PS2 is Edge's "Best Consoles of Past 20 Years", X360 in Second Place and PS3 in Seventh

Edge Magazine Issue 258 will go on sale in just few days time, but details regarding what it will feature has already arrived.

The publication has awarded Playstation 2 as "Best Consoles" in a special coverage on "10 best consoles of the past 20 Years". Microsoft's Xbox 360 comes in second place with original Playstation console in third place. Playstation 3 is way behind in seventh place.

Check out Top Ten list.

theWB273885d ago (Edited 3885d ago )

360 in second. I can roll with that. I did miss out entirely on the PS2 save for a few games of Madden. Went with Dreamcast and had some good times.

Only a few games were as exciting as booting up Shenmue for the first time...few games since have achieved that kind of immersion.

@ShugaCane
I wrote 8 words about the 360 and more about Dreamcast and Shenmue. Have your opinion. I'm not gonna try n convince you otherwise. I had as much fun with my Genesis as any console, but I'm not complaining about it not being on the list. It's just a magazines opinion...let'em have it.

ShugaCane3885d ago (Edited 3885d ago )

PS2 Number One, okay. Stellar System

But 360 number 2, over the PS1 and PS3 ? Just no. PS1 has classic games that marked generations of gamers. Cult games. Mythic games. Masterpieces. Resident Evil. Final Fantasy 7, 8, 9. Xenogears. Dino Crisis. Vagrant Story. Soul Reaver. And so many others. PS3 ? Well. UC series, TLOU, Heavy Rain, Journey. Come on. I don't want to trash-talk the 360, it's a good console if you like FPS and Shooters or if you're an Online games addict. But still, it's NOT a better system than the PS1 or the PS3. And yes, that's an opinion.

iamnsuperman3885d ago (Edited 3885d ago )

The bigger question is why on earth is the PS3 behind the gamecube and 64 (I can see a better case can be made for the 64 but the gamecube? come on)

black0o3885d ago (Edited 3885d ago )

agreed PS1 with FF7 and games like Tombraider parasite eve, RE .. etc should be in 2nd not a FPS box ps1 set new rules in the console world and started the idea of being fully entertainment box offering VCD and Audio CD and games
it's not even fair to compare ps1 to x360 ps1 is on another LVL

I've no problem with X360 been before ps3 but ps1 as well that's BS

jackanderson19853885d ago (Edited 3885d ago )

look back at the sales and see which games were the consistent high sellers... i belive COD managed 13mil sales from the 360 BLOPS 2 alone... FPS was this generation there's no denying it.

did the PS3 have some absolutely class games yeah no doubt but FPS's made this generation and owned it.

although i do agree PS1 should have been either number 1 or number 2

@mike32uk

yeah you can't stand it but 13 million users (for the latest one) of the 360 alone love it and that's not counting the PS3 sales either.

shuga put in the UC series and Journey in his original comment, i personally hated those games but to someone else they were the best thing ever.

taste is an opinion but the fact is FPSs were the dominant brand this generation and the 360 was the console for FPSs

mike32UK3885d ago

@jackanderson1985 just because something sells better doesn't mean it is better. Personally I cannot stand COD. Justin Bieber sells a hell of a lot more albums than many of the far greater artists and bands in the world. That certainly doesn't mean his music is better

Ares84HU3885d ago

For me:

#1 PS1
#2 PS3
#3 PS2
#4 PSVita
#5 PSP
#6 Dreamcast
#7 Sega Genesis
#8 N64
#9 SNES
#10 NES

None of the Xbox consoles even make my top ten list.

ZodTheRipper3885d ago (Edited 3885d ago )

My Top5 are
1. PS3
2. N64
3. PS1
4. PS2
5. GBA

PS3 took the top spot because of BluRay and excellent first party support. Hopefully Ps4 can top that =)

Heartnet3885d ago

Tbh Innovation was probably a huge factor in the list.. and certain consoles did more for the industry than others... and Cult games are exactly that cult... they dont have a huge audience so they wont be at the top of the list...

jony_dols3885d ago (Edited 3885d ago )

1. PS2
2. SNES
3. PS1
4. N64
5. PS3
6. Gamecube
7. Dreamcast
8. Xbox 360
9. Megadrive/Genesis
10. Xbox

Wells that's my top 10 consoles (handhelds excluded).

How could the 360 be NO.2?

It's failure rate in the first few hardware revisions was unacceptable, marring what was a promising launch. It's exclusive library shrunk as the years went on (with games like Bioshock, Limbo, Mass Effect & GTA4 DLCs all going multiplatform) whilst it's competitor, the PS3, list of exclusives only expanded. Good console, but certainly not the 2nd best.

