'Racially insensitive' computer game faces challenge over title

SMH "Its creator has called it ''one of the great untold stories of the twentieth century'' but the forthcoming Australian-made computer game Whore of The Orient has been slammed by a prominent member of the Australian-Chinese community as an ''attempt to disgrace Chinese culture, history and traditions''."

maniacmayhem3885d ago (Edited 3885d ago )

I use to have a friend who would get fighting mad whenever someone would call him or refer other Asians as oriental. For the longest time when I was younger I never even knew that that was a wrong and offensive term.

jony_dols3885d ago (Edited 3885d ago )

But Whore of the Orient isn't a racial slure; it actually refers to Shanghai's strong trading links with the West in the 19th century & the acceptance of western culture by Shanghai citizens.

Shanghai-ans were referred to as Whores of the Orient by Chinese outsiders for embracing this newfangled globalization.

This Australian-Chinese protest group needs a history lesson, which is pretty damn ironic as they are a Chinese community integrated into a Western society.

This whole 'controversy' = Storm in a teacup.

TekoIie3885d ago (Edited 3885d ago )

Honestly I only discovered that Oriental was an offensive term last year. Personally I dont think this "outrage" is entirely justified.

Isnt the comparison between "Oriental" and the "N-word" a bit off? Isnt Oriental partially a regional thing whereas the other is purely race? Someone please correct me if I'm wrong because this is a genuine question :)

iceman063885d ago (Edited 3885d ago )

From what I understand, the term Oriental should only be used when referring to objects (clothes, food, rugs, etc.). Use of the word was common place, but still considered stereotypical, for years.
Asian should be used when referring to the people. I lived in Japan as a kid, so I kind of missed the "oriental" phase. I was just in the Far East. That being said, the term Whore of the Orient refers to a time when Shanghai was looked down upon for it's trading and links to the west and western culture. It's a tidbit of "controversial" history.

SilentGuard3885d ago (Edited 3885d ago )

People looking for things to complain and whine about. The title said Orient, as in the Orient Express, referring to the east. It didn't say "The Whore Oriental", as in calling someone oriental. This is like the difference between calling someone African and well, you know. As for the Chinese community take a hike. We'd all be shocked to hear what they refer to everyone else as.

TheGrimReaper3885d ago

"That was a very bad time in China, and people don't want or need to have that dragged up."

Really???

Every WWII game:

That was a very bad time in Germany, and people don't want or need to have that dragged up.

Never heard that one xD

Since when is "Orient" offensive or racist?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

I think he is overreacting. Just remember the countless usage of the N-Word in Bioshock Infinite.

specialguest3885d ago

I'm Asian and I think its an extreme overreaction to compare orient to the n-word. I rarely hear it used these days, but when I do, I know it's not out of insulting intentions. The people who use that word are typically older and unaware that it's an out of date word no longer used to refer to east Asians sorta like the word negro for black Americans.

Unlike the n-word which is tied in with hundreds of yrs of hate, the word oriental is typically only associated with a stereotype of a far east culture of that long ago era.

iceman063885d ago

I completely agree. The N-word is so completely tied, socially and culturally, to countless heinous acts of hatred, fear-mongering, and oppression that it's difficult to find another word with the same impact. That said, I can't really dictate what is offensive and to whom.

These articles are pointless and just cause arguments that are not solvable on a forum. Move on, nothing to see here.

This week the crew got together to talk about the new Ghostbusters game in relation to the release of the film reboot and they might have had opinions you wouldn’t expect! They also introduced a new segment (that might be weekly… maybe) called Hideo Kojima Quote of the Show, or HKQOTS for short!

I've already got one for the next episode I'm on.

I knew the game was in developmental hell, but didn't realise the whole thing had been given up on and everyone had moved on. Loved L.A. Noire, and this sounds like it would have been even better,

Walter_Official2860d ago

Im surprised it took this long for the news to break.

SlappingOysters2860d ago

I wouldn't mind knowing what Bendan McNamara is doing then if it is not this?

Walter_Official2860d ago

Hopefully another game similar to L.A. Noire. I just want another crime fighting game, and The Whore of the Orient just didn't look similar to me from the gameplay reveal a few years back.

jay22860d ago

stupid people not keeping it alive don't need COD, BF **** etc.

Chaos_Order2860d ago

This is some disappointing news. I loved LA Noire and was looking forward to this. I just those involved are able to get jobs again. :(

Chaos_Raiden2860d ago (Edited 2860d ago )

That is disappointing. I love L.A. Noire, so I am hoping that Team Bondi will make another game similar to it.

EDIT: My mistake, the developer is KMM.

Battlefront 3 will most likely launch at the same day Star Wars 7 is launching. And so will Ratchet and Clank.

Quantum Break is a game that might get delayed. I mean Alan Wake was announced in 2005 and was released in 2010. So that's five years. Hopefully that doesn't happen here.

AC Victory and COD will definitely be released this year.

slappy5083339d ago

Do we know when the Ratchet and clank movie is coming out? Now the game is something I'm really looking forward to if they are being released concurrently. I bet a lot of these games are set for holiday 2015

BloodAddiction3339d ago

Final Fantasy XV? Persona 5? Kingdom Hearts 3? where are those games on the list?

itsjustexuma3339d ago

This list is missing so many games

showtimefolks3339d ago

i think out of these FF has the best chances to come out in west during fall 2015

we still have few events before the fall so we will get release dates, i am kind of worried about new Battlefront gamer because if its launching with new star wars movie, did it get enough time in development? I mean EA got the License and started working on it not long ago

did EA start working on this a while back and the license was announced at a later date maybe?

JacketsNest1013338d ago

Not to mention lack of Xenoblade. How is Ratchet and Clank a bigger release than all of the games we've mentioned?

sander97023339d ago

Did the guy who made this list shake one of those magic 8-balls for the chance of every game slipping into 2016?
