Killzone: Shadow Fall “Running Far Above 30 Frames” on PS4, 1500 Challenges Just the Beginning

Arguably the biggest PlayStation 4 launch title this November is Killzone: Shadow Fall, coming to us from the fine folks over at Guerrilla Games. - PSLS

This is my must have title for the PS4 launch, going to have to get the Killzone Vita game to tide me over.

ArchangelMike3872d ago

Dude, that "Killzone Vita game" will more than tide you over. It fantastic, especially the 'contracts' mode, and the Multiplayer is excellent, it's up there with KZ2 and KZ 3 multiplayer.

I can't wait for Shadow Fall.

Maddens Raiders3872d ago (Edited 3872d ago )

I just died from that megaton blast and am seeing bright white light. Please, someone revive me with full health and ammo.

Hatsune-Miku3872d ago (Edited 3872d ago )

Next gen starts on the day killzone shadow fall is released. Graphically the best looking game anywhere.

Eonjay3872d ago

So looks like this is gonna be bona fide 60FPS SP and MP at 1080P. As someone who has played the series, this is gonna be amazing. The SP firefights are always so intense with tons of on screen action. This game is gonna be beautiful.

XB1_PS43872d ago

Holy 1500 challenges batman. Also this is probably the best looking launch title. No Lie.

Foolsjoker3872d ago

Good to hear, downloading it now. Thanks for the heads up! =)

P0werVR3872d ago

through PCSx I can run Shadow of The Collossus at a sustatained 50fps at 1080p...huge difference compared to PS2.

So if they can get this going at around between 45-50fps, KZ is going to be gorgeous.

Can't wait for Deep Down though. Until it's release and more on it that's when I'll get a PS4.

MizTv3872d ago

I agree
It's so damn good

0ut1awed3871d ago

ArchangelMike speaks the truth.

The Vita game defiantly lives up to it's console counterpart.

GiggMan3872d ago

This is the only true next gen title to me. Everything about it screams quality. Battlefield, CoD, Watchdogs, AC4, all look good but I think they will suffer due to being co-developed on current gen hardware. KZ is the only launch title being developed solely for next gen as it's main focus. Can't wait.

Bathyj3872d ago

I think you could throw Second Son into that catagory as well. It looks awesome.

GiggMan3872d ago

At Bathy I'm particularly talking about launch titles. Most launch titles start out as a late current gen title. This doesn't seem that way at all.

Evilsnuggle3872d ago

Killzone SF is the king of NEXT GEN first person shooter. Killzone SF, DEEP DOWN, THE DIVISION, THE WICHER 3 and INFAMOUS Second Son. All 1080p 30-60fps

Bolts3871d ago

I'm sorry but if what was shown of Infamous at E3 is real, it's going to take Killzone to the cleaners.

starchild3872d ago

Guys, they are talking about the multiplayer. Guerrilla have already stated that the single player campaign will run at 30fps.

They have also said that they are aiming for 60fps for the multiplayer. And based on hands on impressions of the multiplayer it seems to have a very variable framerate right now.

"I'll get the big one out of the way: the framerate is highly variable right now. I'd estimate the range was 20 to 60 depending on where in the map I was and what kind of action was happening."
http://www.neogaf.com/forum...

So, Guerrilla is just saying that they are working on it and it is currently running well above 30fps on average.

CGI-Quality3872d ago

They're targeting 60FPS, even for the single player. That's the entire purpose of saying that, because the MP is already running @ 60FPS.

