DriveClub Devs Can’t Confirm 60fps Yet, They’re “Pushing the PS4 Hard” to Achieve That and More

"We haven’t confirmed fps yet except to say that we’re currently running 1080p@30fps. While the PS4 is the most powerful games console the world has ever seen it doesn’t make 60fps achievable by default." - PSLS

looking forward to seeing direct feed with engine sound and no music tomorrow.

FamilyGuy3871d ago

"On fog: “It is unique every time. On the occasions when the clouds roll in and you can only see the tips of those mountains… and the cars in front are casting long shadows towards you as the sun rises from the horizon… and you’re breezing through it all 150mph… it’s utterly sensational!”"

This is what sets DriveClub apart from that other launch title racer. Truly next gen feature that we aren't hearing anything about. These are the aspects that actually tax a game engine making it more difficult to reach that 1080p, 60fps desire. I personally don't mind if it's 1080p at 30fps or 720p at 60fps just as long as it's got these next gen features.

Can't wait to play this, I'll be checking that video out tomorrow too.

AceBlazer133871d ago

I don't get your disagrees, everything you said makes sense. What's the point of going next gen if all w have to show for it are better graphics? I like seeing the subtle(yet drastic) improvements.

aceitman3871d ago

@ familyguy u sir are correct , people don't understand when u put special features like that it takes power to do so hell even the clouds in the sky change ,there not the same all the time and plus its a new ip. why haven't we seen anything new , like night and day cycles , weather in the other launch title racer , ok all they did is make it look pretty but it looks like its copy and paste to me.

4Sh0w3871d ago (Edited 3871d ago )

Hold on are you guys serious 60fps in a racing game doesn't matter now? The other stuff is nice but its fluff this is a driving game and the framerate goes a long way to immerse you in that sense of speed and realism of a race. Yeah OK weather is cool but framerate affects every track, every race, its always part of the game. Its not make or brake but it sounds pretty weak all of a sudden 30fps is OK especially for a next gen racer.

DOMination-3871d ago

I'm sorry but you're making excuses. This is a racing game. I'd rather the devs focus on the handling, cars and tracks and not dynamic clouds in the sky.

Driveclub should be going gold in the next month. A few weeks back it was only 35% complete. They stoll can't say what fps it will be. They haven't even shown any direct video yet. For me they are all warning signs. this game sounds rushed.

Mike134nl3871d ago (Edited 3871d ago )

Hope its a good racergame otherwise it will be a while till the new GT.

thechosenone3871d ago

I'm gonna call it and say that they will hit 60fps/1080. I think they'll reveal all at TGS.

awesomeperson3871d ago

@Domination

No, a month or so ago they were just showing the 35% *build*. That's not to say that's where they were at in that point in time.

And if I'm not mistaken, we did get direct feed last week? And it looks great. Not to mention we're getting direct night feed tomorrow.

Evolution are known for having the graphical quality of their games suddenly improve close to launch, it's just their process. We're seeing it happen here.

The tracks look brilliant, that's what all these features that aren't in similar console racers do. Who is to say the handling isn't great aswell? Just because the studio is taking on more work than purely just the cars in an arcade racer, doesn't mean it is rushed.

Oh, and it is a launch game. Of course things will change up until the very last minute.

Gazondaily3871d ago

So what...the clouds and shadows are more important than FPS in a racer? This is a 'true next gen feature' but Drivatars with more dynamic A.I is ridiculed because of its association with the cloud?

@AceBlazer13

Eh? You say you don't understand why he is getting disagrees but then say "What's the point of going next gen if all w have to show for it are better graphics?"

You do realise he is touting the visuals of the game as opposed to the gameplay right?

FamilyGuy3871d ago (Edited 3871d ago )

Did any of you read the article? I'll post a few of the other bullet points here too to help you guys out sense you prefer reading comments
(I like reading comments too).
-----------------------------

“The game is still in development and will continue to look better and smoother day on day until you get your hands on it. We will keep up to speed with how it progresses, showing you more and more up to launch.”

