Polygon: "Tales of Xillia is loaded with recycled mechanics and story that's oozing well-worn plot devices out of its JRPG pores, right down to its predictable cast and "save the world" theme. It's cheesy and weird in some places, but heartfelt and genuinely interesting in others. The game's fast-paced battles kept me alert and engaged through hundreds of encounters, and for better or worse, there's no shortage of story. Tales of Xillia feels like wrapping yourself in a comfortable blanket. It's like an old friend. It exemplifies everything the genre is today — good and bad — and serves as a reminder of why I fell in love with JRPGs in the first place."
Today it was announced that the gaming and anime industry has lost another beloved artist and creator. Mutsumi Inomata has passed away.
The Tales Of series are some of the best RPGs I've ever played, and the characters are a big reason for that. I don't think I played a single game in the series that I didn't enjoy. Rest in peace.
Wow she was the character designer for Tales of Destiny one of my favorites of all time =(
I love the Tales games. Phantasia will always be my favorite. Ironically I felt like as the series progressed the character design became too “anime cliche.”
There's a surprising amount of overlap between Marvel's Mad Titan and a lesser-known Tales villains -- but which is the better baddie?
The Tales games may be less recognizable than the Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy games, but that doesn't mean that they aren't worth playing!
“Tales series is considered one of the top three Japanese RPG series next to RPG giants like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy.”
How you gonna talk about the top three JRPG franchises and not mention Pokémon, the top selling series in the genre?
This is how the top JRPG series stack up
1. Pokémon - 340M
2. Final Fantasy - 144M
3. Dragon Quest - 78M
4. Monster Hunter - 52M
5. Kingdom Hearts - 30M
6. Souls - 25M
7. Tales of - 20M
I'm loving it. Still haven't beaten it just yet as I'm taking my time to really enjoy the experience. As always with a Tales game, I just can't get enough of the characters and their interactions/dialogue. :]
lol Polyogon .
I liked playing Xillia and did 2 playthroughs.
However I agree that it offers nothing new and refreshing. As such a rating between 7 - 8 is good enough in my book.
I've heared somewhere that Xillia was rushed out the door. IMO it didn't really felt rushed, but I have played better RPG's. Having said that, I'll still pick up Tales of Xillia 2 as soon as it hits the stores.
I'd personally give it an 8 so a 7 is not that far off. Maybe it's a maturity thing but the awkward teen RPG's were fine when I was an awkward teen but many JRGP's never really grew up. Much of the dialogue and interactions are over the top. Ivar is just plain irritating. Xenogears, Xenoblade Chronicles, Suikoden I and II, Persona, Valkyria Chronicles, Chrono Trigger, FF Tactics are to me gold standard RPG's for their time.
I am new to the tales series having only played Graces F and Xillia but neither of those games have won me over, good games, but not great. My favorite unique feature of the Tales games is the grade shop. Adds to replayability.
this is no funny anymore.
