Full Geo-Mod enabled Saints Row is “literally impossible” in this gen, says Volition

Saints Row 4 senior producer Jim Boone has explained to VG247 why it would be literally impossible to create a fully Geo-Mod enabled edition of the sandbox game – complete with all the destruction of the team’s Red Faction series – on current-gen formats.

I find this quote funny:

>"“My suspicion is that if you looked at another game coming out that didn’t have that technology, that their buildings would look so superior to ours, the gamers would still look at it and say, ‘Wow, what’s wrong with Saints Row, why does it look so horrible? I know the buildings come apart but you know.’"

Other open world games already look FAR superior to Saints Row, and it doesn't even have building destruction. Just look at GTA V (or even the 5-year old GTA IV). The level of detail in the world is light years ahead of any Saints Row game. SR's buildings look like flat, cardboard cutouts in comparison.

>"‘What the hell’s happened to Volition? What the hell’s wrong with that? The city just looks awful compared to what I’m seeing in these other games because of the destruction."

Haha, you can cut out the last 4 words of that quote and that's something I would already say.

aliengmr3902d ago

Wrong. GTA4 in its released form does not look that great.

If Volition had $140 million to spend on SR4, it would probably look as good, since they probably didn't even have a fraction of that...

Funny thing, games actually cost money to develop. If you have a lot of it you can make a shiny game. If you don't...

sdozzo3902d ago

I've been playing Sr3 lately for the first time and I think it looks okay. No complaints. No loading times to really speak of. Maybe it's just been so long since I played gta 4.

AbortMission3902d ago

I also started playing SR3 once it came to PS+. At first I thought the city looked ghetto due to the purple color but then it "grew" on me. I loved free roaming the city at night. Great game to plat

sdozzo3901d ago

Yeah. The purple is all over but eventually you get used to it, etc.

aliengmr3902d ago

Then use Geo-mod elsewhere, in another title. Rather that than trying to make it work in SR.

AbortMission3902d ago (Edited 3902d ago )

Am I the only one disappointed in the fact that the SR4 takes place in Steelport rather than a new city? I kinda don't want to play the game anymore seeing as how I practically know every street from SR3

aliengmr3902d ago

Here's the problem, THQ started going downhill right about the time SR3 released. SR3 wasn't the cause, rather numerous other poor decisions.

They began work on an expansion for SR3 and a good ways into that development THQ passed the financial point of no return on its way to bankruptcy.

It was at this point it was decided to scrap the premise of the expansion and go with a full game.

At this point Volition has neither the time nor money to create the full fledged sequel and new engine everyone expects these days.

What they did, was have a full retail release ready by the time of the auction, which, based on the recent success of SR3, probably increased the value of the IP. Thus keeping it alive.

Honestly, SR4 isn't all I hoped for, but I would be much more disappointed if the franchise was shelved indefinitely.

However, with the announcement of mod support and planned release of an SDK (for PC), the previous disappointment had is gone.

What you and others wanted or even expected of them was just not possible. At least save the impossible expectations for when they actually have the time and money to try and meet them.

AbortMission3902d ago (Edited 3902d ago )

Honestly, they should've scrapped the game (SR4) if it was intended to be SR3 DLC and come out with a legit sequel later after releasing "SR4"/SR3 DLC

I wouldn't have much of a problem with this if it wasn't confirmed that this would be the last Saints Row game (IIRC) I'll probably get this game later after a couple of discounts

Saints Row & Red Faction IPs Will Be Kept Alive Despite Volition's Closure

Today publisher Deep Silver took to X (formerly Twitter) to follow up on the announcement of the closure of Saints Row developer Volition.

Terry_B230d ago

Who knows...maybe we see a remastered SR2 after all and a new studio that makes good SR games again. Still..thanks a ton Volition for the excellent Punisher Video game

Christopher230d ago

We will keep making money off of these by giving them to new teams with zero experience with them.

DarXyde229d ago (Edited 229d ago )

Not necessarily a bad thing having zero experience. Insomniac took a crack at Spider-Man and did it very well. Sucker Punch also made Ghost of Tsushima. Heck, some would say Ninja Theory did a great job with DmC.

jambola228d ago

None of those are new teams

DarXyde228d ago

jambola,

Perhaps we're looking at "new teams" differently. I mean handing it off to a different team (one with no experience in these franchises or types of games). I don't mean a newly formed team.

But even then...a new team doesn't mean they're new to game development.