Brazz3885d ago (Edited 3885d ago )

360 over PS1 ??? no, just no...
360 can be above ps3, maybe one is 4 and the other is 5-6, but put this diference is ridiculus! hell Microsoft have a finger in this shit.

malokevi3884d ago

360 pushed the envelope of online console gaming. This upcoming generation is a direct result of everything Microsoft did with the 360 UI/online suite.

#dealwithit?

Clarence3884d ago (Edited 3884d ago )

I agree. 360 had the highest failure rate of any console. I would put the 1st Nintendo higher than the 360. The PS3 introduced bluray, web browser, Upgradable hard drives. I won't even comment on the PS1. We might still be using cartridges if not for the PS1.

HammadTheBeast3884d ago

@malokevi

Congrats. Meanwhile, before the Xbox was even born, PS1 and PS2 were pushing gaming as a whole.

Online MP was always on PC, 360 implemented it well on consoles.

Mounce3884d ago

I'd go with a list of:

PS1
PS2
SNES(is 22-23 years rather but still, best consoles)
NES
N64
PS3
PSP
360

and the rest there-after. I put 360 even beneath PSP because I destroyed my PSP by how much I played it with MGS Peacewalker and FF7: Crisis Core and a few others. 360 only truly offered me Lost Odyssey, everything else I could find on PC or PS3 so, 360 existed almost primarily as a means to help the industry with being Competition, but as for the console in itself? Beyond the timed exclusives, Microsofts' PR frustrations and the original faulty rate that basically was at 45% until their new 360 Slim came out? It was one of the worst consoles of all the generations of gaming history, it may have gotten games that many of us or you guys love or area hyped or such, like Halo. Just, I don't see it being worth considered being an awesome console when my NES and SNES of in the 90's could last longer and held less viral bullshit and misinformation behind it :/ It's uses were in making competition better, aka, Sony becoming arrogant and needing to be kicked down once or twice before they reigned back up to being a great company for Gamers, outside of that, Microsofts' Xbox hasn't really given me much of anything I care for outside of Lost Odyssey :l

LOL_WUT3884d ago

The PS2 and the N64 where both really good consoles and are really high on my list. You had the best of both worlds. ;)

XboxFun3884d ago

I'm going to go with this list for myself:

1. SNES
2. NES
3. PS2
4. Xbox 360
5. Dreamcast
6. N64
7. Intellivison
8. PS3
9. Genesis
10. Master System

Megaton3884d ago

Yeah, 360 at #2 is laughable. I'm not sure if I'd even put it in the top 5. My top 3 would be PS1, PS2 and SNES, in that order.

grailly3884d ago

I don't think I'm in a good position to list the best consoles as I've always had an inexplicable preference for playstation, but I do know that edge makes rubbish lists. Remember that list with mojang being the best developer ever?

turgore3884d ago

Lies, lies and more lies. Remember the early years of the PS3 when it was super expensive and had like no games ? Thats why it is not as good as the 360 when you look at the entire picture.

Anzil3884d ago

only reason i cannot trust is cause i find edge super opinionated and arrogant..that is all....and i dont find xbox ever brought anything to the table other then console online(huge) and console polish( if this makes any sense lol) but to me a console is all about the games and sony and somewhat nin has always dominated on that front so ps3 even ranks higher than 360 on my list even tho i used my 360 more this gen

TotalHitman3884d ago

1. PS2
2. PS1
3. PS3
4. XBOX
5. Gamecube
6. Xbox 360
7. Nintendo 64
8. Dreamcast

The 5th and 6th generations were a great time to be a gamer. There was so much variety.

uncharted563884d ago

PS2 deserves first spot but srsly 360 and ps3 dont deserve second spot. I will take any nintendo console before gamecube for the second spot. They have helped get gaming where it is today.

Tw1tch3D3884d ago (Edited 3884d ago )

My personal list:

1. PS2 (the only era that felt like true gaming)
2. PC
3. Xbox 360
4. Xbox 360 (went through 2 during this time)
5. PC
6. PS3
7. PC
8. PC
9. PC
10. PC

...yup, that sums up my last 20 years of gaming. Other than PC, I spent more time playing on Xbox 360 compared to other consoles.

For some reason, PS gamers claim "true gamers" but for some reason online was lackluster and there was just a lot more "game life" on Live than PSN.

guitarded773884d ago

People can put whatever they want, wherever they want on their little lists. Then they can take said list and shove it directly up their cartridge slot.

