these years & people are still talking about Ico & SotC, one can only imagine what the experience of The Last Guardian will be like.

Finally got to play this game on the PS3's HD collection. The only issue I had with it was the controls which worked for the most part but could get pretty frustrating at times depending on what you were doing. I loved this game immensely and I had to hold back tears at the end of it. Truly a classic in every sense.

Masterpiece. Loved being a colossus!!!

Come onnnnnnn........The Last Guardian!!!!

Actually I think Darksiders had the best horse in video games. Then recent Dynasty Warriors 8 and then SOTC. I should have to scream for my horse minimum of 5 times before it realizes I'm trying to call it, make its easy towards me and auto-mount it. SOTC in many ways is amazing but if there was one thing that annoyed me was Argo.

Zachary M. Cain said: Shadow of the Colossus is hailed as one of the best action-adventure titles of its time. The game was originally released for the PlayStation 2 all the way back in 2005. It was so good in fact, it got a remastered version in 2018 for the PlayStation 4 and was well received by old and new fans alike. Let’s revisit this iconic classic in 2024 and see how well it holds up to its past reputation.

Daman Shelley from NoobFeed writes - Dragon's Dogma is truly a one-of-a-kind game, and there really is no other game like it, but there are a few that come close. I can still hear the title screen music in my head after nearly 12 years. Loved every minute of it.

MrNinosan94d ago

I have no issues filling my time til DD2.
Granblue Fantasy: Relink, Infinite Wealth and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will probably me more than enough.
More terrified I won't be done in time.

Try not to burn yourself out before the game releases. This is going to be a long and immersive RPG like the first one.

The games in this article are all great and I believe the people who are excited for Dragons Dogma 2 probably already played most of those games.

For now, I recommend you prepare yourself for long play sessions if you will be picking up Dragons Dogma at launch.
