PS4 & PS Vita Bundle Coming For 'Around $500'

Sony may introduce a hardware bundle containing a PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita when the next-gen console goes on sale later this year, according to a new report.

It's not absurd at all. The Vita is frequently on sale for $199 including a game and memory card. Their cost to manufacture is certainly below $100 so they can sell the bundle at $500 if they are willing to sell the Vita pretty much at cost.

And why wouldn't they? Sales haven't been what they wanted so sell it at cost and get the install base up. They wouldn't want to do that with standalone Vitas but for a bundle that's fine, they are still making money overall.

Such a bundle might very well tempt some people away from the competition so it would be a good move.

It's either absurd or a good way to hook people into buying the proprietary memory.
If this turns out to be true then I would not expect a cut on the memory cards. That would be asking for too much.
This rumour is somewhat plausible because ps plus adoption will be greatly increased come autumn, and the profit margine on those memory cards must be huge, especially since Sony already had the factories in China to make consumer electronics.

Also, this web browser (on vita) is not a great backup to my android phone. I would love an upgrade in the future.

I don't care what anyone says, I love my vita. I have been playing it a lot lately. Just got into the Killzone Mercenary closed beta too and it is AWESOME! I have been hooked on Killzone since I downloaded it. I can't wait for the full game to release next month. It will definitely hold me over until the PS4 launches and I get to play KZ Shadowfall!

Honestly, I agree with you. But I can completely see why Sony would bundle it in with the PS4.

According to Sony, the Vita's attach rate is really good. But in order for more people to buy more games for the Vita, they need more people to OWN a Vita.

So pushing it with the PS4 would not only put more Vita's in the wild, but it would attract developers to create more for the Vita.

Sony could only win by making this a temporary bundle. Guarantee it would be sold out almost instantly.

My understanding is that you will be able to remote play most/all games on the PS4 with the Vita, so the controls must be able to work in some way.
So if the controls do work, why not set it to use as another controller?

It is all games with remote play (Sony is doing that not the developers this time around). The second controller aspect is being given to the developers to decide. So it is possible but unlikely to be implemented in a large quantity.

Yes the Vita does work pretty well as a controller replacement ...... Matter of fact its good enough that if Sony did a fantastic job intergrating into the PS4's design they could drop the main PS4 controller and call it the remote play bundle..... That could make a significant cost savings that could go a long way in helping to reach the $500 point.

..........Even if Sony didn't drop the PS4 controller they at least breaking even or selling the PS4 at a slight loss at $350 in bundle plus $150 for Vita equals .....$500.... It certainly is feasible.

.....Question is....is Sony willing to pull it off. It would definitely be a fatal blow against Microsoft at that price as the Vita is much more useful and a better value than MS's kinect 2.0 at that price level. Even at $550 it is still a great value and worth the price but would not be the fatal bundle in Microsoft's heart. This new console generation has become much more interesting for the gamer than last and the competition this year between console companies is going to be a win win for us gamers.

Microsoft is after the hearts of hardcore gamers and casual gamers. Casual gamers don't play handheld games - Vita or Nintendo DS. I am a hardcore gamer. I'm overly excited for the Witcher 3, Dragon Age Inquisition, FFXV, Watch Dogs, MGS V, Quantum Break, The Order, Ryse (if Crytek alters gameplay), to name a few. A PS4/Vita bundle doesn't excite me. I don't have enough time to play handheld games. I didn't have time for handheld games during college either, so I definitely don't have time for them now.

Anyway, I said all of that to say, a PS4/Vita bundle would be awesome for some people, but I don't think it will effect Microsoft and XBOX One. The people who are going to buy PS4 will buy it regardless wether Vita is bundled with it or not. I'm buying XBOX One first and I'll buy my PS4 in late 2014.

Lastly, Sony would never bundle those products together for $499. Sony is in financial peril. They need all of the money they can get.

Controller: Depends on the game. A lot of games don't need to use all those buttons. There is a lot a touch pad on the Vita which is alright once you get used to it... Takes a while though. I'm a day one Vuta owner and I'm used to using it.

It's not necessarily supposed to be a controller for it to replace a Dualshock, but is for other kinds of control in games with the new touch screen device support in games. They can work around the L2, R2, L3, and R3 with the back track pad and the front touch screen, though not as good. It is nice to have the remote play supported by basically every game for it though.

Vita is made out of high end cell phone parts, and it will be almost 2 years old come November. They are certainly making a profit on every unit sold. So no, there won't be any loss on Sony's side.