Just because a publication makes a list, it doesn't mean it's true. Enjoy what you want, however you want.

strifeblade3884d ago

@Ares
nobody gives a **** what a psfanboys list is. Edge is respected multiplat game magazine- not a ps fanboy like you. Putting the vita in that list? You are pathetic- everyone knows nintendo owns the handheld and as of right now psp library is much stronger than the vita so you fail big time.

JC_Denton3884d ago

Edge magazine is the single worst game reviewing group in existence. Please don't take this list remotely seriously.

twinspectre3884d ago

49 disagree ??? WTF is happening ?
maybe people don't know What Playstation 1 is
XBOX 360 is the biggest joke of gaming history because 360 introduced DLC's
a whole of generation with Halo and Gears WTF is going on ???? 2nd place Damn
Playstation introduced RESIDENT EVIL , FINAL FANTASY VII , METAL GEAR SOLID , TOMB RAIDER and other great game that thanks for Xbox360 generation those games get worst
Damn Xbox fanboys they don't Know FACTS

redwin3884d ago

I loved my ps2, but it wasn't innovative. The games where very good but the system was just a hardware upgrade from the ps1, even with the use of the cd was first introduced by turbofx first with street fighter 1 and Y's books 1&2. A few years later ps1 came out. The dream cast I would say brought more to the table with their online multyplayer. Remember that games is just one aspect of the hole package. We have to take into account the innovations that have impacted today's game culture. Hardrive, controllers, online interface and multyplayer. I think that ps1 with its DVD player and immense game library kicked started this game generation.

pixelsword3884d ago (Edited 3884d ago )

I don't know about the 360 being over the PS1 (The PS1 was the game-changer that brought us into the modern disc age), and I think the original xbox needs to be above the 360 (XBL was the first serious and successful attempt to make online gaming an extension of the console and the game instead of something you merely go to) but it does belong over the PS3; not for any advantages the 360 had, but what the PS3 didn't realize in terms of what executives said it would do in terms of running 120fps/1080p games. The PS3 had very few 60fps/1080p games and none of them ran a rock-solid 60fps that I can recall. The PS3 was more powerful than the 360 from what I've seen, but because of the very new architecture and a severe lack of developer support in it's devkits, the power wasn't obvious in all but a few 3rd party games; the exclusives were very good though but even until now, no PS3 exclusive games pulled off what Lair did in 2007 in terms of resolution and scale.

In terms of the games overall, I'd say that the PS3 has a decisive edge over the 360 in that category.

MrBlanco3884d ago (Edited 3884d ago )

for me

1.PS2
2.Atari
3.PS1
4.PS3
5.SNES
6.X360
7.NES
8.Genesis

those are the only things i have owned anyway

thekhurg3885d ago

I can't. There's no way that the Xbox 360 is better than the SNES. The volume of amazing on that console is something that only the PS2 can claim to have reached.

Saigon3885d ago

I so agree with that. I believe the SNES should be number 2 myself. I am not certain what Edge was looking at but I think they need to truly reconsider. I look at it in the hopes of revolutionizing gaming in itself. The 360 and the PS3 in my opinion did not do that. the only landscape they changed were for social and media impact. Not saying they shouldn't be in the top 10 but the 360 is up there way too high.

lastdual3884d ago

I too would be tempted to rank the SNES at #1, but truth be told I don't play it nearly as much as my 360 or PS3 these days.

Since Bethesda games are among my favorites of the past decade, I would probably have to go with the 360 if I was being honest. PC is king, but for consoles, being stuck with the PS3 versions of Skyrim and Fallout would just be too painful.

twinspectre3884d ago

SNES my first console should be 2nd :)
i was 3 year old when my parent bought me this amazing console

humbleopinion3884d ago

While you're basically just being nostalgic here (the SNES had some amazing games but can't hold a candle to the X360 catalog, not to mention the amount of innovation offered by each console) - you missed the whole "PAST 20 YEARS" headline. The SNES is older than that.

thekhurg3884d ago

@humble

SNES came out 23 years ago and lasted well over three years. It's part of the last 20 years category. There is no nostalgia on my part either. I don't fall for that, not in games or movies. The SNES catalog was gigantic and it broke ground for a lot of genres.

humbleopinion3883d ago (Edited 3883d ago )

Does it matter how long it lasted!? I can still play my NES and my Atari. But it doesn't change the fact the article is talking stricly about consoles made in the past 20 years. Learn the difference.

