All I came here to say is that - whether Killzone's preorders are more or less than two completely dissimilar games on a competitor's console - I really hope Killzone does well. It always has been a fun but flawed B-grade series with the potential to be A-grade, and it looks like Guerilla is putting in the extra footwork to make it A-grade (those open-ended maps!). Let's just hope the fans respond in kind.

That is the dumbest excuse to give as to why the game is selling well, There is many other titles to choose from aside from KZ the fact that it is outpacing all others is the fact that PS4 is controlling Pre sales global and KZ is the PS4's killer app right now! I have always been a fan of KZ but honestly not of KZ3 as it is in my opinion the worst in the franchise but Guerilla has come out and said that the franchise has been reworked from the ground up. Let's not also forget that KZ also has a great multi player following as well and this will only improve with the PS4 and more people owning copies of the game.

It's not surprising that KZ is outpacing Forza and Ryse.

Ryse is a new IP that looks good but not incredible, and Forza has a history of selling less than it's N4G fans think it will. If MS had been smart and provided a Halo game for launch, I'm sure the numbers would be much different.

KZ is an established franchise in a popular genre that's known for great visuals and solid multiplayer, if not groundbreaking gameplay.

A comparison of pre-orders for multi plats like BF4, Watch Dogs, and AC4 would be more revealing. Last I saw, BF4 was the top pre-order on both consoles.

Not sure if you knew, but Killzone: Shadowfall is one of the two exclusives that comes in a bundle with the PS4. Pre-ordering the bundle is also pre-ordering the game that it offers, boosting it's sales. Killzone has proven itself to be the game to get more than Knack so of course people will pick KZ over Knack. What other option is there? If Infamous: Second Son had a bundle, the story would probably be different. More like Killzone: Shadowfall and Infamous: Second Son outpacing Forza 5 and Ryse.

Silent its preorders, so nothing is sold yet. Preorders for games are a good indicator but hardly representative of actual sales since many folks never preorder. Also I was told not to listen to analyst last week when he said his data suggest X1 momentum was building and it would be 2-3 times ps4 at launch. I own both past Killzones, I can say that they were great. Killzone 2 being the best. It had pretty graphics, perfect gameplay, great multiplayer, a super intense atmosphere, and personally you can take Killzone more seriously than any Halo game.

I'm pretty sure almost everyone here watched the E3 gameplay but it shows how they moved away from the linear levels. You'll be able to tackle missions in any order you want because of the open maps. Gameplay has really improved but I want to know more about the story. Hopefully they add more emotion and depth to the new characters.

good point because all the people in here bashing KZ titles have not played them, that's almost a guarantee. most are COD newbs or just Halo d-riders.
KZ2 was a very, very good multiplayer game. Always has good visuals, KZ3 was pretty good, a bit of the same stuff, but had some new elements. Overall pretty fun to play online... my only complaint was a smallish skill tree. The controls are different but have a good feel, always a good connection too by the way.
At least if you are gonna come in here and bash a franchise, have some valid statements to go along with it.

KZ Sf is the poster boy for a high quality, high-production value, system selling. next-gen launch title. It defines "AAA exclusive". It's pretty, it looks fun, it looks cool and it looks worth every penny spent on it. Not to mention it already has a fanbase from being a well-received franchise.
It's a showcase title for the PS4 and the games coming later just push the presentation further.

Logically a franchise ceases to exist if it doesn't sell well with examples of poor sales leading to developer demise for devs like Zipper, Bigbig, and a few others under the the Sony 1st party umbrella (its just business). With that said, Killzone Mercenary and Killzone Shadow Fall will be the 5th and 6th iterations of the franchise, there is even a noteworthy novel Killzone Ascendary which has been available since the release of Killzone 3. My point, Killzone titles continue to be developed because millions of gamers simply love the franchise and rightfully so. While it would be great for any exclusive to generate the Halo sales buzz, Killzone doesn't need to sell like Halo to be successful, it already is a successful franchise. Killzone is a superior shooter with an acquired taste, it is what it is. Like KZ2 and KZ3 Shadow Fall will be acquired millions and that's the simple truth.

I don't understand how people can petition to have Spyro put in PS All Stars, and at the same time, don't get excited about a new IP coming out by the same guy who made the original Spyro. We're so flooded by shooters (FPS and 3rdPS) and once a platformer with roots in the N64/ PS1 era gets announced, it gets flagged for being kiddish.

Looking back at the sale of the series and no Killzone title has yet to hit the 5 million mark. I believe KZ2 finally reached the 4 million mark for its lifetime with KZ3 surpassing the 3 million mark with the added digital sales of the multiplayer offering via PSN. But I think you're right assuming Killzone: Shadow Fall has a great shot of reaching 5 million as a launch PS4 title. Not taking anything away from the K:SF of course, but uber popular multiplatform shooters like BF4 and COD: Ghost could make matters a bit interesting for Helghast nation.

