The Witcher 3 Dev on DualShock 4 Touchpad: “Not Going to Waste Our Time” if it Doesn’t Suit the Game

"We recently spoke to Peter Gelencser, Senior Level Designer over at CD Projekt RED about the upcoming next-generation open world RPG, namely The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt."

Another misleading title just to get traffic....

“I think a lot of things like that are being considered. I can’t really say anything specific on that. I mean, we’re experimenting a lot of things, because with the new hardware, the next gen consoles are offering a lot of things which we are very happy about because of the possibilities. So let’s use them if we can. But again, story first, game first. We’re not going to waste our time into something that does not serve the purpose of the story and your experience.”

wishingW3L3865d ago

maybe you missed this part: "IF" it Doesn’t Suit the Game.

mewhy323865d ago

They've got the right idea. If it doesn't make sense then don't force it. Not like micro$oft forcing a kinect spy camera with every purchase of the bone whether the gamers like it or not. Hey that sounds a lot like the Don Mattrick attitude of E3.

Blacktric3865d ago (Edited 3865d ago )

Exactly. If people who visit the site have extremely short attention spans and can't read a 20 word long title properly before clicking the link, that's their problem.

And I do agree with what they said. There's no need to waste time to implement extra control options if it doesn't fit the game and possibly going to end up being gimmicky.

gameseveryday3865d ago

"We’re not going to waste our time into something that does not serve the purpose of the story and your experience."

I think you missed the 'if' in the title.

ZBlacktt3865d ago

Think about it. Does the Dev really come off as harsh as the title leads everyone to believe? Of course not....

dantesparda3865d ago (Edited 3865d ago )

Im with ZBlacktt, the title does make it seem harsher, therefore more flamebait-ish. Its obvious as hell.

And to Blaze, what are you yapping about, Kinect isnt mandatory either. If they (devs) use it they use it, i honestly dont care either way, cuz i could care less for either (touchpad or Kinect).

Hicken3865d ago

Nobody missed the "if" in the title. But the title makes it sound as if it's speaking ONLY about the touchpad, as opposed to them talking about ANYTHING pertaining to BOTH consoles. It's a misleading, hit-seeking title and everybody commenting here knows it.

Still, the trolls like Blaze929, LaChance, Belking, and Dan_scruggs take what they want out of it and start spewing BS, which is exactly what the author wanted.

Blaze9293865d ago (Edited 3865d ago )

See this is the problem we faced with Sony "features" this gen on PS3 - they leave it up to developers to make things work or not with the hardware they provide.

Of course you can't really make them support the touchpad but at the same time, i don't see anyone jumping for joy about the idea of using it....like the sixaxis.

So no doubt the most we might see from this feature come from exclusives and/or first-party games.

EDIT:

@Idba - ahh Ubisoft. Watch Dogs and Assassins Cred 4 Cool, who else?

@Volkama - "Doesn't mean it will suit every game, but that's not a fault."

i mean technically, every developer could say "it didnt suit our game." We've seen this happen, on PS3.

Idba3865d ago

were already seeing the touchpad being used by Ubisoft for example. And Sony isnt pushing the developers to use all the features with the PS4 because they want the developers to make their own game

Volkama3865d ago

I'm sure the touchpad thing is fully integrated and supported in the dev tools. Doesn't mean it will suit every game, but that's not a fault.

Xsilver3865d ago (Edited 3865d ago )

lets get one thing straight a touchpad is way more useful than the sixaxis so i'm pretty u will see a lot of uses in games since every new device has a touchpad example like tablets, phones and smart tv remotes and laptops so don't count it out yet.
http://www.pushsquare.com/n... the benefits of a touchpad.

ShwankyShpanky3865d ago

"they leave it up to developers to make things work or not with the hardware they provide"

So does MS have a stipulation that a dev MUST use Kinect? Nope... just a stipulation that the customer MUST BUY the Kinect.

Unlike Kinect, the dev does have a guarantee that the touchpad will be connected at all times.

devwan3865d ago (Edited 3865d ago )

@Blaze929 Read the article and not just the title next time.

People have been saying really good things about the touchpad if only you took the time to read articles and not just sensationalist headlines.

The touchpad is just like a laptop's trackpad and it's also clickable - why do you assume that's not going to be useful when games are ported from PC? It readily gives more UI possibilities there right out of the box.

Many devs are, quite obviously, using it to make UIs more intuitive such as Blizzard for Diablo III inventory and Dice with BF4 battlelog UI. Away from UIs, there's more creative use of it in-game with titles such as Assassin's Creed 4, Watch Dogs, Infamous SS and Warframe to name a few.