CGI-Quality3872d ago

They are talking about the single player here. The MP was long confirmed to be 60FPS. They are now targeting that for SP.

humbleopinion3872d ago

Maybe that's why they claim now "far above 30fps". They just average the 30fps single and 60fps multi :)

Anyway, having an fps bump over 30 is useless unless they can hit that sweet 60fps spots. Everything in the middle (be it 35, 45 or 55) will simply *decrease* the quality because you will have either screen tears or dropped frames and choppy gameplay. There's pretty much nothing else you can do when the screen refresh rate is 60HZ.

svoulis3872d ago

You do realize that was on Alpha code, thats why it was running between 20 and 60? A lot can happen since then. These guys sit there day in and day out tweaking bug patching, optimizing and all that good stuff. We will see at launch how good the game plays :D

so many hate KZ and write it off as graphics only when KZ2 was excellent and KZ3 was great, yes it may not be halo or get as many sales as halo but its a excellent FPS

can't wait, this along with watch dogs are 2 games i plan on getting day one, here is hoping for a big KZ:Shadow Fall community

Kurt Russell3872d ago (Edited 3872d ago )

I didn't like KZ2 personally. I found the middle of gameplay loading horribly distracting and the gameplay lack lustre.

However I really liked KZ3, as a lot of qualms with the first had been tidied up. I think KZ:SF could be immense if they continue improving on what they've got.

I do think the MP could do with squads though, it would help with cross class team work a little.

*edit: They do all look damn incredible though.

This was my first preorder followed up quickly with Destiny, Watch dogs and BF4.

I think the only must have thing at launch is PS Plus, it will pay itself over in a month for a year's sub.

otherZinc3872d ago

So, to be clear; Killzone: SF isn't running 1080p "native" @ 60fps.

What exactly does running "well above 30fps" mean? Guess it means they can't hit 60fps.

G20WLY3872d ago

Rather than guessing, why not read the article?

Unless you were trolling, of course... ;P

NeloAnjelo3872d ago

I have this pre-ordered. Day 1 Warzone! I can not wait.

KZ: Mercs is fantastic. Look great, plays like KZ, online 4 vs 4 is really addictive and fun. Contracts is also great!

PudgeySan3872d ago

Agreed. I am a die hard fan of the Killzone Series. I am so happy its a launch title.

moparful993871d ago

@fools I literally just beat the campaign to Killzone: Mercenary a couple of minutes ago.. Absolutely amazing game. Lot's of references to the other 3 games in the series and it actually run concurrent with Killzone 2! This game should sell some Vitas... do yoursrlf a favor and buy it.

"It’s running at 1080p, it’s running far above 30 frames – we’re aiming at 60 – so that’s a very good thing."

When it gets there, the fanboys will finally shut their mouths. People need to understand that most first party developers at Sony go straight to the graphics(story is first of course), even if it means sacrificing 30FPS to achieve it. With the PS4, they can go to wherever they feel comfortable with the graphics and remove unnecessary things to improve the framerate with minuscule graphical lose. When that happens, you have this https://www.googledrive.com...

Bigpappy3872d ago

Your developer skills are really shining through in your comments. And that last game you released for the PS4 is the Shyt.

M-M3872d ago

Why thank you, a lot of people enjoyed the improvements on our game from previous iterations. More features will be coming in further updates at launch!

xKugo3872d ago

Honestly the only reason it's not 60 fps now is because the dev kit they built it on was equipped with 4gb of GDDR5 with Sony setting the limit at 2gb of usage. This was before Sony changed the max from 4gb to 8. They confirmed that the build they showed at the reveal and E3 was only using 1.5gb of ram. Furthermore, you don't really need 60 fps for the single player experience because the pace of play for KZ's story is generally slow. 60 fps and above is it's most viable when in face-paced situations. When twitch reactions are prized above anything else. It's already at 60 fps for the multiplayer, so that is the only thing that truly matters.

HeavenlySnipes3872d ago

lol no

I hope you don't actually believe that (the first part of your comment)

GG confirmed the SP is running on s a stable 30FPS

The MP fluctuates between 30-60 FPS, theres too much going on to guarantee a constant 60FPS at all times. Still, having it above 30FPS for the most part is good enough for me

xKugo3872d ago (Edited 3872d ago )

@Below

Sorry to burst your bubble bro, but what I said is correct. The build that they originally built KZ:SF on was based on a dev-kit that only had 4 gb of GDDR5 instead of 8. They said it themselves; you can look it up yourself. If you think a studio as talented as GG couldn't generate a game at 1080p/60fps on 8 gigabytes of the fastest graphics processing RAM on the market, then you are deluded. Frames per second and resolution are limited only by the grade of net-code and bandwidth. The build they had at both the PS4 reveal and E3 were utilizing only 1.5gb of RAM as opposed to however much is used now. Some of you clearly have no idea how all this works, but if your going to disagree at least provide an argument instead stealth disagreeing.