Possibly but that could be made up through software. I hear the Vita has a crazy software to console attachment rate. The issue Sony has is getting people to buy the Vita in the first place (I have one by the way). Once the hardware is out the software could make up the loss. It does have a great attach rate but you have to also account for the type of people that already have Vitas. They are going to be the most ardent supporters and as such their attach rates are going to be absurdly high.

Sony should make a 4G PS Vita though. 3G doesn't work very well unless your inside your house. Then you could theoretically play your games where ever you go. As long as your PS4 is connected to the cloud and your 4G vita to the internet stream your PS4 games would be awesome.

I think they should drop the 3G all together. Nearly all phones can tether and who goes outside the house without a phone. Also walking down the high street shows how a lot of place now offer free Wifi. Adding 4G is an unnecessary expense especially when global 4G roll out hasn't exactly happened yet. It would be nice but would be too much to ask of Sony and the consumer (price wise)

The thing I wonder about remote play is the bandwidth. Not concerned with it on the Vita end, just the upload speed that will be required for the ps4 to stream the video. Obviously this is not a problem when the two are on the same network.

The 3G model might not be in production anymore because it hasn't been selling very many units. They could have a backlog of 3G models so at this point to make more 3G models would literally be digging themselves into debt. If it does sell when the PS4 comes out they may start making them again if they aren't at the moment.

Not only do I think this is likely, I don't really see Sony taking that much of a hit with the $500 price as I'm not totally convinced the $350 retail price of ps4 is doing them much harm and the $250 for Vita almost 2 years on is likely a very safe price point at the end of 2013.

If it happens it'll be BIG... The powerful ps4, remote play, ps+ on both devices and Vita's own native software. That looks way better value than a console with a camera for the same money.

Even WITH no internal storage, it's worth its asking price, though the memory cards are a bit highly priced. Its direct competition is cheaper but FAR less capable, relying more on the brand name than anything; and its indirect competitors are more expensive, less portable, lacks the big name games, and are less suited to gaming(no buttons).

As soon as I read this I was thinking the same thing, but the more I think about it....

If Sony were to do this, and that's a big if, it wouldn't be the first time they were to sell a a loss. This leads me to wonder: what would Vita's price have to be to sell at a loss? Minus deals this thing is typically $250. It's also a year and a half old. A year and a half is a long time in terms of mobile devices.

There would be a few benefits to this bundle were it to exist.
1) The hardcore or semi-hardcore gamer was already aware of vita's price and knows it's a good deal. Install base leads to software and accessory purchases. Stronger brand loyalty is also a plus to a company which has products at almost every price point in every section of a store like BestBuy.
2) Premium price match to Microsoft. It's no secret that some segment of the technology buying market will buy things because they are more expensive. The same can be said about pretty much any product.
3) Nintendo competition. Being able to tout the combo as doing the exact same thing that the Wii-U can except almost anywhere is a pretty hard jab at Nintendo. We all know the the Wii-U is not very popular anyway, but if the package looks the same then it could make the Wii-U a harder sell. The harder competition would be against the 3DS. Sony would have more units in gamers' hands than they do now. More developers could come on board and increase the amount of software available. Also, if the Vita gets a similar pricing outside of the bundle, the 3DS *could* drop a few sales to it.
4) Whether it's 1% more or 1 single unit more because of the bundle, Sony gets more ps4 units into consumer hands. How much profit does one owner bring in during a console generation?

I am no analyst, but I would imagine the ones on Sony's payroll have been running the numbers on ideas like this.

They aren;t only selling it as a peripheral they just really need to build the install base with fans that love to buy games. If they can build up the install base there will be more and better games developed for the system fixing the drought thats been occurring. Say the PS4 costs around 375 normally, as Sony is saying they are not selling it as a loss. And the Vita, they are almost certainly going to drop the price to 200 or 175 and I would bet it only costs them 150 to make them, having been out for over a year. So it only costs sony say 525-550 to make this bundle, so if they could take a 25-50 dollar loss with the HUGE benefit of them having places two new consoles in your hands to buy games for. Everyone will buy PS+ to get the free games for both systems putting 50 more dollars in sony's pockets and you buy two or three games for the systems and they've already made their money back. $500 would be an absolutely incredible bundle that would sell like hotcakes.

