Playing Ico for the First Time

While most console retail releases these days focus on the big and grandiose, it's important to remember the importance of intimacy and the power of silence. Ico, while not nearly as fondly remembered as Shadow of the Colossus, proves that game design can, in fact, employ subtly to great ends.

This game differs from what you see today. It's slow, silent and don't have much of a story attached to it.

The casual player won't find this game attractive.

I've played earlier this summer, got it for free on PS+, at first i didn't like but it grow on me and I ended up liking it a lot.

The same thing for SOTC, but this one I really enjoyed it.

Classics.

Always a great title. Loved it and SotC!

Craigatorian3889d ago

I didn't like Ico & SoC as much as other people did. I hated Ico, but enjoyed SoC

Anon19743889d ago (Edited 3889d ago )

I know it's not popular to admit, but I didn't care for either of them. I bought both and ended up not finishing either. Beautiful to look at, but I just found the pacing a bit slow for my liking. And I might as well come out and say it now. I didn't like Journey. I keep trying to play it, because I know I should love it and I just can't do it. There's just something about the pacing that's not doing it for me.

There. I said it. I also have never been able to get into Beyond Good and Evil. And Led Zeppelin is overrated. And I hated Mulholland Drive. Just hated it.

@darkride66...just bare your soul why don't ya!?!? That last part was pretty damn funny! Gotta say that I loved Ico, like Shadow, didn't finish Beyond Good and Evil, as for the rest...I think I agree!!! LOL

Easily one of the best games

nosferatuzodd3889d ago (Edited 3889d ago )

this is when i started to see becoming work of art and master piece games like ico and shadow of the colossus

Darth Gamer3889d ago

Two of my absolute favorite games of all time. I still have my original copy of ICO but for some reason, I traded in my copy of SoTC and am very upset I did. I have recently digitally bought it on the PSN an on replaying it sometime. I have played ICO twice and have been trying to get my 8 year old son to sit down and enjoy it but it has one thing going against it with him, it doesn't have the word Mario in the Title. lol I created a monster when I introduced him to Mario and sometimes I wish I didn't. lol Anyway, great game and eagerly await the third game but I'm not holding my breath.

Craigatorian3889d ago

I'm 19 (even though i played the game for the first time when I was 13) and had trouble with Ico's puzzles, either I'm stupid or your kid just isn't into these types of games (like all kids).

warewolfSS3889d ago

I never played this.
I remember the first time I played shadow of collosus. Damn. A next gen simlle tasked game of sheer beauty and size like that would be awesome.

A good number of these games are pretty well-known in the gaming community. I don't know who this 'no one' is, but they might not have been a gamer during the time of the PS2. ICO? The Warriors? BULLY?!? C'mon now.

FullmetalRoyale291d ago

Certainly not as interesting as a spoon controversy, right?

Terry_B292d ago

Not one of these is pretty "forgotten". But what you can forget are bad lists that need 15 clicks.

Terry_B291d ago

edit..why the fuck was this shit approved by 2 guys after all?

luckytrouble291d ago

Because the approval system is fundamentally flawed. The amount shouldn't decrease for approval over time, nobody should be able to have more than one vote, and pending content should be more visible so those measures don't feel necessary to push through less immediately popular pieces.

The number of ways this system can be intentionally or accidentally abused so crap like this can get through has been ridiculous for ages now.

Petebloodyonion292d ago

The title is misleading, it should be 15 best ps2 that you always ignored (hence the title of the video).
These games are not unknow but often left out when talking PS2 great game.
The warrior is a great game but let's be frank just mention it in a discussion amongs friends and half the crowd will go " OMG I forgot about that! "

Christopher290d ago

I think that's just a factor of time. Most movies from the 80s/90s that are great are like that with me as well. They're still great, just been so much between now and then that you can't keep it all at the forefront of your mind.

banger88292d ago

15 games on 15 pages? F*** that. I'll save you a click:

The Thing
Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution
Deus Ex: The Conspiracy
Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly
Twisted Metal Black
ICO
Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy
Transformers
Silent Hill 4: The Room
Red Dead Revolver
War of the Monsters
XIII
Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction
The Warriors
Bully

Agreed. Some heroes put on their pants one leg at a time like the rest of us. Thank you.

MrNinosan291d ago

I remember and know all the game exceot War of the Monsters...
But maybe my name is "no one"

Phoenix76291d ago

Last time I checked (a year ago) War of the Monsters was available to buy as a ps2 classic on the ps store. Know I've still got my disc copy and fairly sure it's in my digital library

This video game journalist must not know any gamers, not be on any gaming sites, and is probably young only know of these games because of an older sibling.

None of those games are forgotten and most are spoken of fondly fairly often.

This was a fun look at Ico. So hard to believe it's been 20 years already. Where does time go?