HeavenlySnipes3872d ago

The amount of RAM isn't what allows for better frames per second. Its the CPU

RAM maximizes on what the CPU can do. A lot of RAM means you can have many tasks going on at the same time, but you're really going to get a large boost in FPS with a better CPU. Right now they are working on optimizing the game to work within the parameters of what the CPU can do so that they can have the game look great and run constantly above 30FPS with the target being 60FPS

The higher RAM count that they were given access too just means bigger and higher quality textures, longer lasting small scale destruction etc..

Bolts3871d ago

I'm sick of fanboys talking about the PS4 RAM speed as if it matters in terms of resolution and FPS. These clowns are just regurgitating marketing speak without knowing WTF they're talking about. Unless your game is running at resolutions higher than 1080p then all the bandwidth in the world will do jack shit to help the FPS.

This system is seriously CPU and GPU bound, and that's the area of emphasis when GG is optimizing the game. More than likely the major role of the PS4 RAM bandwidth is geared toward recording live videos without negatively effecting frame rates.

wishingW3L3871d ago (Edited 3871d ago )

@Bolts while part of what you say it's true there are some parts that aren't. Go to google and look for benchmarks of the same card using DDR3 vs GDDR5 and you'll see that the ones with GDDR5 always offer superior performance. Performance that help games run at higher frame-rate and resolution more smoothly.

For now I'm just gonna leave 2 links here, you do the further research:

I have absolutely no interest in this typical 1st person shooter

Waiting for February Infamous: Second Son!

mxrider21993872d ago

there is nothing typical or generic about it excpt for the fact that there are guns in it but its your loss

WeAreLegion3872d ago

Seriously. Killzone is a different beast.

MidnytRain3872d ago (Edited 3872d ago )

I'm getting a "typical" feeling from it too. Guess I'm not a Killzone fan, the exception being KZ2.

palaeomerus3872d ago (Edited 3872d ago )

"there is nothing typical or generic about it except for the fact that there are guns in it but its your loss"

This is totally untrue of the Killzone series so far. Laughably so. Especially for KZ3. The last one had lots of cheap CoD style scripted fun house "cinematic" set pieces, fodder troops with idiot AI that respawn until you cross a tripwire line in the level, snipers who wait for you to see and shoot them so they can tumble from their perch, on rails turret segments, and a Reach-like space-fighter action sequence at the end. Even the very short mech and jet pack parts, and the short token-stealth part in the grotto jungle felt like they were lifted right out of CoD MW3.

Killzone 1 had mantle points instead o jumping and had a bad framerate.

KZ 2 dumped the squad member switching stuff and gave us a game with controller lag which people tried to sell as realism. It also had you playing the shortest trooper ever who came up to everyone else's chest. Rico was an irritating curse machine. KZ had an impaling gun sort of like the stake gun in Painkiller and the rebar crossbow in Half Life 2 that stuck people to walls. It also had some questionable cover mechanics that often seemed to not quite work right.

KZ3 was the shortest one and tried to imitate the Modern warfare Mames and had multiplayer based sort of on a simplified version of the Enemy Territory games (think Quake Wars and Wolfenstein ET). KZ3 dropped the controller lag and corny sense of momentum and made the cover mechanics work a little better.

They were all decent but in no way were they unique.

mxrider21993872d ago (Edited 3872d ago )

@ pala kz3 was very generic MP wise every kz fan hated the MP bc it was a CoD version of KZ was not good at all the only thing fun about KZ3 mp was operations mode that was new and refreshing and i hope they bring that back in kz SF
and the guys post i replied to was about SF not the other KZs

jah-Fu3872d ago

Yeah right, if it doesn't remind anyone of an all around general COD/FPS - looking down the barrel with that HUGE reticle taking up more screen than needed - then i don't know what does. Other stuff thrown in is cool but come it doesn't make it suck but it is what it is.