The touchpad might not make sense in every game, but in some it will. It's not just a gimmick Sony are pushing devs to use like tilt, a 2nd screen , a camera you talk and wave at or a wand you flail around with - it's a technology that has already been included in billions of devices for user interaction in a multitude of different ways and it's right there at your fingertips along with all the buttons where gamers can easily make use of it.

Seriously... title could just as easily been

"The Witcher 3 Dev on Kinect: “Not Going to Waste Our Time” if it Doesn’t Suit the Game"

Yes, they *asked* about the DS4, but the response covered both consoles.

"with the new hardware, the *next gen consoleS* are offering a lot of things"

Hell, could have just as easily been

"The Witcher 3 Dev on DualShock 4 Touchpad (or Kinect): “we are very happy about [it] because of the possibilities”

OC_MurphysLaw3865d ago

I think the problem with the title of this story is that the author / editor of the site doesn't understand how to properly use quotes ("...") when using a quote but that seems to be par for the course these days.

devwan3865d ago

@Dlacy13g Doesn't know how or purposefully created a title that he knew would get 10x the clicks and debate.

StoutBEER3865d ago

Mew you are one biased dude. The damn thing doebnt need to be plugged in anymore. People bitched (rightfully so) they changed it. And now people bitch about them changing it?! That's some bullshit. And don't give me that 'It's too late' bullshit. If you don't want an X1 fine. Just shut the fuck up about it already. The console wars are tired.

This is very understandable, Gameplay and story should be the main focus but hey if the touchpad can be put to good use to benefit the gameplay then use it don't just make it tacked on.

LaChance3865d ago

They just arent interested in gimmicks. This is a no joke studio and not a 1st party Sony studio so they dont have to give a damn if they dont feel like it.

dantesparda3865d ago

And Kinect is even more a gimmick, but i could care less about either one.

DoctorJones3865d ago

I doubt it will be used much by many devs really. It's a feature , like the six-axis, that will barely be touched on, quite literally. It will be involved in some games, but mostly as an afterthought.

The 7 Best Western RPGs: Immersive Adventures

RPGs are often huge, sprawling endeavours. With limited playtime, we have to choose wisely, so here's the best western RPGs available today.

SimpleSlave13d ago

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan13d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.

Infinite but not the first two games? Witcher 3 but not the first two games?? GTA V but not literally any of the games before it??? Portal 2 but not the first? Also if you're going to play Shadow of The Colossus play the remaster and not the remake. Can't say I disagree with the list but my man it's all over the place.

Name Last Name37d ago

I mean some sequels are objectively better and you don’t need to play the whole series.

Inverno37d ago

But most of these games have a story to follow, sure you can catch up with a YouTube vid but where's the fun in that?

LucasRuinedChildhood37d ago (Edited 37d ago )

A list like this isn't telling you not to play the previous games if you want to. It's just giving you legendary games to play.

But tbh, you don't always have to force yourself to play every entry in a franchise to get to the better ones.

- The vast majority of Witcher 3 players never played the first 2 and had a great time. The first 2 games aren't in the same league.
- The GTA games are self-contained with the odd fun reference. You can easily jump into any of them.
- The Shadow Of The Colossus remake looks and controls better than the original (plus it has a 60fps option while the remaster is just 30fps). New players will enjoy it more.
- Portal 2 is a lot better than Portal 1 and takes the concept much further gameplay-wise. Storywise, Portal 1 is fairly light too. Not that you shouldn't play it but realistically ... you'd love Portal 2 whether you play it or not (at lot of Portal 2 players have never played 1).

Bioshock 1 is the only one I agree with you on simply because it's one the best games of all time and arguably better than Infinite. No other setting like Rapture.

Looking at the list, I'd recommend playing Uncharted 1 before 2 but no doubt, 2 is the legendary one you have to play.

Inverno36d ago

I get it, but that's just my opinion on his opinion. I just think that before you play a sequel you should still play what came before it. Maybe it's just me but i find it fascinating playing through the first game in a series and seeing how it has evolved through its sequels. Like I said I don't disagree with the list, other than SoTC which I strongly believe the remaster of the original should be played above the remake.

AuraAbjure36d ago

Awesome list! Hot take on Fear (and it's hard af expansion Persaus Mandate!) Bioshock Infinite is stellar, so is the Witcher 3 and you nailed it by having Ocarina of Time. So many fantastic games! Gotta play 'em all! Next one on my list is Prey after I beat Dead Space 2 and Splinter Cell Conviction.