Of course there exclusives are selling more as well. More consoles more games sold. If you look into it PS4 preorder games are all more than XB1.

There is no difference between DC PS+ and the retail. Only difference is one is a disk the other isn't. You can easily just test drive DC and than buy the rest from PS+. It was intend to show if exclusives are moving consoles. When you think about it, it's actually pretty impressive. it's almost 2-1 when compared to Forza 5. I think people are missing the point. They trying to downplay the fact that even with Dead Rising and Forza 5 added together it's only 33/100 and Killzone SF (solo) is 30/100.

There is still more to come for Gamescom. Also this is America only (Xbox One's strongest territory). Let see what the numbers look like elsewhere.

Off topic: Free is free no matter if it's a slim down version or not. It can also be upgraded at a later date. Of course this would affect pre-orders. 9 games confirmed at launch to play if you have PS+. Xbox Live Gold is only 1 game Killer Instinct (Jago and Saberwolf)

That logic doesn't apply because Ps4 pre orders outpace Xbox One pre orders 3-1. Every Xbox one purchase would have to be buying Forza 5 to achieve those numbers. Europe loves shooters too but they also love a well known series called Gran turismo. Xbox One is also only launching in 21 countries. I swore it said NPD in the article and Amazon.

i favored Bungie's Halo's for the most part except for Odst. But it think 343 did a good job considering it was their first Halo and they were following Bungie. the The lore got way better with the addition of prometheans. They just need to tweak the multiplayer bring it back to its Halo 3 roots (dual wielding, no sprint, Elites, better maps...etc.) and they will be fine i was happy with Halo 4 and the multiplayer was still fun as hell. I dont see Halo going anywhere next gen.
Edit: Destiny passing Halo is irrelevant they're different games entirely... also multiplat versus exclusive. Cod/ Battlefield will probably pass Halo doesnt mean anything. Halo is still a system seller tho.

I've played Planetside 2 on PC and it's pretty fun. It's kinda simplistic, but it runs well and the gameplay is solid.

Feels like a step down from AAA, which is incredible actually because it's completely free.

Not only that, Killzone is only running at 25-30 fps, so it BETTER look amazing. This is very expected news, PS4 has gained many casual followers and for the PS4 to immediately have an exclusive FPS launch title for generic gamers who favor Call of Duty and Battlefield is a plus on PS4's side but I myself am not very impressed, It just seems like yet another bland First Person Shooter with a generic storyline and basic gameplay don't get me wrong this game is breaking graphical barriers that Crysis doesn't even exceed, Its just a personal opinion from what I'd say is just a matter of not being able to experience first hand, until then we shall see.

I can see why people think it's generic. I thought the same about KZ2 before it came out, but then I bought the games because my group of friends did. The campaign was okay. I beat it once and then never really went back to it. But the multiplayer was really good in my opinion. I liked the way the classes played and the general layout of the maps. But it wasn't a very easy game to just pick up and play. I remember a lot of people complaining when the game came out about the way it played. It was a tough game to get really good at. But, when people put in the time, there was a lot of depth to the game's multiplayer. You won't see that depth from a trailer. I am thinking that is the case with this game.

Maybe. the problem is, it's still Halo and believe it or not there are many who think it is a slightly overrated series, yes, I am one of them. Halo (1) was good but after that they lost me, there was no real atmosphere (especially three), and when you shoot enemies there's no impact, no sense of death, just brightly coloured enemies clonking to the ground. It just feels very...Teletubbie like, that's what it always reminds me of, I can't help it, it just does.
I know that will upset a few but were all allowed an opinion....aren't we..

Wow, fanboys are like roaches. one little tidbit of information, no matter the context, and they scurry all about like the vermin they are.

Anyway, I've pre-ordered both consoles. I fully expect the PS4 to outsell the X1 (mainly because of the price gap and secondly because of the irreparable damage MS did to their brand name with the initial X1 announcements.)
But, this is a silly comparison. Of course one of Sony's flagship FPS games is going to be high on pre-orders. I mean, Forza looks amazing, but it's just a racing Sim. what realistic gamer would expect it to outsell Killzone?

Would anyone like to talk about the pre order numbers for Forza Vs. Driveclub? That's a lot more fair.

Driveclub = 3.0 (Sony should have launched with GT6)

and I'd have to add to that, the other PS4 exclusives are neck and neck with the X1 titles and Sony's Drive club coming in dead last.
Meanwhile Watchdogs, COD Ghosts, Battlefield, and GTAV, are kicking the collective crap out of any of the next gen titles.

Also, it stands to reason that the PS4 launch games will see more pre-order action since there are more PS4 pre-orders than there are for the X1.

Another thing to consider is that a lot of people are not pre-ordering games. I know I haven't. it's not like they'll be out of stock.
On day one, I'll own Dead Rising 3 on X1
and Killzone on PS4

Forza V Driveclub is not a fair comparison as all PS+ subscribers will get a copy of the game included so in theory there could be more people playing Driveclub. It stands to reason, people want to game online with PS4 they need PS+, they get PS+ , they get Driveclub, which in turn means they will not pre order it.
In theory, if Sony sold 500,000 PS4's and 300,000 subscribed to PS+ then Driveclub could be the most played launch game on both consoles.