Bolts3871d ago

Killzone 3 is clearly the worst of the Killzone series because it completely abandoned the identity the franchise established in Killzone 2. A lot of fans were very upset because the CoD like multiplayer were so obvious and out of place. What started as a team shooter is now completely run and gun with absolutely shit class balance.

The fact that they have cheesy deployable blue shields is already a bad sign.

mxrider21993867d ago

@ bolts i mean its just add on content to keep it fresh maybe ull like it who nos but if not make your own warzone with no shields allowed

AceBlazer133872d ago (Edited 3872d ago )

^^^ the amount of stupid in your comment is baffling.

I think your stupidity really peaked when you claimed kz 3 ripped from mw3 even though it came out 7-8 months before.

Angeljuice3872d ago

And the 'corny momentum' comment, because we all know its far more realistic to run around a battlefield at 30mph in all directions whilst wearing full military equipment and having zero momentum ala CoD./s

Majin-vegeta3872d ago

But MP is already 1080 @60 FPS.So im guessing this is SP....

kwiksilver993872d ago (Edited 3872d ago )

i honestly don't think he was talking about sp.
he seems to be taling about the multiplayer portion if anything.
plus according to some people who have played the mp, it wasnt locked on to 60fps.so they're probably working on that.
hope im wrong:)

Killzone After a Decade in Hibernation

It's been 10 years since Killzone: Shadow Fall arrived for PlayStation 4 early adopters, and there's no sign of another sequel.

Obscure_Observer154d ago

Sadly it was dumped by Guerrilla to focus on Horizon games only. Mainline, VR and Multiplayer.

Vengeance1138154d ago

lmao sadly? Are you pretending to have actually played the series lol Sorry bud, no Killzone on Xbox.

Cacabunga154d ago

Rimeskeem154d ago

“Dumped”

I think it’s called moving on.

Barlos153d ago (Edited 153d ago )

They brought out 4 main games and 2 spin offs: one on PSP and one on Vita. That's a decent run for any series. I also understand that Shadow Fall wasn't a success commercially despite it coming out at PS4 launch, and as a big Killzone fan even I couldn't get into it, so I think Sony/Guerrilla could see it was time to move on.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love another Killzone game in the vein of KZ2 but it's just not happening. Hell, I'd even take a remake or remaster of the first 3 games.

I'd hardly say it was "dumped" though, it spanned 3 console generations and 2 handheld generations.

1Victor153d ago

@obscured:”Sadly it was dumped by Guerrilla to focus on Horizon games only. Mainline, VR and Multiplayer”

Happily it was dumped by Guerrilla to focus on Horizon games only. Mainline, VR and Multiplayer( edited to reflect the writer true feelings and allegiance)
Kill zone was a FPS far ahead of its glitched competitors with nauseating bad camera angles, 10 years old screaming curses like a drunk sailor and bot aiming assist.

ChasterMies153d ago

“Sadly”?

The Horizon games were among the best games of all time. Killzone Shadowfail wasn’t.

Shane Kim153d ago

True, but damn the memories of KZ2 multiplayer. Still no MP as fun as that to this date.

Mr_cheese153d ago

Dumped and shelved are two different things

Tacoboto153d ago

I loved the KZ2+3 campaigns and MP in 2. There could be so much more done with the franchise. Horizon although good, I wish they'd go back to this wonderful IP. Take a break from Horizon please.

Flawlessmic154d ago

Agreed dude, I would absolutely love a reboot of the series, one can only hope that either resistance or killzone makes a return.

Have nothing but great memories, especially of the first 3 games, but all 4 were show stoppers graphically.

blackbeld154d ago

To making it a successful reboot they have to change that buttons layout! Make it playable like the cod button layout. Otherwise I’ll skipping it again.