Also, the X360 catalog is much bigger than the NES catalog: It's about twice as big.

thekhurg3882d ago

@humble

You're wrong, period.

It states 10 best consoles of the past 20 years. The SNES was part of the last 20 years because there were games being actively developed and released for the console during that timeframe. Hell, we hadn't even switched over to the PS1/N64 era 20 years ago.

Get a grip on reality and learn some fucking reading comprehension.

humbleopinion3879d ago (Edited 3879d ago )

@thekhurg

It amazes me how people can act like such arrogant turds yet keep failing so miserably.

Seriously? You're asking me about reading comprehension!? Read the goddamn Edge article, which clearly states THEIR CRITERIA for choosing what qualifies for a console INTRODUCED in the past 20 years. Why making a fool out of yourself making absurd comments when it's so easy to spend two minutes on the internet to read the original article before you reply?

+ Show (5) more repliesLast reply 3879d ago
snipab8t3885d ago

Agreed. I thought this was a pretty decent list. PS2 is well deserving of no. 1 and the 360 was undoubtedly one of the best consoles for current generation games. I would have loved to see the Super Nintendo on the list as I had so many fun times with Super Mario World and Donkey Kong when I was a kid.

kickerz3885d ago

I would nearly put Dreamcast number 1 spot. man I had alot of fun on that system

mcstorm3884d ago

I love the dc and for me it was very under rated system in fact I still have mine. But the console that is top of my List is the n64 as I had endless fun in my teen years with my makes on maro kart, golden eye, perfect dark, wcw vs now and more.

Then it would be the Amiga 32 2nd Dreamcast 3rd snes 4th.

We are all different though and would find it hard to all agree on our top 5 consoles.

SuperLupe3885d ago

My list:

PS1
PS2
360

Its not just having a lot of exclusives. I couldn't care less for 80% of PS exclusives. Games like Twisted Metal, Starhawk, MAG, PS Battle Royale (I think thats the name) Motorstorm, LBP Karting, Resistance series etc etc arent games that stand out whatsoever.
I could add more to the list its just that since they dont stand out I can hardly remember them.

On top of that what makes a console great is also the "popularity" factor. PS1 and PS2 were pretty much the consoles that made gaming mainstream. The 360 with Live popularized online multiplayer and the FPS/shooter culture we have now (may you like the genre or not).

IMO the 360 was a more momorable console than the PS3. Maybe because it was MS's first succesful console and maybe because the PS3 was Sony's least succesful console I dont know.

ZodTheRipper3885d ago (Edited 3885d ago )

Your argumentation makes no sense at all. And popularity is the last thing one should care about on a console. It's most important factor is games and the X360 is falling short in that aspect ...it would be in my top10 (primarily because of XBL) but nowhere near second place.

Saigon3884d ago

@zod18

Well said sir, bubbles for you. I also feel that 360 deserves a top 10 vote mainly due to XBL.

dcj05243884d ago

Warhawk is the best online game this gen imo. How does it NOT standout. Jets that can hover like a helicopter then transform back into a jet doesn't stand-out? 32 players on consoles in 2007 doesn't standout.I don't even understand. Please explain you're logic to me.

Magicite3885d ago

PS2 all the way. 360 doesnt deserve even 10th place.

callahan093884d ago (Edited 3884d ago )

What it really comes down to is that the 360 and Ps3 are probably, in all honesty, the two most evenly matched consoles in gaming history. They have very similar power, very similar features, and very similar game libraries (probably 90% of games available are on both of them). To have them this far separated apart on the list screams of favoritism towards one that isn't deserved by actual merit of features and quality of games on offer.

They should probably be adjacent on the list if not in an outright tie at the same position. We all have our preference of one over the other, I am sure, but we all have valid reasons for our preference. That's what I mean by evenly matched. I don't believe Edge has anything against Sony, but for some reason I think they have always had a bias towards the 360. It comes off in their criticisms.

They have a lingering nascent sense of bias towards playing on the 360 that tends to see them giving a free pass to 360 games that feature similar flaws as the ones for which they tear down PS3 games... And it leads to them perceiving their 360 experiences as better, which is why they have given something like 3 or 4 PS3 exclusives a score of 9+ over the years, versus like 25 games for the 360, despite the media consensus being that the two consoles each have a similar number of games at that quality.

UnHoly_One3884d ago

They are certainly very evenly matched, but for me it's no contest in favor of the 360. By far the better controller, better online service, and better experience with that 90% of games you mentioned that are on both consoles.