The tracks in #DriveClub are vast with fully dynamic illumination. The interiors and exteriors of every car in every race are rendered in staggering detail and the underlying physics system is incredibly fluid so that driving feels authentic and responsive. On top of that there’s a lot of live connectivity happening in and around the races too to serve up challenges and reward you and your club for everything you do."

“You can play every track at any time of day. In the video you’ll see tomorrow the time of day is accelerated x30, which is something you can set-up in the game too per race. Rain isn’t being developed for launch.”
“The video tomorrow does not have any music. Just engine audio! In the game you can choose to have music on or off.”
-----------------------------

Obviously they're focusing on the driving mechanics as well, this is Evolution Studios. Maybe you guys never played MotorStorm but it was an amazing game and they've added a few other devs to their camp from other noteworthy driving game focused studios. This is a 1st party Sony Studio.

I'm not trying to downplay 60fps, it would be great if they achieve that, but it being 30fps is definitely not something that would make me not want the game. This game is going to be a beast regardless.

Computersaysno3871d ago

You hardly NEED 60fps for a good racer. Hell console gamers have lived without it for years. It's useful for Sims because it allows the physics engine to update faster with the graphics engine. But some of the greatest racers of all time are 'only' 30fps. Stuff like project Gotham racing which is one of the best of all time and one of my fave racing series is only 30fps but it's still smooth as silk.

If drive club have considerably more advanced visuals and effects than another 60fps racer and it only runs 30fps but a rock solid smooth 30fps nobody should really care that much. I know I wouldn't.

andrewsqual3871d ago

@DOMination- Released a week ago. http://www.gamersyde.com/ne...

Still waiting for Forza 5 direct feed gameplay or ANY of the Gamescom 2013 direct feed trailers (not direct feed gameplay, just the trailers even) from Xbone titles. Fable Anniversary has just been delayed, another game that has had no mention since its announcement and clearly wasn't going to be released in 6 weeks time.

pyramidshead3871d ago

Definitely, Drive Club will be feature packed to improve immersion substantially. It's definitely going to have that edge up on the competition when other games look stale and cartoony in contrast.

JP13693870d ago (Edited 3870d ago )

Dom-
Direct feed video:

http://www.gamersyde.com/ne...

35% complete a month ago? The build that Evo brought to GC was 35% complete. That only means that the demo team was using a version that was at that percentage, it does not mean that development itself was that far along. If you're going to comment on a forum, you might want to make sure you actually know what you're talking about.

As for it going Gold, they have until the end of October and can also release a patch day one.

Edit: And Evo just released a new video:

Well the amount of ram in a system has very little to do with the FPS.
-->If you have too little the game wont run at all, or crash, or it has to move data to the harddrive (which then causes stutters because it's slower to read).
-->If you have enough the game runs smooth
-->If you have double the required amount the game runs still smooth
-->If you have tripple the amount the game still runs smooth

I hope you get my point. If a game requires 2GB of ram and you got 4GB you are good. If you have 8GB you are still good but the game wont profit from the extra ram because it only uses 2GB anyway.

That being said, the extra RAM of the PS4 allows the DEVs to make much bigger games that make use of the extra RAM. You can build a level that uses 4GB RAM instead of a level that uses 512?(ps3). That is a huge difference and that is the biggest change going over to next gen: Bigger Worlds, seamless, no loading times.

The FPS on the other hand are limited by processing power. CPU & GPU. From a look at the specs i think the CPU will be the bottleneck in the PS4 (and xb1). But that is just from a "PC" point of view, who knows what kind of tricks they are using :)
But from the looks of things the ps4 is much more powerful than the ps3, but not gamechangingly powerful. And that statement is based on devs having trouble reaching 1080p/60fps.

I know this post is getting long :) But the fanboys need to see the facts... Do a quick calculation:
640*480 (480p) =
1280*720 (720p) =
1920*1080 (1080p) =
By going from 720p to 1080p the system has ALOT more pixels to push (over double the amount!). Of course there are other factors involved. But it just tells us that PS4/Xb1 are not all that powerful compared to gaming PCs (2012-2013 PCs).

hm i think i got off track a little. End of story: RAM does basically not influence FPS.

pedrof933870d ago

The game looks fantastic already, the DAY/NIGHT cycle and the weather effects will set this game apart.