You're right. I guess that could very well be the case.
I wasn't really counting it because the PS+ version of driveclub is incomplete. More like a demo or prologue version of the game requiring many micro transactions to complete it.

In the end, my point was more that comparing the pre orders of a driving sim to those of a flagship FPS is like apples and oranges.

When it comes to that PS+ version of driveclub: Personally, I'd buy the disc before I bought all the additions it will take to have the complete game and leave me with only a digital copy that in the end will cost me money to complete. plus I like the true ownership of physical media that has resale/material value :)

Nah, I guess it being free on Plus has nothing to do with it.

People would expect GT to outsell Killzone, even though it's "just a racing sim." And, frankly, the way both get slammed and Forza gets praised, you'd think it would be doing better.

Having GT on PS4 would be nice, but there's no need to rush. Drive Club will see nice sales, GT6 will do well on PS3, and in a few years' time, we'll have GT7.

There are always "a lot" of people that don't preorder. So what?

Now, you're right, I didn't consider it because of that, but I guess it could affect the number of pre-sales because people like you fail to consider that you'll be getting a "Free", incomplete game, that's going to cost you money to complete anyway. (likely nearly the cost of the game itself) Then you'll be stuck with a digital copy of a "Free" game that you paid money to complete and has no return value whatsoever.

"So what?" you don't know much about the industry do you? In the end, pre orders are not accurate sales numbers, only a predictive tool. Nothing is solid until the actual sales numbers come out. Pre orders only make up a small percentage of sales. So, when the vast majority of your consumer base is a wild card, there isn't much you can accurately predict.

That said, I'm not predicting some kind of upset there, I fully expect Killzone to do great sales as it will probably be the best launch title on the PS4. I also expect final sales of PS4 games to be higher than those of X1 games because more PS4 consoles will likely sell on launch than X1 consoles.
But, I also have no misconceptions that the article that we're talking about is fairly meaningless and posted only to feed sad fanboys egos.

Nobody fails to understand that it'll be an "incomplete" version.

MY point was that a significant number of people may decide to wait on the Plus version to see if it's something they'll actually LIKE before they buy it; just because that version will be digital doesn't mean that they wouldn't then get the retail version, which they COULD sell back to stores. You didn't consider that, either, I see.

You say comparing racing sims would be better, and you're right, but Drive Club ISN'T a racing sim. And had it been GT instead of Forza, there'd be no excuse for it to not be tracking higher.

People are also well aware of how preorders don't parallel actual sales. But, just like you've said, they're a predictor. And they're, perhaps, most important at a console's launch, as the core gamers are most likely to get consoles at launch, and are more likely to actually BUY these games that have been preordered.

You threw driveclub out there as if it were something to crush my entire comment. When that's not the case. You ignored the majority of what I had to say. Especially everything positive about the PS4 and the sales of Killzone. (as a fanboy would)

Face it, Driveclub on Plus is Like the crappy Killer instinct that MS is pushing for "Free" with the X1. It's not a full game. Just a glorified demo.

Comparing driving/racing games to one another is better than comparing them to FPS games.
They're two completely different genres and overall, we know that a blockbuster AAA FPS is going to sell more than a game like Forza (which is a AAA title, but not as popular a genre)

Of course you'd like to think I haven't, but as a video game retailer who has worked in the industry for 15 years owning, operating, and ordering for a successful video game store, as well as studying the industry for the last 20 plus years and as a 30 year veteran of gaming, I'd have to say,

It was either KZ or Watchdogs but I went with WD because I think it will have more to do and more replay value. Plus its a new idea, where KZ is a sequel. But I will be getting KZ as my second game later on so I won't be missing out.

I think it would be nice if they did a PS4, PSV, KZ Shadowfall and Mercenary all in one bundle for about $550! Thats still cheaper than the Xgone with 1 game.

It always surprises me when people are hard on Killzone 2 and 3.

I absolutely loved them with the exception of the cheapest end of game fight in KZ2 (I was stuck on that for ages on HARD!).

You often hear comments about the story being weak, but for me it was quite exciting and certainly no weaker than HALO for example.

Then there were comments about it being too bland and brown and while that might be true of KZ2 (although I personally thought it looked absolutely incredible) it certainly wasn't the case with KZ3 which had you in arctic conditions one minute and in jungles the next, it really had some amazing variety.

The only thing I will concede is that the controls were a bit of an acquired taste but even then, you soon get used to them.

I honestly think that most people bashing this series have probably never played them and are just showing their partisan colours.

I urge anyone who likes games to give KZ2 and 3 a fair chance as they were really good sci-fi shooters and certainly no less original or interesting that the last couple of HALO games and are a damn sight better than the last 4 or 5 COD games.