I'd also like your input on where The Initiative stands. They're new in the sense they've yet to produce any games and formed relatively recently, but comprised of industry veterans.

chicken_in_the_corn229d ago

I'd love another Saints Row game but I can't see it happening after the response to the reboot.

Battlestar23229d ago

I enjoyed the Saints Row reboot and i hope we see more titles in the franchise.

cammers1995229d ago

Reboot was trash and killed the developer.

ChiefofLoliPolice229d ago

I'm very happy to know the SR and RF franchises won't die. RF was a revolutionly fps at the time and loved the 4 og SR games.

Kind of sucks, but to be understood. I feel bad for the talent there who fall due to the decisions of the few and not because they aren't good at what they do.Hope those who deserve it land safely with other teams.

darthv72231d ago

...and as a parting hooray, they are letting Sony give their game away on PS+.

Christopher230d ago

They also made them port it to Steam (was Epic only) so Embracer can rake in money from that over the years.

Lionsguard230d ago

I would pay extra to not have it in my library.

dumahim231d ago

Quite the shame. I really enjoyed the Saints Row games prior to Agent of Mayhem.

HankHill231d ago

It was a shell since most of the original developers left years ago. They haven't made a good game in 10 years imo.

It still sucks though. R.I.P.

seaboy1200231d ago

I agree. New people screwed it up, shame to lose this franchise. Well for now at least. I wonder if anybody else will take the series on

DarXyde230d ago

Scary thought when you consider R* is not really R* anymore either.

StrangeDerp229d ago

@DarXyde Let's face reality and accept the facts, because it's irrelevant that Leslie Benzies and Dan Houser left rockstar games, because Leslie Benzies left rockstar games in (2016) and it made no difference to GTA Online updates or GTA Online gameplay and Dan Houser left rockstar games in (2020), and Dan Houser ONLY wrote the GTA Story for GTA Single Player, and Dan Houser wasn't a programmer or gameplay designer lol.

Leslie Benzies (Producer) leaving rockstar games in (2016) and Dan Houser (GTA Single Player Story Writer) leaving rockstar games in (2020) isn't going to affect GTA 6 gameplay or GTA 6 Online Multiplayer, because they aren't programmers and they don't create the gameplay design, the GTA world, GTA Online, etc.

if GTA 6 Single Player Story Mode is worse than GTA 5's, who cares ?, because most people will only be playing GTA 6 Online Multiplayer after they have finished GTA 6 Single Player Story Mode anyway, because GTA Single Player Story Mode / Free Roam can only entertain most people for so long, until it becomes boring and repetitive.

There are still millions of people playing GTA Online to this day, and there is probably a lot more people playing GTA Online than GTA 5 Single Player.

Have you seen the trash games that Leslie Benzies and Dan Houser are working on ?, Leslie Benzies is working on a trash game called "Everywhere", and Dan Houser invested in a blockchain games company called "Revolving Games", Leslie Benzies and Dan Houser have seriously embarrassed themselves lol.

Here's the video trailer for Leslie Benzies boring and uninteresting looking game called "Everywhere", and here's the article link about Dan Houser investing in a blockchain games company called "Revolving Games", this is beyond embarrassing for Leslie Benzies and Dan Houser lol.

It's a shame for people to loose their jobs but these guys did make fun of gamers for pointing out how bad this looked rather than taking criticism on board.

What the hell were these guys thinking

They didn't just ruin their studio they literally tanked a franchise.

Volition's Saints Row 4 PC upgrade was meant to be a make-good, but it broke the game instead

Remember this year's Saints Row(opens in new tab)? Volition would probably prefer that you didn't, which might go some way to explaining why the studio recently decided to upgrade everyone's copy of Saints Row 4(opens in new tab) to its full-fat Re-elected Edition, containing all the game's story and cosmetic DLC and even introducing cross-play between Steam, Epic, and GOG versions of the game.

Unfortunately, that upgrade seems to have backfired, and players now report a myriad of bugs with their new version of SR4. Both the Saints Row Steam forums(opens in new tab) and subreddit(opens in new tab) are filled with players complaining of broken saves, crashes, and mods failing to function. It's also received a few hundred negative Steam reviews(opens in new tab) since the update. If it's succeeded in washing the taste of Saints Row (2022) out of players' mouths, it's only because it tastes even worse.

crazyCoconuts488d ago

I wonder if Volition's getting reorged under Gearbox impacted the quality of their release.

jeromeface487d ago

i can't help but laugh at this comment. Gearbox can't even run themselves.
