when did this unboxing fetish start?

Skate-AK3901d ago

Since a lot of people went broke and can't afford it themselves.

admiralvic3901d ago

Around the time companies started to get really cheap?

While I don't get why a normal game gets an unboxing, they can be fantastic for collectors editions or game bundles. Like I preordered the Muramasa CE for the "framed" lithograph, but it turned out to be super tiny and framed in only the most literal sense of the term. Another fantastic example would be the Assassins Creed Liberation Vita, since AC:L was just the game in a small plastic holder with a ACL insert. This was a bit disappointing if you were expecting the box art or wanted to resell the game (lot harder to sell the game alone past GameStop / BB).

Oh man I was pretty bummed when the case to the game didn't come with my Vita.

WeAreLegion3901d ago

I bought this. I hope it comes in this week!

ziggurcat3901d ago

uh... isn't it a PSN title? how do you unbox a digital game?

admiralvic3901d ago

There was a short run of physical copies, which included bonus items for a little more.

Also they sometimes do special retail editions of digital games. Terraria Collectors Edition, Ducktales HD, Marvel vs Capcom 2 are some examples of this.

I don't understand "collectors editions" full stop. I just don't understand why people would pay ridiculous amounts more for something only to get silly trinkets, posters or stickers.

I know they sell very well so I must be the odd one out but I just don't get it.

"would pay ridiculous amounts"

$59.99 is ridiculous amounts of money now?

If you're a big fan of the series and really want the game, then a lot of these CE's are only $20 dollars more and offer some neat nicknacks. I am not going to defends them all / debate it, but some of them (like the LBP 2 CE) offer some items that fans love having (Sackboy plush, Drake's ring,

ziggurcat3901d ago (Edited 3901d ago )

to be fair, most collector's editions are $80 - $100.

but i also agree with him - i don't get why people pay money for those things. i only bought one collector's edition (dark souls), and that was only because it was the same price as the regular edition. it was a massive disappointment... the art book that came with the game had half of its pages glued together.

edit: and this game's regular retail price is $40 if i am not mistaken.

1nsomniac3901d ago

I don't mind at all if they're the same price or maybe a fiver extra like the Payday one but its this new fad over the last 5 years of making these collectors edition twice the price of the game because you get it in a steel tin with a few pictures in it & a little plastic figure.

Makes no sense, its almost as if its started to become almost a competition between publishers about who can charge the most & get away with it & again I think it all started with COD.

Ive got literally hundreds of collectors editions from the past with added extras that didn't cost me a single penny more than the regular retail price until this fad started & people started buying into it.

@ 1nsomniac

Payday 2 is an extra 20, not 5 and we're talking a 50% increase from the base price for that.

Anyway, most CE"s are 80 - 100, which isn't terribly good, but isn't terribly bad. I think the craze started because in the past finding a game collectible was fairly uncommon and was part of the awesomeness of Club Nintendo. That concept is sort of gone, but some of the CE items can be pretty awesome. I won't debate some of the things or prices, but even the C4 RC car from Black Ops was pretty awesome (not worth the extra whatever, but that is a fun / neat add on). Every CE is a little different and some (even the crazy ones) are worth it. Prime example would be Skyrim.

Perhaps not worth the FULL $150 dollar price tag, but you got a large figure next to the average CE size. A GIANT artbook that would be on par with the ones you buy for $30 - 40 dollars, the game and some bonus nick nacks.

The Rise of Payday and Its Fall

GB: "Of course, Payday 2 has had its fair share of ups and downs as well, in spite of the success that it has enjoyed. For starters, the disparity between the game’s PC and console versions is a major issue that plagued the game for years on end, thanks to the frustrating optimization issues across platforms brought about by the Diesel Engine, which the game was developed on."
