Next-Gen Outlook: Why I'm Leaning Toward Xbox One Over PS4

GR: There's a fierce battle that's going to take place in just a few months' time. A showdown that gamers have been eagerly anticipating for years. Both Sony and Microsoft will be releasing their next-generation consoles this fall, and with the competition growing more intense each passing day, the showdown between Xbox One and PlayStation 4 will be one for the history books.

Right now, Sony clearly has the upper hand. With a solid reveal, appealing price point, and a whole lot of love from indie developers, gamers are flocking to PlayStation's side. Meanwhile, Microsoft totally botched the Xbox One announcement with poor messaging, a higher price point, and a DRM flip flop that has everyone questioning the company's overall vision. As such, I can totally understand why Sony's camp is a bit larger than Microsoft's at the moment—but oddly enough, I'm still far more interested in the Xbox One.

Now before you bite my head off, just here me out.

its fine for people to prefer inferior things but when the main purpose of a device is better elsewhere and is cheaper then its borderline insanity to choose a lesser product and pay more for it when youre knowledgeable about the history of the products.

a lot of xbox gamers said they dont care about exclusive titles but then is touting how they are choosing xbox one because it has more exclusives over ps4 even though it isnt true.

the ps4 is the best gaming system coming out this year and will be the best gaming platform for its generation judging by the history of playstation and bolstered by the amazing support of the ps3 . xbox 360 support is basically over but ps3 still has a lot of first party support in the works. ps4 is already said to have more exclusive titles being made for it than the xbox one and i can almost guarantee that ps4 will have a lot more exclusive titles than all gaming platform in its generation.

Feel free to list the PS4's , lol. What do they have? I'm getting a since of deja-vu though because just like 2006 when there wasn't anything worth playing on the PS3 and other gamers besides Sony fans were telling them that, they all got upset and were in denial. Check back in about 8 years and see if they bring up 2013, claiming they were getting picked on.

Labeling someone butthurt when they have a different opinion makes you seem like the insecure one, not to mention immature.

You're right about one thing, many gamers buy a console based on exclusives, but who has the best ones is only an opinion. I'll be buying a PS4 because to me Sony has been the clear leader in exclusive content for three generations in a row. For my money, MS has better exclusives than Nintendo but that's not saying much.

Microsoft has 3 major games at launch out of which two are made by third party studios, where as Sony has 3 games made in house by first party studios. Quite frankly it shows the diversity and strength of Playstation as a gaming giant.

Next, "Crimson Dragon" is hardly a system seller, neither is quantum break, D4, Sunset Overdrive, or Project Spark (also on PC).

Here, if you want to include 'those' games, I will too.

PS4 has Planetside 2, Blacklight Retribution, DCUO, Warframe, War Thunder, and Primal Force coming, those are Just ports of PC.

I prefer my games.... Do not care what system its on... A ferrari is a much superior car to a Honda civic, but on city streets its just like any car. Sure some games will look better on PS4, but thats no guarantee it will be a superior game. You know it all anal huggers go on about specs so much, yet some of the best games have been cheap 8 bit looking games. I love the Halo serious, and enjoyed Killzone, but every time it came out, it was the Halo killer.... Has not happened yet, but I do not care, I got hours of entertainment from them. Now either enjoy the games, or search for some specs..... The ladies will love hearing your stories.....

If you're a Halo fan, you should be very skeptical about paying $560 for a Halo game. Do you really trust 343 with Halo enough to make such a big investment? After all, this is the company that gave us:

1) A super linear, as opposed to open level Halo Campaign.
2) A campaign that lasted 5 hours on normal 2 player co-op.
3) A Single QTE Final Boss fight with an enemy hyped up to be this great ancient evil.
4) An awful Spartan Ops Mode filled with areas recycled from the campaign, no challenge (since you instantly respawn when you die there's no need to play tactically), and no replay value (no scoring or skulls).
5) Ordinance/Killstreaks that broke the multiplayer.
6) An insta-kill pistol that you're able to spawn with.
7) Another pistol that makes vehicle usage obsolete when combined with sticky grenades (WHICH YOU ALSO SPAWN WITH NOW)
8) A 3 month wait for a file browser and popular playlists like Doubles and Grifball
9) The addition of CoD perks that also broke the gameplay.
10) The removal of basic game modes like 1 Flag, Assault, Territories, and Juggernaut, as well as great additions to Reach like Invasion.
11) Fewer Custom Games options than Halo 3

I'll stop there, I think you get the point. With 343 in charge, they have a lot to prove before their Halo can be considered something to spend over $500 on.