Rynxie153d ago

And that's the reason why many fps games failed. Instead of being original and catering to it's fans, they tried to make it like cod. No, kz doesn't need cod button layout. It needs to be like it was on kz2 or balanced liked kz3.

Lightning77154d ago

I think Kill Zone would do great in Sony's LS push. As well as MAG reboot and bring back Resistance into LS.

Sharky231153d ago

@Lightning77

I think WarHawk would have been a great Live service game.

thorstein154d ago

Killzone games were so polished. The gameplay was just simple joy. MP was one of the best experiences.

Guerrilla Announces Shutdown of Servers for Killzone: Shadow Fall and More

In August, online servers for several PlayStation games will shut down, leaving their multiplayer functions unplayable.

purple101635d ago

whrere on earth is the next killzone, im soooOOO thirsty for some proper weighted, (but still fast when running/sprinting) fps gamplay, it felt sooso so good on ps3, with that, lets be honest, very small, quite uncomfortable sixaxis dualshock controller, that was just too small for western sized hands, ok for japanese kids i suppose was the point>??

now with PS5 controller, it would be totally masterfull.

ClayRules2012635d ago

I hear you. I want some NEW Killzone, especially on PS5, with the PS5 DualSense controller with that ever so impressive DualSense of an experience Haptic feedback!

Knowing how far Guerrilla has come since Horizon: Zero Dawn, Killzone can only benefit greatly from their ever growing talent!!

Bobertt634d ago

I think Sony has given up on their exclusive shooters. They haven't released a remaster for the Resistance series or a new SOCOM game either. I don't think Guerilla is in a rush to make Killzone since they have Horizon now too :(.

635d ago
Outside_ofthe_Box635d ago

All I want is for them to build Killzone 2 with multiplayer included from the ground up, keep the gameplay the same, and I'll be happy.

GG with KZ3 and Shafowfall haven't been able to match KZ2 so I don't really have faith in another sequel.

Unfortunate that KZ2 came out during COD era where every game that didn't pay like Modern Warfare was deemed garbage. KZ2's multiplayer is definitely an all time great.

Michiel1989635d ago

since when was kz2 deemed garbage?

MizHDTV635d ago

Right on dude
KZ2 was just a special game to me

sinspirit635d ago

I'd love KZ2 multiplayer again. I also think they could easily incorporate a mode to compete with Battlefield style game modes

Seraphim635d ago

KZ2 was one of maybe a handful of games I actually put time into online. What a blast!! And the campaign was excellent as well. I certainly miss that dark world. Still ashamed I never buttoned up that Platinum.

Storm23635d ago

A remake of Killzone 2 with the same grittiness and feel on PS5 would be f*cking incredible. The SP and MP were just perfect. I played the sh*t out of that game. Would happily pay a lot of money for that.

DarXyde635d ago

Honestly, I don't like FPS games. They're not for me, but I do agree that there was something about KZ2 multiplayer that even someone like me enjoyed.

Sony really needs to get better about tearing down servers. I don't like that they shut them down.

shadowT635d ago

agree, KZ2 was a masterpiece

Muigi634d ago

KZ3 multiplayer was better imo.

Outside_ofthe_Box634d ago (Edited 634d ago )

@Michiel1989
"since when was kz2 deemed garbage?"

As with anything, things don't get the appreciation it deserves until way after it's release.

KZ2 got a lot of flak for it's weighty controls that many mistook for input lag. People didn't like that it wasn't a twitch shooter like CoD. You also had people saying things like "it feels like you're controlling a midget", "enemies take too long to die" (you can't pray and spray in kz2. You have to shoot in bursts for your shots to be more accurate), people complained about the sniping, etc.

This led to a lot of changes in KZ3 that turned the vets off like reducing the amount of variables for bullet damage, getting rid of spawn grenades, etc.

BISHOP-BRASIL634d ago

@DarXyde

I don't think there's much Sony or any other company in that position can do much different about it... Keeping servers running simply cost money, these gomes don't generate none anymore, so eventually they need to pull the plug.