The PS3 is a decent machine, but for me there is no reason to use it aside from a few exclusive games, because the 360 does everything else better.

All my opinion, and it certainly won't be a popular opinion on this website, but for me and everyone I know and play games with, that's how it was this generation.

rainslacker3884d ago

Honestly, given the number of great system over the years, the PS3 and the 360 would be rather low on the list. I imagine they made it 20 years so they could exclude the NES/SNES, or Genesis. Also the PS1 brought a hell of a lot more to gaming than the 360 did, and in some ways I would say it deserves top spot over the PS2. There are more memorable games on the PS1 for many gamers than the 360 could claim. PS3 has a lot of memorable games as well, but PS1/2 still trumps it for me.

All of it is subjective though. People can prefer the consoles in any order they like. Bottom line is, we have had a lot of great games to play over the last 20+ years.

Maddens Raiders3884d ago

lol @ Edge...they knew what they were doing. Oh well off to play 7th best console. xD

SkippyPaccino3884d ago

Hey, hey, hey... It's Mr. 7th place to you... Have some manners ;-)

AirJohnston3884d ago

360 should be like, 8th to me. I would put the SNES, PS1, PS3, 64, DS, GBA, and (personally) Gamecube all over the 360

bigfish3884d ago

what! I wouldn't even put 360 in the top 10! There was hardly any games for it let alone the RROD issue....

I heard mags do this to attract attention and sell more, it a basic marketing strategy to get more sales and money to publish future issues, its a sad fact but it has been happening for a while...you have to think about what stories will make the mag sell to keep it profitable and jobs safe I guess.....

snipab8t3884d ago Show
3-4-53884d ago

I love my 360, but 5 years from now, I'm never going to want to play a single game on it because 90% of all the best experienced on 360 were via online game modes within the first year of said game's existence.

They are so reliant upon that initial online experience that they can't be played any other way.

SNES/Sega Genesis games = still appealing

N64/PS1/PS2 games = still appealing

Even a few gamecube games are still really good.

* Borderlands 1&2 will still be fun 4-5 years from now because you can play solo, but any COD game will be just awful 4-5 years from now.

There is no nostalgic reason for Keeping a 360 or re-buying one.

AngelicIceDiamond3884d ago

Its funny how people say its a "joke" the 360 is second place and are coming up with spins, excuses, "bu, bu, bu."

But nothing, this is the 100th time the rest of the world doesn't think like this site and PS3 is the best thing on the globe.

People forget that First impression is everything. People don't forget about the 600$ price and lack of major games.

PS3 being number 7th and behind the gamecube is a complete joke and ridiculous imo. It ultimately deserves to be up there with PS1, PS2 and Xbox360 because of its great games (now) and superior hardware.

Deadpoolio3884d ago

So that what your saying is that people should be remembering the 360 for it's first impression...That being the 55% failure rate for the first 4 years of the consoles life....Yeah I'm sorry they may have advanced things on the online front but they released a console with a stunningly embarrassing failure rate 55-56% is NOT an acceptable number, nothing should EVER be that high...The PS3 barely had 8%

Imalwaysright3884d ago

PS3? Who cares about the PS3? This was one of the worst generations and neither the PS3 or the 360 deserve a spot on top 5. No, just no. 360 better than PS1, SNES, N64 or Dreamcast? Don't make me laugh.

rainslacker3884d ago (Edited 3884d ago )

The problem with the list is that it's subjective. If it was an objective list, this article didn't list the criteria for these decisions. They took the safe route by saying PS2 was the best, because that is pretty common consensus.

But the 360 at number 2, with PS3 at number 7? That's a huge disparity given that the two systems are relatively equal, and only shows subjective feelings. Objectively, one could say that they provided a very similar experience, whereas PS3 had a rocky start to finish out strong, and the X1 started off strong only to fizzle in the end. Or maybe they were grading based on online community...in which case, I'd say over the course of the generation, they're mostly equal, with a slight upper hand to 360. And no matter how one were to swing it, the PS1 was far more innovative, and provided much better experiences than any current gen system does, so it should beat the 360 and PS3.

Dreamcast at number 10? Dreamcast was the forerunner to what the original XBox became, yet the original Xbox beat it out on this list, and had very few memorable games. DC has a diehard loyal following, and is considered one of the best systems of all time for a reason. How many people do you see going around saying how the original Xbox is the most amazing system ever? None...again, for a reason.

First impressions may be one thing, but long term objective reasons why a console is the best is far more important if they want to hand out awards for these kinds of lists. Hell I was really impressed with the 3DO when I first got my hands on one, but realistically, it would never be considered the best.

