Can Gaming Ruin Your Social Life?

You’ve doubtless heard of the gamer stereotype. Mom’s basement, no friends, glued to a computer… But is there validity in this stereotype? Can gaming really ruin your social life?

I think most of us can guess the answer to this question.

When I get a new game, it's curtains closed, snacks out and controller/keyboard&mouse in hand. I think it also depends on how social you are with people on your friends list, but I do know that if I'm playing something like The Last of Us, I don't want to be disturbed until I'm done with the story.

example: facebook. no one comes over your house to facebook with you. or Twitter with you.
they will however come over and own you in tekken or nba2k.....games + friends + beer + bong + time away from girlfriends =nuff said.

Its really a personality thing,if this was the 80s the same kid sitting in his room all day playing games would have done something like building model ships or something in his room,1890,probably building watches all day...and if like chris rock said,"what happend to the crazy people".

Pretty much what Somebody and shadowmist13 said. A lot of it does depend on personality. I've got a friend who is pretty much the definition of a 'hardcore gamer'. Guy didn't interact much with other people when we were both at school either and was pretty antisocial even before he really got into gaming first with the PS3, and then PC gaming.

Then I've got my friends at uni who, every time I saw them in our hall dining area, were almost always on one iteration of the Call of Duty series but still found plenty of time to hang out, both with myself and others.

Not if you have friends with the same interests as you, then you can chat and play games all the time. Then go out go to the movies, hit up a bar, wander the mall looking for cheap things prevalent to your hobbies the. Go back for a in night of games and drinks.

The article has it all wrong, it's not that people are afraid they will be seen as having some insane hobby. Lets be honest, video games are a viewed as one step up from watching tv, and generally speaking a waste of time.

well... for me i completely said good bye to my social life when i was playing demon's souls. i couldn't even call my regular gaming friends to my place and pass the controller... the game is hard by itself plus i didn't want them to lose all those orbs i've earned by getting killed. even if i did call my friends constant dying would have pretty much ruined the "party".

for some gaming IS the social life - beer+friends+games.

gaming is a great escape from other problems in life ..

if u game too much u probably have problems outside of gaming

it can sure make your isolation a bigger problem prolonging it.. but sure as hell aint the problem in the first place

I tend to play most games with my friends, even single player games.but for some people it most definitely can.
