Charlie of Xboxer360 writes, "So one of the things I’ve yet to really touch on from E3 is the response to Final Fantasy XV; I’ve seen some pretty interesting arguments from both sides – those that dislike the changes to the franchise and those that like the changes – so I figured I’d throw in my two cents on the matter. Before I begin in full, I’ll just throw out there that I’ve been a long-time fan of the Final Fantasy series having started playing them at around 7 years old; they’ve been a staple brand in my diet of games and one I’ve returned to frequently.
The first big outcry I’ve seen is towards the setting, people saying it doesn’t qualify as kosher Final Fantasy because it’s too dystopian future set. To these people, I am utterly perplexed about the misconceived notions they seem to have of the franchise; while Fantasy might be a touch of a misnomer, the sci-fi setting is very much true to both the brand and a large chunk of the core audience. In fact, technology and its integration with society have always been a big part of the Final Fantasy world – whether they’re using it to deliver some sort of underlying message or whether it’s just a narrative build I couldn’t tell you."

Gary Green said: With my fondness for (most) Final Fantasy games and my side goal of finishing off games in my collection with loose ends, a return to Final Fantasy XV seemed inevitable. It also serves as my third Final Fantasy platinum trophy after VII and VIII, a reasonable substitute since Final Fantasy IX is nigh on impossible to master.
Final Fantasy 15's director has revealed why he left Square Enix back in 2018.
Hajime Tabata famously resigned from Square Enix two years after Final Fantasy 15 shipped in 2016. In a special livestream at the time, Tabata announced his decision to resign from the company, cancelling three of four new story-focused DLC episodes for Final Fantasy 15 in the process.
Man inherited a train wreck and was expected to release this game in under two years after it spent a better part of a decade in development hell. At one point there was even plans to make FFXIII Versus a musical. He did what he could.
Whatever the behind-the-scenes went on over the many years, at the end of the day it was a radical change in direction that I could not go along with. Also why I never bought 16.
I've liked the evolution of the final fantasies. If you don't like the games don't buy/play them...that simple. So long as people keep buying they will keep making. And to the author I agree in some respects final fantasy has always had some futuristic undertones (heck in 4 you rode a lunar whale to the moon) but I am still a big fan of traditional play (final fantasy dimensions was FANtastic IMO) but I rather like the evolution to action RPG. 12 was a shakey combat system but it was a first stab at it and I enjoyed it(the summons in 12 are what bothered me). As far as character design better graphics means more detail, if the artist favors a certain style I couldn't care to be bothered so long as there's good gameplay. I think they know this game is a 4th quarter hail Mary. They need a win here and I am hoping for one. I was bummed with the linearity of 13 and 13-2 just didn't leave me satisfied (kinda wish it was a sequel in the sense of same characters and a direct continuation of story) but a lot of ppl liked it so to each their own. I for one have hope indeed, and hope this is the one that reestablishes them as an RPG giant
I've not had a problem with any of the FF games I've played, from a gameplay standpoint. Or a battle system standpoint. I've had varying amounts of enjoyment from each of them, with some having better characters or music than others, and some having better stories than others.
Frankly, I don't get it.
There's this perception of what an FF SHOULD be; oddly enough, many FFs lack what people say are staples. And there seems to be a limit to how much Square-Enix can change before it's too much, which is weird, because people want new games, but they want them just like the old ones. But I'm 100% certain they'd complain if XV was like VII.
Hell, they keep clamoring for a remake to VII, and don't even realize they would never be satisfied. They would forever be comparing the remake to the original, and complaining about how it doesn't measure up.
Square-Enix- and, more specifically, Final Fantasy- has become a victim of its own success.
All you little babies just need to stfu and let them make the game! I'm tired of hearing all of you cry about how the combat should be like it used to be, complaining on how 15 will have real time combat! Damn idiots, if you didn't notice, FF13 played like the originals and it was fucking horrible! JRPGs are dying genre and it's because they lack innovation and evolution! They may still have decent and at times, memorable stories but their gameplay just doesn't add up. The majority of turn based jrpgs nowadays are bland and boring with only a very few that deliver. Still Jrpgs like FF need to convert their combat to a more real time based combat system or a more complex turn based combat if they want to survive. Nobody wants just press up ,down, and "x" throughout a whole game anymore! (FF13)
BUT FFXIII was more sci-fi than anything other installment.
Isn't FFXV "a fantasy based on a reality"... modern times?