I understand that you have a staunch view of console gaming and see the PS4 as the only choice for enlightened gamers, however I must point out that just like you and the author of this piece, 'opinions are like arse holes... everybody has one'.

My opinion on this topic is simple. Both consoles have strengths and weaknesses.

If you ask the question what does one console have that the other doesn't, it looks a little like this..

Touchpad on DS4
Gaikai Game Streaming
Free games with PSN+
Play as you download

Microsoft:

Kinect 2.0 (100% uptake)
Computations in the cloud for online gaming
Server hosted online games (instead of p2p hosted)

HDMI In (TV)

As you can see they both have some different but equally similar features.

We all know that PS3 had an advantage over 360 in terms of specs this gen but it didn't stop people buying either console in equal measure.

So this coming gen, I personally don't see any reason why this behaviour will not perpetuate.

So really it comes down to what games you want to play and what features you want in your living room.

So from one arse hole to all the others out there, it's up to you.

Microsoft is coming out with all of these exclusives for the Xbox One, but I feel like they're doing so at the expense of the Xbox 360. First party support for the 360 has really waned these past couple of years, so it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what happened. When the first batch of Xbox One exclusives is released, will they go back to releasing very few per year? And how many will be Kinect games that I have to interest in playing?

Meanwhile Sony is still showing great support to the PS3 even though PS4 is on the horizon, and no doubt the PS4 will have the same excellent volume of first party support. If Microsoft releases first party games more often that Sony does this upcoming gen, I'll be very surprised.

I have to agree, I'm more on the Xbox side of town. Like I said before, MS is already trying to win 3rd party favoritism. They're launching with a 3rd party exclusive for crying out loud. MS still has activision love for COD DLC, and much more. Right now MS has been showing a lot of new innovating features on their momentous service. Unlike the other company I dearly love as well, I can't say the same for them.

Me, personally I'm getting both, but the one is more appealing since I have to pay for both networks now. We already know the powerhouse XBL is compared to PSN so it's really hard for me to just give sony my cash without knowing anything new. Right now xbox seems like the best way to go at the moment.

Like Dark Witness stated, most of those 360 exclusives were later released on the PS3. Additionally, who cares about waiting a month for a few DLC map packs?

You've got to think though. How long are these Xbox One games going to be exclusive? How long is Microsoft's moneyhatting going to last? It was three years before Microsoft stopped buying exclusives, and other than Gears and the few Microsoft releases each year, that's when the support stopped. Starting 2009, Sony started dominating when it came to exclusives because Microsoft just stopped supporting the console.

Why do people always say thing like that. MS don't need to pay people to buy there console over the ps4 or Wiiu and the same for the other two.

For me this year is all about the Wiiu and Xbox one as they have more games I want that the ps4 dose. That's the reason im getting a one before a ps4 but other people will feel different Than me. At the end of the day im glad we have Microsoft, Nintendo and sony making our consoles as it gives us a choice and also keeps each one of them trying to out do the other.

But, you'll be buying two extra games on an inferior system. PS4 is PS3 with better graphics while X1 is a game changer. I play on both PS3 and 360 and know that MS tops Sony big time with Xbox live and the controller alone and it looks like that gap is widening next gen with the cloud and dedicated kinect 2. Also, Sony exclusive shooters like killzone are B games compared to Xbox exclusives. So my advice: spend the extra $100, go with the innovative system with the best online sevice, the best controller, and the best multiplayer games first so you will have the best experience in multiplayer gaming available and then play the great Sony single player exclusives later for cheap. You can have your cake and eat if you play your cards right... or perhaps you're not into multiplayer... then PS4 is probably the way go as long as the PS2~3 gameplay is not wearing thin.

The thing is, I'm buying PS4 first (BF4/PS4/PS+/Launch/PreOrder), and I hate Microsoft's new direction. But...

I really do like Gears of War, Halo, Forza, Crackdown, Fable, Shadowrun, State of Decay...

That's so annoying. I've only had a PS3 this gen, but of course friends have 360's. I never cared for Gears, Halo, Crackdown, Shadowrun, but Forza and State of Decay had me jealous.

Being on the Sony side of things its nice that some games come to PC so you have another way to play it without keeping up another subscription, like Alan Wake, Titanfall, Fable, and State of Decay on PC.

I'm a Halo fan. Skipped Halo 4 though as I just wasn't compelled to go and buy it and try it out. For all I know it could have been the best one, the maps just looked like crap again.

Halo hasn't had good maps since Halo 2 and maybe 2-3 in Halo 3.

