David Cage: "The one thing I've learned is to never listen to businessmen"

For those of us not in the room, it’s quite hard to imagine how David Cage pitched Heavy Rain to Sony.

He probably started by saying: “Heavy Rain is a story-driven psychological thriller.”

The Sony execs in the room would have been all ears at this point.

“It’s unlike any game on the market.”

A murmur of excitement.

“And it will feature next to no shooting. No guns. And it’s for an audience we’re not entirely sure even exists.”

you NEVER listen to businessmen when it comes to creativity. That's like asking a duck what a shark likes to eat then basing a business on it. The whole corporate model in america is upside down. suits belong in middle management where they belong while those who wear flip flops and shorts are more suited to direct the vision of a company.

this very dynamic alone is why a company like MS makes so many blunders and has no vision for it's products, in fact you could say they are the epitome of a company run by clueless suits.

Aery3896d ago (Edited 3896d ago )

I totally agree.

Creativity don't belong to the suits !!!

The_Devil_Hunter3896d ago

I dont know if guys in flip flops and shorts are the best way to describe the creativity behind gaming... or anything for that matter.

JBSleek3896d ago

If people who wore those flip flops and shorts made the company they would kinda like Google.

Also that shot at MS can be applied to any company really: Sony, Samsung, Dell, Apple, HP, Capcom, etc. Also MS doesn't make too many mistakes really outside of hardware which as we know isn't their strong suit

creatchee3896d ago

@Consoldtobots

Have to disagree. Creative geniuses often have poor to nonexistent business sense (although there are always exceptions). The best model is to let the visionaries bring their dreams to life and the suits to sell those dreams to consumers while keeping profitability at a maximum to fund more future dreams.

Consoldtobots3896d ago (Edited 3896d ago )

thats why i say suits belong in middle management keeping the machine going while the flip flop wearer can just think of cool crap for the company to sell because HE IS the demographic they need to understand.

Consoldtobots3896d ago

its actually a reference to the early culture at MS when they actually had a much more benign outlook toward the industry. This changed once they went corporate and started killing creativity within the company.

Thank God, many people may not like your games but "out of the box" ideas are good for the industry and no matter how much people might hate the games devs always learn from new successful ideas.

Quantic Dream Announces New Publishing Label Spotlight

Quantic Dream has announced a new publishing label, Spotlight, following the reveal of debut title Under the Waves.

sadraiden314d ago

Interesting to see how this works out for them. QD have had a very lucrative partnership with Sony. David Cage is a household name among Playstation owners, and he might not have been if QD stuck with Atari as their publisher. Now they're launching Spotlight so they can circumvent Sony exclusivity? I imagine this isn't the last we'll hear from Spotlight.

Abnor_Mal314d ago (Edited 314d ago )

Weren’t QD bought buy Tencent, and if so then I’m sure there wouldn’t be anymore Sony exclusivity.

Ok it seems to have been NetEase that bought them back in 2022.

mjchitown314d ago

this is not a Sony exclusivity. you can clearly see Xbox One Xbox Series X ps4 ps5

Sonic1881314d ago (Edited 314d ago )

Funny you mention that because in a few Diablo 4 articles, Xbox was the only console that was tagged. It didn't tag playstation or PC and Diablo 4 is a multiplatform game

porkChop314d ago

Bro they had a 3-game contract with Sony. That ended with Detroit. They've haven't been working together since then, so they aren't circumventing anything. They have no obligation to Sony.

CrimsonWing69313d ago

Didn’t they show a Star Wars fake at a Sony event?

I might be wrong about that, but I feel like that’s where I saw if.

porkChop313d ago

I don't think so, Star Wars: Eclipse was announced at the Game Awards.

CrimsonWing69313d ago

@porkchop

The Game Awards, you’re right!

Kekewei313d ago (Edited 313d ago )

I don't think so. There some sources claiming Sony was not happy with their partnership at the end, they even canceled a project that was supposed to be the 4th ps exclusive from QD.

QD is gold! They make excellent games

mastershredder313d ago

Can’t wait for all those quicktime events and bash-you-with-boredom storytelling.

Snookies12313d ago

There's nothing wrong with QTE's. Never understood the hate for them. You press a single button to attack in most games. You press a single button to jump in most games. Why does it then become an issue when you press a button during a cutscene to do something?

JackBNimble313d ago

It's a niche market and not everyone is into that type of game.

RedDevils313d ago

I like their games, it's different from all the trash we seeing every years.

GoodGuy09313d ago

God was Detroit a gem. Hope that their new games are at least on par.

Heavy Rain was my favorite . Fahrenheit was great too

MadLad516d ago

Eh.

Beyond Two Souls and Detroit were alright for the most part.
They're still making games, so something going decent for them.

Supermassive is definitely beating them in this genre though.