60FPS on PS5: Unofficial PS5 'FPS Boost' mods are radically improving PS4 back compat

Digital Foundry : Whether it's via FPS Boost or bespoke software upgrades, backwards compatibility on the current-gen consoles delivered an unexpected delight - the ability to liberate older console games from their 30fps limits, running them at 60 frames per second or even higher. FPS Boost did the business for Xbox Series consoles on an impressive range of titles, but there was always the sense that PS5 could do more. It's a hunch that checks out as a range of frame-rate unlocks are available for PS5, covering many must-have games - the major caveat being that only exploitable consoles running on older firmwares are invited to the party.

darthv7297d ago

you love to see new life being breathed into older titles but damn the process to get there. It should be automatic that these work for everyone... not just those who exploit their systems. Really wish Sony and MS would keep this program going officially.

Psychonaut8597d ago

Damn this sucks. I want this shit so bad, but I’m not jailbreaking my console. And frankly I shouldn’t have to. I’m not a tech person, but is it really that hard for developers to unlock the framerate? Or would that have to be a large patch?

dveio97d ago (Edited 97d ago )

"but is it really that hard for developers to unlock the framerate?"

I guess it's not.

But it has become a profitable business if you do so.

So no one would pay for only the framerate patched to being unlocked. So studios need to offer more than that.

But this would take more time, polishing and would cost more money. So they shy away, but won't unlock the framerate, either.

That's just my personal assumption. But from what I can comprehend technically, it shouldn't be difficult to unlock framerates via a patch for older games.

... if it hadn't became a business.

RaidenBlack97d ago (Edited 97d ago )

frame-rate unlock should be free ...
We've seen many devs offer free patches and updates to pretty old PC titles, even bonuses ... so why can't devs offer the frame unlock patch for free (in consultation with the platform-producers) for a title from just a generation earlier?

Einhander197297d ago

RaidenBlack

"frame-rate unlock should be free ..."

Obviously the result of that thinking is that developers aren't even going to do it.

If they had been allowed to charge $5-10 you would see incentivized developers doing it way more often.

People just always want everything for free, but it's not free to make the patch, people have to code it then other people have to test it, and there will always be other costs involved.

If people want dollar store gaming then expect to get what you pay for.

shinoff218396d ago (Edited 96d ago )

Raiden I might be wrong but last I thought it cost money to put patches out on consoles.

As far as me paying for it, I'm not all that interested tbh. Not enough to pay for it with older games, and newer games have been pretty decent about it for the most part.

dumahim97d ago

Sounds like the modder has to go in to make changes to unlock it on a game by game basis. "Simple" enough to do it unofficially, but to have it done officially, they need someone to go in a make that change, put out a patch and put it through certification, which I believe is not necessarily a cheap thing to do. It's questionable if going through this would then give them enough sales to make it worthwhile.

Inverno97d ago

Many games still have physics tied to framerate, i think it's cause they wouldn't want to go in and do anything extra. Then there's the 10 dollar upgrades they rather charge. The problem is that there's no compromise, cause if I could mod my PS4 and all I'd lose is online play then id jailbreak it immediately. Mods have done so much for PC games and they could do the same for consoles, but manufacturers hafto be willing to compromise.

shinoff218396d ago

It's not to hard to do and there's youtube videos that break it down really well. ANyway most of us here arent able to break are console anyway due to being up to date on firmware from playing

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 96d ago
Chocoburger97d ago

Yep, this sucks having to require a jailbreak for something that should be standard in our industry by now. I learned my lesson when PS4 was jailbroken and I didn't keep a console on low firmware for years, but now I'm holding onto two low firmware PS5s specifically because there are features I'll be able to do that you can't do on official firmware, so this will pay off for me soon enough.

Jin_Sakai97d ago

It should be a sin to let these games sit and be stuck at 30fps.

EazyC97d ago

RDR 2 not getting a 60FPS patch for PS5 was a crime.
