Can Tomb Raider Overcome Its Troubled Past (and Present)?

Ten years ago, Lara Croft hit her low point with the disastrous Angel of Darkness. A decade later, the series continues to struggle. The USgamer team debates whether or not there's still hope for Lara.

Excalibur3920d ago

I don't know why the newest game is getting so much static, I (and everyone I know that played it) thought it was a fantastic game and would buy the next one without a thought.

Aery3918d ago

I *totally* loved this reboot and mainly because it's a great game with a great Lara.

I cannot wait to play a sequel!

mewhy323918d ago

Thus far the tomb raider games have been awesome. I am a big fan and this game just reinforced that.

Anthotis3918d ago (Edited 3918d ago )

The series had been pretty much driven into the ground, and a reboot was much needed.

It's a clean slate for a much misused character, but a character that can not only appease the femnazis and self loathing beta males(who are obsessed with gender, religion, skin colour etc) but more importantly can create great games and sell them, too.

We NEED Lara "Tomb Raider" Croft more than ever, and now we have her back.

Aery3918d ago

I want to be honest, I never liked Lara as character (both in the games and ... movies).

This "new" Lara is a different story. I like her attitude and how she appear now. She looks a lot less dull (imho)

Donnieboi3918d ago

@Excalibur:
Yeah I think it was great too. The only thing troubling about it's present, is the cost of producing the game vs it's ability to make a profit. Other than that, the actual game itself is very very good.

KillrateOmega3919d ago (Edited 3919d ago )

Dude, after playing Tomb Raider (the most recent one), I would totally be down to drop some money on a sequel. No doubt.

Tomb Raider was one of the best reboots ever.

Knightofelemia3919d ago

I thought the new game was great I played it and finished it. I'd buy DLC and a sequel to the title.

wannabe gamer3918d ago

Ive been playing tomb raider since the original on PS1....and i thought the newest one was awesome!

fsfsxii3918d ago

The reboot sucked, it became more like Uncharted than Tomb Raider

brodychet3918d ago

damn, there's no way we'd want it like Uncharted! GOTY contender 3 times, won once, multiple awards across the board. Debatably the best developer (naughty dog) on the planet.

Yeah, I'd hate for it to resemble Uncharted in the slightest!

Kyosuke_Sanada3918d ago (Edited 3918d ago )

I wouldn't say that it sucked but I would say it failed in delivering the sense of "survival" the game advertised.

To brodychet:

It is true that Uncharted delivered in entertainment value however it shouldn't be used as grounds to create carbon copies. Why should consumers purchase a title that's only difference to other games is it's protagonist? A great narrative helped Tomb Raider stand out from Naughty Dog's flagship title but I would have loved if they added more things to carve it's own identity.

A more realistic game infrastructure could have helped in my opinion, perhaps a more open world juxtaposition with hunting for food and no RPG elements...

fsfsxii3918d ago

IMO it felt more like uncharted.
No more good puzzles, just more shootouts with crap story. I enjoyed the old Tomb Raiders for what they are.

wannabe gamer3917d ago

Survival doesnt have to mean spending half the game hunting for bandaids and berries to eat. there is wildlife/nature survival and then there is OMG im being hunted by crazed lunatics survival. id say the game delivered very well in one of those and id call that a success

The Best Tomb Raider Games Ranked

We've gone on many adventures with Lara Croft. With another reboot in the making, Wealth of Geeks felt it was a good time to go down the nostalgia rabbit hole and remember the best of those tomb-raiding thrills.

I do agree that Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness was the worse one 😂 I remember playing some of it and I took it back. That game was just awful in every way. I bought it used at gamestop and glad they had that 7 day return policy for used games 😂

Pyrofire9551d ago

Would it be worth saying why?

ZeekQuattro51d ago

Simple. He's been hating on the Tomb Raider reboots for years. I can't imagine seeing them at the top of a best TR game list let alone being on the list in general sitting well with him because of it.

-Foxtrot51d ago

Zeek

“Hating”

No no, just pointing out how TR mutated into a generic action adventure game losing the appeal of what it once was when it was more about puzzles and platforming over going Rambo, slaughtering waves of enemies

But hey, continue being a dick and speaking about me like I’m not going to see the comment.

MeatyUrologist51d ago

Foxtrot, I'm curious if you have played the most recent games. Sure the 2013 reboot was hugely focused on combat, but each follow up became less and less about combat to the point where outside of a few large scale story missions I don't even remember combat being a part of shadow of the tomb raider. Shadow was so puzzle focused it actually was a bit much for me and I love the TR puzzles.

I still feel like Rise was the best of the series and I was a huge fan of the originals. To me it struck the perfect balance of exploration, platforming, puzzles, and combat. Not saying your opinion is wrong I'm just curious what you think they should have done different. Games do need to evolve somewhat to stay relevant. Would you prefer small linear jumping platform levels like the original?

RavenWolfx51d ago

I would agree Rise for 1 and the reboot as 2. Shadow is a bit high, though.

Sonic188151d ago (Edited 51d ago )

I think Shadow wasn't even develop by crystal dynamics. I thought it was the worse in the new trilogy

Pyrofire9551d ago

That's right. Shadow was developed by Eidos Montreal who who went and made Marvels Guardians of the Galaxy next. (Great game)
Meanwhile after Rise of the Tomb Raider, Crystal Dynamics made Marvels Avengers. (bad game)

MeatyUrologist51d ago

Agrees. First two are correct but Shadow should be around 5-6.

terstomp51d ago

For me, Legend should be alot higher (along with the other two ). Shadow, I enjoyed it, but has too much has fluff, as modern games tend to do. Playing the remastered series, and apart from the controls, is very good.

jznrpg51d ago

I really enjoyed the first 2 games, Legend and the first of the reboots and the rest I didn’t get into so I never finished.

robtion51d ago

Completely subjective list. I really liked Underworld, I preferred Lara's design. That said I loved the horror/uncharted feel of the reboot. I think all the TR games have strengths and weaknesses. None are objectively better in every way.
