Retro Gaming: Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete

Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete is a console role-playing game developed by Game Arts and Japan Art Media as a remake of Lunar: The Silver Star. Initially released on the Sega Saturn in 1996, the game has gone through several variations, beginning with enhanced video support in conjunction with the Saturn's MPEG graphics add-on in 1997, and later being ported to Sony's PlayStation in 1998.

Definitely buying this game on PSN eventually for my PSP. Looks really good.

Hicken3910d ago

Strictly speaking, the PSP version is Silver Star Harmony, which is actually a little better than Silver Star Complete.

That's my objective opinion, however my nostalgia still makes me prefer SSC. Even now, there's just something about that game. Easily in my top ten JRPGs.

Harmony was better than Complete, but I still prefer the original Sega CD "Silver Star." Fantastic series (if you can call 2 games a series) I would love a Lunar 3.

Tetsujin3910d ago

I remember the Sega CD version; and played the updated version on PlayStation. Lunar was one of those RPG series that has potential for future releases, however with Working Designs now defunct hopefully someone else picks it up and continue with it.

My god, this was an extremely great JRPG. Loved every bit of it.

10 Sega CD Games that Might Justify Owning One

Even if the Sega franchise strikes you as dabbling in old school gaming, it is well worth a look at the systems. Some of the original Sega CD (or Mega-CD in Europe) games have an astounding amount of appeal that lovers of all things gaming should consider giving a try.

Man I loved Snatcher. Such a great game!

Einhander19711057d ago

Silpheed, Android Assault, Lords of thunder, Solfeace, flying squadron. That's why I own Mega cd.

CrimsonWing691057d ago

Maybe one day Konami won’t be lame and they can release a Sega CD collection with Snatcher.

Neonridr1057d ago

the only problem with owning a Sega CD is the hardware is less than reliable nowadays. I have an Analogue Mega SG which is an updated version of a genesis along with a Mega SD cartridge which allows me to play Sega CD games off of it. I have the entire Genesis / Sega CD library on the cart and it's great. Although many of these games do not hold up well, lol.

To be honest I own the original tech, but i also have a raspberry pi build with all Mega cd games I want. So the old tech doesn't die.

hmmmm I missed playing three of them and I would include what they included in the top 10 so I bet I would like the three I missed.

Why are turn based Golden? Isnt golden suppose to mean oldest>? Turn based came SECOND action rpgs came first. In fact Square release Dragon slayer 1 and 2 before filing for bankruptcy and right before it was final they released the first turn based one final fantasy(1). And was saved. Too bad they returned to action to smooth out earning for investors.

Personally, I believe the golden age for JRPGs would of been between the 4th-6th generation of consoles.

SaiyanFury1782d ago

And these games are some of the strongest reasons why the original PlayStation is my all time favourite system of all time.

indysurfn1781d ago

yeah it is why I switched from being a sega man to a playstation man!

Xenogears...I felt the nostalgia reading from the site:

“Without a doubt, Xenogears has the best story out of any PS1 JRPG. In fact, it may just feature the grandest story in all of gaming. With a fictional history spanning over 10,000 years and a protagonist that keeps being reincarnated through time, trying to wrap your head around the plot is as exacting as it is engaging. Being able to battle in giant mechs known as Gears and on foot with a super-satisfying combo system is great fun and the soundtrack is one of the best scores ever composed in gaming. What could beat this?”

indysurfn1781d ago

wow that is something how does it compare to the trails of cold steel series?

Fist4achin1781d ago

Solid list. Out of personal preference i might shift around a few of the ranked numbers.

An RPG Series That Should Never Be Forgotten: Lunar

Old-school role-playing fans will probably remember this name with a great fondness but unfortunately, nowhere near enough people played it back then.

Lunar series needs a sequel.. 1 & 2 were great

Death3015d ago

One of my favorite from the Saturn/PS1 era. I'm not sure a sequel is needed. If they could capture the look and feel of the first I would love it. I'm not sure todays audience would receive it the same way. Lunar was very linear by design, but told the story very well. Story driven games don't seem to be as successful today which is a shame.

Shinuz3015d ago

Well just look at the indie rpg's on steam, most of them seem to do quite well and to my knowledge they are all pretty much story based.

nyobzoo3015d ago

Sadly it did, it was Dragons Song and it was awful. But I agree that it should receive another game for the current gen.

jashtheflash3015d ago

One of my favorite PS1 rpgs, where are my PSN releases?

SmokingMonkey3015d ago

Loved collecting that suit of armor (must be upgraded to be worth a damn.) and the Cockatrice.

Lunar: The Silver Star- This was my first JRPG that I really fell in love with and still play to this day. The Characters, Story, Music and Cut-scenes were wonderful. I have this on the Sega CD, PS1 and the PSP.

Lunar Eternal Blue- was another great new story in the Lunar universe. I was always hoping for a Directors Cut similar to Lunar Silver Stary Harmony.

I wanted this to be a huge series, like the scale of Final Fantasy, too bad that never happened.