Shinox3884d ago

UnHoly_One3884d ago

The 360 should be number one, in my personal opinion. It's certainly my favorite console of all time, and that goes back to the Atari 2600 when I was 5 years old.

A case could be made to put PS2 in second, but I personally would put it third behind the original Xbox.

As for PS3, seventh seems generous, honestly.

Deadpoolio3884d ago

LOL good job Xbot...A the 55% failure rate should shove it further down the list...No respectable piece of anything should ever have a 55% failure rate for the first 4 years of it's life....And the Original Xbox was just garbage..There is No way anything made by microsoft should be above things like PS2, PS1, SNES, NES.....Nothing, they may have advanced online MP but that means absolutely nothing when you release garbage defective hardware knowingly, and they themselves confirmed that they knew it was defective when they released it.

UnHoly_One3884d ago

Sorry but that's my honest opinion.

I don't think the list is really referencing the reliability of the hardware.

Imalwaysright3884d ago

What games on the 360 warrant it the top spot? Halo, Gears or Forza? Have you started gaming this gen??

UnHoly_One3884d ago

There were lots of great games this generation.

I don't see anything on that list that says they are only counting exclusive titles.

There are dozens of spectacular multiplatform games on the 360, some of the best games of all time, I think.

And they are all better when played on a 360 with the superior controller and online service.

Imalwaysright3884d ago

So in your opinion the 360 is the best console because of multiplatform games?! OOkeeeey......

rainslacker3884d ago (Edited 3884d ago )

Better question, what games warrant the original xbox beating out either the PS1 or PS2 on your list? I really can't fathom that.

If your going to pull out the MS innovated with the original XBox, I have to ask, shouldn't the Dreamcast beat out the original Xbox since it was basically the Xbox 1.0 and was where MS started it's foray into the home console market....yep, MS had a hand in making the Dreamcast. To date, there are a lot more memorable games on the Dreamcast than the original Xbox.

So, objectively speaking, why would the original Xbox and 360 beat out all the other systems in your mind? I'd really like to know what your criteria for grading is.

sentury1113884d ago

My favorite system as well. I've been playing since NES. I've owned all PS systems and all Nintendo but the Gamecube and U. Had Genesis and Dreamcast. No og xbox.

My order is:
x360
Genesis
N64
NES
PS1
PS3
PS2
SNES
Dreamcast
Wii

PC would be after 360 if that counted.

Sorry, but while PS was popular when I was playing PC mostly and didn't touch them much.

I'm a die-hard Xbox fan. But I can agree that the PS2 was the best, then 360.

showtimefolks3884d ago

PS2 #1 deserved

Xbox 360 not so much, PS1 should be #2 just because of FF7 and MGS

than super Nintendo

but since this is edge, they want hits

Rodney253884d ago

#1:PS2
#2:PS3
#3:PS1
#4:SNES
#5:Nintendo 64
#6:Dreamcast
#7:Sega Genesis
#8:Xbox
#9:Xbox 360
#10:GameCube

twinspectre3884d ago

VforVideogames3884d ago

Rodney253883d ago

The disagrees they sting. Naw I saw it coming. I just like my PS3 better I can play my PS1 games on it. I think you're letting nostalgia cloud your judgement. *Prepares for disagrees*

Pope_Kaz_Hirai_II3884d ago

360 second my ass oh wait its edge magazine that explains alot.

xtremeimport3884d ago

There is no way that the 360 is better than the N64.

Psn8003884d ago (Edited 3884d ago )

Without doubt not forgetting the original Ps1 as well , I often wonder how we had so much fun in those days no online setup but the games were great .

NumOnePS3FanBoy3884d ago

LOL xbox360 as #2 hahahaha. That is laughable

I made some great memories with ps2
ps2 had the best games: FFx, MgS2,3 , GTA ..... etc
and some great new IP: DMC, GOW ..etc

PS2 is the king of consoles for all time ... in my opinion

HolyDuck3885d ago

I still play PS2 with my best friend, Dynasty Warriors 3 was our game 8 years ago.

black0o3885d ago

DW4 was for me .. I was addicted to that game and unlocking the LV 10 for every weapon And all the hidden characters

Mario183885d ago (Edited 3885d ago )

Yes Dynasty Warriors 3 was great. I loved Gan Ning

ape0073885d ago (Edited 3885d ago )

ps2 is definateley one of all time greats if not the best system ever but lacked many FPS games

black0o3885d ago

and that's why ps2 rocks

Master-H3884d ago

Wat.jpeg
CoD1,2,3
Medal of Honor Frontlines, rising sun, and other ones..
>>>>BLACK<< << (best modern day fps before COD4 came out imo)
.
Besides that the ps2 had Tenchu Wrath of Heaven , and that invalidates any need for FPS games lol

GarrusVakarian3885d ago

How can the PS3 be seventh with the amount of great exclusives that it has?