Astrokis634d ago

KZ2 was definitely better then KZ3, but the third one still had strong suits. It’s been many years but I remember something about Shadow Fall being made by a team at GG that did NOT do KZ2 and KZ3 multiplayer which is why it felt different. I remember when I found that out it made a lot of sense about Shadow Falls multiplayer feeling so off.

Horizon zero dawn sold more copies than all of the killzone franchise combined including spin offs on handheld. I guess that's the reason why won't see killzone from guerilla soon. There is at least one more mainline horizon coming out and their second team is working on horizon VR I believe. So it's gonna be a while unless another studio takes over.

Profchaos635d ago

I've been playing a lot of Killzone 2 on rpcs3 with a duelsense combined with the ability to remap controls to a modern standard and bump the game to 60fps it shows that we really need a remaster to probably the best killzone game to date although shadowfall technically beats it in the graphics department art style was so different that they are incomparable

I’d be happy with a release of KZ2

Killzone went to the same place as Socom and Mag, more money in 25 hour single player games with no servers to maintain. Socom was literally the reason I bought a PS2, Resistance FOM the reason I bought a PS3, all gone now.

Killzone has never been weighted correctly, the jumping never worked.

A new properly-weighted shooter in the Killzone series would be great. More like Killzone 1 and 2 than SF.

I think the issue comes from the fact that the Helghast side is sympathetic while looking like Nazi stormtroopers. The Trump age has led artists to avoid this look entirely.

I feel something may be announced soon

The sixaxis felt fine in my hands since they're small, but the ps5 really made me feel the difference. So ergonomic.

Killzone 2 was/is so good and it still looks good today. The multiplayer was fun as well. If they make a new Killzone I hope it is the style of Killzone 2.

I wish Sony didn’t abandon Resistance and Killzone. Those are some of my favorite series on PlayStation. If they’re not gonna make anymore, then maybe a remastered collection of each could be negotiated.

DefenderOfDoom2635d ago

KILLZONE 2 was my reason for buying a PS3. If a new KILLZONE or RESISTANCE was coming out in 22 I would try to buy a PS5 immediately.

Lightning77635d ago

SSOD2 would be big for Sony. The only reason they would be interested in it is if they can turn it into a live service game.

In which I can see that happening.

Hauntedasylum8635d ago

Hell yeah, brother. You and me both.

VanDamme634d ago

For anyone trying to understand @Lightning77’s comment, they had a typo, this should clarify:

SOD2
Superoxide dismutase 2, mitochondrial, also known as manganese-dependent superoxide dismutase, is an enzyme which in humans is encoded by the SOD2 gene on chromosome 6.

After 5 killzone games including portable Sony felt it needed a break I wouldn't say its abandoned however I believe we may randomly get a ps5 remaster with improved lighting to test the waters and eventually a full blown new game after all you can't just leave shadowfall on that ending

Horizon is priority now its a mega franchise for them maybe after Horizon they might revisit.

Imalwaysright634d ago

I refuse to play for online play but there is one game that would make pay for it and that's Resistance Fall of Man. That's the only game that would make me throw my principles out of the window without feeling ashamed of myself.

Remember in the mid 2000’s when nearly every developer started to do FPS or linear third person? Now nearly every developer wants to do open world exclusively because it’s the easiest type of game to leave things out and then expand upon the world with DLC.

So many fond memories of both Shadowfall and Mercenaries Vita online! Shadowfall's SP may have been weak, but the MP was still a ton of fun. I had a lot of time in both, and it's especially tough seeing the Vita's best mp experience get shut down.

RIP my old friends.

In my opinion, I thought the single player games was really decent too and was treated quite harshly by the critics, but then, I think the Killzone franchise as a whole was kinda under rated by the critics. I always enjoyed the story in these games and I liked the slower, more deliberate gunplay too.

I remember getting my PS4 on day 1 and the first game I installed was Killzone Shadowfall, my workmates and I would play it for hours on end, the mode whish switched between game modes was brilliant.

A world without Killzone Online. That it’s come to this…