Anyhow, I still believe VITA's issue is the price of the device, and of the proprietary memory cards. I think once we see a price drop it will be able to compete more stateside, and receive better development support. One things for sure, market share should increase once the PS4 releases. Its not so simple, unless Sony is going to drop price on the vita this year there will not be a bundle anything lower than 599. Sony is a publicly traded company and they are fighting against take-overs and trying to rebuild their profits. Whoever got the rumor of 499 is just spreading FUD. 550 would be slightly more believable but still hard to believe. 599 would make sense but I think Sony would want to keep that 599 number away from the ps4. Vita is currently $250-300+ the ps4 is $399 no way you can lose $100-150 of profits.

It's a great bundle idea but having a hard time seeing Sony pull the trigger on it for around $500. Currently the Wifi model is listed $250.00 on Amazon. Sales of the Vita haven't been so great that they would be at a point to reduce the price without eating cost. Maybe they cut it to $200 but that would be the most.

On top of that my guess is the PS4 is coming in just around break even cost at launch. I don't see them having much if any room for profit in the initial sku.

Financially Sony has been on a good path but creating a bundle that loses them money just doensn't make sense for them at this point imo. A bundle makes sense but not at $500. Maybe $600 but I think that wold be the cheapest.

They get mapped to the touchscreen/touchpad. No, it's not identical, but it's not like it's that huge of a leap.

You can currently buy the Vita in "like new" condition used for around $120 with free shipping. Sony's not getting that $120 dollars so bundling the Vita with the PS4, for $100 more, would be a "win win" for them and the consumer. Imagine how hard of a kick in the nuts that would be to M$ once again! Hmmm, for the same price i could get a next-gen system with a Kinect, or a HD portable PS4? You are talking about the difference of someone selling a Vita after market USED not New vs it being sold NEW for the first time. Sony already made their $250 when it got sold the first time, Sony is not offering the Vita from the factory NEW for anything close to $120 let alone $200. When something is being offered by a retailer as "like new" it means it was already bought once at retail cost...now is being sold used without warranty at a discounted price because you the buyer are taking a chance on buying something from a previous owner.

In retail they are losing 150, actual money lost on the bundle? Probably not a lot.

It won't come with a memory card, or it will be a 4GB one. So those people will go out and buy one, making up for the Vita cost. And Sony has a profit margin set on PS4 to sell it at 400. Their margin is probably around 250 or 300 (350 at most).

Combine the profit margin of both Vita and PS4, and Sony could drop the price a lot further than 150 and still be making money.

Combine that with the fact that this does one simple thing, expands the Vita userbase. More Vita's means more games from third parties and more support elsewhere. Therefor Sony starts profiting even more off Vita, and still has a successful PS4 on the market. Along with allowing a more widespread experience that Xbox One can't offer.

This would be a very logical thing to do for Sony to push the Vita, and make the whole link between it and the PS4 seem more practical. However, this would probably hit Sony hard money wise since selling the Vita for 100 dollars would be selling it for a major loss. If someone with a lot of money in the bank was doing this, they could suck it up. This decision would result in a lot of sales for the PS4 and Vita but not much actual profit made for Sony. And Sony needs as much profit as it can get right now.

Well it's from my point of view stupid to compare the bundle that is rumored with the two platforms which by the way is optional so if you don't want it don't buy it with the X1 at 499$ as of right now the only option they have.

And if you don't like the vita then don't buy the bundle but the difference to me is that the vita will actually offer some great features with the remote play on the PS4, the kinect to me offers nothing of importance and the same can be said of anyone I know.

You have read the comments made by MS? "the xbox one was made with advertisement in mind" to me that means that they are implementing something that can be found in certain malls over the world and that is advertisement directed at one person.

What I mean is that they have so advanced facial recognition software that if you step in to a mall the software takes your face and then scans the internet for any info or photo of you, lets take for example your facebook photo it recognizes your face and takes whatever info it can find and then uses that to give you the type of advertisement that most likely appeals to you.
This software is already out there, it's not something new or something I've made up I've seen it in action.

Now it is my opinion that it is not in any way impossible that MS is going to use some kind of software like this to direct ads at the person or persons using the X1 if not now then in the near future, that means it will take info from your living room to give you the ads that appeals to you. That is something I definitely do not want in my living room. and at the moment as far as I know there are only laws against the government spying on you, there are NO laws against companies trying to sell you products they can spy as much as they want.

If you want to make me a fanboy of either MS or Sony then Hell yeah I'm a Sony fanboy not because the PS4 might or might not be a better console, only because so many times I've been ripped off by MS I'm never going near any MS product ever.