GameCents3885d ago (Edited 3885d ago )

Gaming culture...I have a PS3 but that darn controller just doesn't inspire game culture in me. I use it for blu-rays and other media, Uncharted 3 was the last game I played on it a couple of months ago.

The DS2 was great when my hands didn't know better, but now it just looks and feels like a child's toy to me. I even went as far as trading my BF3 on PS3 for the 360 version, double discs and all.

PSN seems so detached from the main system, almost like an app and not a feature the console was built around. You really feel that gaming online should be free on PS3.

PSN ID Hanyani cause I know I'll be accused of not owning one. Haven't been online in forever though.

trouble_bubble3885d ago (Edited 3885d ago )

Gaming culture? Sounds like a made-up buzzword, especially in the context of a controller. Wouldn't an important aspect of pro-gaming culture be still releasing a bevy of respected exclusives in 2013 like sly, ninokuni, mlb13 the show, tlou, dragons crown, beyond, gow, gt6 etc? As opposed to only a couple stinkers like 'Dark'?

I don't get the "childs toy" comment either when the 360 controller is the one still using AA batteries and has face buttons colored like skittles. But to each his own

Bundi3885d ago (Edited 3885d ago )

Hehehe, look at em disagrees!

I don't think its a buzz word, I agree Xbox 360 has a more game centric feel to it a big part of that is the controller and online network.

DS hasn't aged well it's true, it feels flimsy and does not work well over extended play sessions. This is why most 3rd party ps3 controllers come in the 360 configuration and almost zero 3rd party 360 controllers use the outdated and archaic ps3 layout.

Sephiroushin3884d ago

"Gaming culture.."
Lol Nope, It has nothing to do with gaming culture... PS3 and Xbox 360 should be close from each others if not tied, what ps3 lacks X360 has, and what x360 lacks PS3 has ... Playstation or SNES (which is not even on the list *SMH*) should have taken the second place, its clearly just a biased list ...

sentury1113884d ago

I knew you would get massive down votes for criticizing this sites favorite company, but what you say is very true. At least for me.

PSN is a very poor service and the only way people would pay to use it is with massive amount of free games.

I use my system so rarely for games and never online I am not even sure what my user ID is but I think it's the same as the User ID is for this site.

Great BluRay player poor steaming device due to cinevie muting movies. Some ok games, poor controller that doesn't inspire me to use it for games. Plus I got a massive backload on the 360 and don't want to deal with installing a new HDD on the playstation since I won't use it. I have games that need to be installed to use, but I probably will sell them.

I still want to check out Last of Us because of the reviews and the lets play looked good. Wasn't a huge fan of Uncharted games though. Forza>GT and not a huge fan of God of War. Little Big Planet was fun.

Do you need to install LoU? Thanks

trouble_bubble3884d ago (Edited 3884d ago )

@sentury111
I don't think the disagrees are symptoms of a "site's fave company" so much as a response to inflammatory comments from people who openly don't even play the PS3 or remember their PSN IDs, spouting the "inside track".

For example: "Great BluRay player poor steaming device due to cinevie muting movies."

Dude, Cinavia?! XBOX360 didn't even HAVE A WEB BROWSER to stream your STOLEN MOVIES from until late 2012! lol. But blame Sony, who owns a movie studio, for enabling Cinavia to protect their movie interests. Kinda how MS has keys for their OS and has a history of mass banning consoles for piracy

http://www.ps3news.com/XBox...

-facepalm-

"Do you need to install LoU? "

Why not use your 7-years-later 360 browser and Bing it? You need Gold though, as its locked behind a paywall. Gaming culture :/

sentury1113884d ago

@trouble
You don't have to know the ID to play games. I have a lot of games (about 25) but I just pkay them. The ID isn't a prominent feature on PSN like xbox.

Cinevie works against legally owned movies too. Less DRM is always good IMO. FYI. BTW you don't stream movies through the browser but your PC and that has been there since day one and no gold required. Though you could find movies through a browser I suppose.

IE was on xbox several years ago and I don't use it. Why? My tablet is easier.

Regarding LoU I figured it would be a simple yes or no and the space required if so. I just searched and nothing came up right away after a few tries so maybe that's why I ask. I'll look into more in the future since I'm curious but not atm.

NumOnePS3FanBoy3884d ago

What this guy means by "gaming culture", he means 'Murca culture. But 360 as #2 here HA common no one is that gullible

Not only looking at the HUGE disparity of AAA exclusives between 360 and PS3, also the actual hardware of the first gen 360 and PS3.

Which system launched with full backwards compatibility, wifi, HDMI, bluetooth rechargeable controllers, and slot-loading bluray that doesn't scratch discs?

Which system had an relatively normal 10% failure rate and which had a failure rate estimated anywhere between 25-50%?

Which system introduced a subscription model that actually is well worth its cost?

Which system has a menu that is subtle without appearing like a giant advertisement?

Then again, this is and Edge article, so it all makes sense.

shivvy243884d ago

I dont get why the PS3 and 360 are ranked miles apart when these 2 were pretty much similar consoles with atleast 90% of the games were multiplat !

Deadpoolio3884d ago

It had a 55% failure rate the first 4 years of it's life...They advanced matchmaking but that still isn't enough that it should ever put it above things like PS2, PS1, NES, SNES, Hell even the N64

hennessey863885d ago

The PS2 remains the best console ever made and I would say the 360 is my second favourite.

snipab8t3885d ago

Agreed. I spent more time playing GTA SA on my ps2 then I'd care to admit!

Captain Qwark 93884d ago (Edited 3884d ago )

ps2 is great but my list is more....

1. ps1
2. snes
3. ps2
4. 360
5. n64
6. ps3
7. xbox
8. sega
9. nes
10. dreamcast

mines mostly based off how much i gamed on any given system or which has my fav games. ps1 def holds both of those titles

rainslacker3884d ago

My personal list would be

1. PS2
2. PS1(First console I've ever brought day 1...as a Japanese import no less...Cost me $700)
3. Dreamcast
4. TurboDuo(just because it's my favorite)
5. SNES
6. Genesis
7. PS3(just because it had more exclusive variety and JRPG support)
8. 360(tied with PS3 if you take out the prior reason for PS3 being ahead. The two consoles were pretty equal
9. Vita(it's going up the list, otherwise PSP or GBA)
10. Apple Pippin(Just because I feel like being inflammatory).

Gazondaily3885d ago

Hmm I don't know. I would say for me personally, PS1 first, N64 second and 360 third.

Benjammin253885d ago (Edited 3885d ago )

PS1 first, PS2 second, PS3 or Snes third. Fixed it for ya. 360 wasn't a bad console by any means but I would love to see Edge's explanation of how it's 5 places higher than a console that had a sh-t ton of exclusives and released a GOTY winner nearly every year it was on the market. Metal Gear Solid 4, LittleBIGPlanet, Uncharted 2, Journey, The Last Of Us. While I'd argue that the Snes could also have taken that 3rd spot, the 360 deserves no higher than 5th.

ExCest3884d ago

You're trying to fix his opinion?

Thanks mister!

snipab8t3884d ago

I bet you have never even owned an xbox 360

Why no color tho?

Also $150? No thanks

Tross1790d ago

What decade did I just walk into?

0hMyGandhi1790d ago

I think it looks quirky, absurd and utterly adorable.
But damn. 150 is not cheap for something that looks this...gimmicky.
Though, some huge names behind it, so...We'll see.

I'm Causing The Slow Death Of Gaming Magazines, And It Hurts

by Damien McFerran:
"Last week, we reported on the rather sad news that Future Publishing is closing its GamesMaster and gamesTM magazines, a pair of UK-based monthlies that, between them, have amassed an incredible 40 years of multi-format coverage. The former launched way back in 1993 (Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was reviewed in its first issue, in case you need to give that year a frame of reference) while the latter arrived just under a decade later in 2002. It carried a comparison of the PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube – the key machines of the era."

And it's a shame that online games journalism is so predisposed with social controversy, rather than sticking to the base subject of games, and how fun they are.

I'd prefer if more were like Game Informer and stuck to the basic elements of gaming again. So many sites I don't visit anymore and paper mags have all but died due to low sales.

It really is a travesty.

chris2352001d ago

i can’t say i will be missing physical magazines, but i miss journalism, too. the quality of articles reached an alltime low.

in the past they made their money by learning the chops of the business and selling ads for their magazines. today every legasthenic is able to post a blogpost and all that counts is the clickrevenue. this mentality shows and it‘s offpushing to say the least.