Not to be bias but I really enjoyed playing halo 4. I played it mainky for the campaign as Im mostly an offline gamer or singlae player. Right now im playing the last of us and its kick butt as well so I would say as a gamer to try and play both if you can even if its a rental.

How exacty is the xb1 supposed to reduce the number of boxes under the tv. It can not replace a cable box. You will need the same number of cables. The only thing its saving you from is hitting the input button. Plus i actually like my cable boxes interface and dont see how a universal box can make it any better. Everyone that keeps saying exclusives for XB1, it's seems so hollow considering the track record of exclusives we've had for the XBox for the past couple of years. For me, I'm taking the wait and see approach because I really don't see it happening. Here's where things differ a bit with me. In sheer number, PS absolutely outdoes MS for core games. Many think that the better stories are told on Sony exclusives, which I will also acquiesce. In fact, in terms of solo play, Sony has MS beat.

For many of us, though, the combination of Xbox Live party chat and the massive replayability and online-centric style of many MS exclusives are our bread and butter. Halo, Gears and Forza have given us hundreds or thousands of hours of enjoyment. You may enjoy a lot of variety to your gaming, whereas it is a social event for me, as much as meeting my friends at a club or bar. Many of my friends live in different states, so this type of gaming is our favorite. Even when we don't play the same game, we can do our own thing and joke around. It's good that PS4 will have this feature, so that who have down-talked it can really use and enjoy it, and understand what us Xbots have been saying for years.

All my friends were on 360 and all of us are getting an Xbox One to continue this community, and that's why we may eventually get a PS4, as a complementary system, but it won't replace our Xboxes.

Edit: by the disagrees, I can see that many of you actually think MS has better stories, as well. That's cool, too.

If you're not into Uncharted, inFamous, Killzone, or God of War then there's not much more Sony could do for you, but they will. U4 is not guaranteed to be in development, Sony Santa Monica May have a new IP too. Geurilla have a new IP also. There's 12 new IP's from First Party Studios releasing in the First Year alone.

X1 just seems to do more. Its like a smart phone and a flip phone. Both can receive calls as the primary reason to buy a phone. But the smart phone does so much more when you are not talking on it.

M$ just needs strong demonstrations, proper explaining of the features and hands on demos.

I'll not bite your head off author, because it was reasonable. Here's my response though:

When it comes to games, sometimes all it takes is that one franchise that is special to you to sway your choice of consoles. I get that, and while I had mixed feelings about Halo 4 I'll not call you out for wanting more Master Chief. However, judging by history I think Sony is the company to back long term for the best gaming experiences. Early in this generation there was a big difference in the quality of multiplayer and a fair difference in multiplatform games; but the multiplayer will likely be pretty similar between the Xbox One and PS4 while every logical indicator is that the PS4 will have the better multiplatform games.

As far as the all-in-one entertainment device goes, I'm really not sold. I understand the convenience of a device that does many things, and the Xbox One surely will deliver to some degree. However, the Xbox One will need to be plugged into a cable box just like a PS4. In fact, if we go under the assumption that what would be in a normal entertainment room setup is = TV, Video Game Console, Cable Box/DVR if separate, Blue-ray/DVD Player and a Receiver for a surround system, then unless I'm missing something both eliminate only one device, the Blu-ray/DVD player. Now, I'm willing to concede that the Xbox One will likely, in some fashion, be a little more successful of an entertainment device be it due to apps or simply the voice/Kinect navigation. However, barring Microsoft managing to start an entertainment division and provide high quality exclusive content then the differences between what the Xbox One will offer and what the PS4 will offer seems to boil down to talking to your TV.

Then we get to the nitty gritty. For one the PS4 is $100 cheaper, more powerful and, like I said, a more trustworthy pick for games long term. Also, if you are considering buying Day 1 or very early let us not forget the RROD fiasco. One would think Microsoft wouldn't make that mistake again, but should you take the risk instead of making sure?

Last, but not least, is Microsoft itself. Though the company is not the evil blight on the gaming industry many make it out to be, it's hard to argue they had gamers in mind with their restrictive, anti-consumer policies with the Xbox One. Because PS4 was dominating so much in buzz and pre-orders Microsoft was forced to change many of the negative issues. While I certainly don't think a year after launch Microsoft is going to flip a switch and laugh as DRM is forced onto millions of gamers who unwittingly signed the EULA, I already see evidence that they want to acclimate gamers to the policies in a very subversive manner. For instance, requiring people to download a Day 1 "DLC" for Forza 5 "OR IT WILL NOT WORK." Surprisingly some people somehow seem to think it's free DLC. To me, the fact that it's required makes me think it was apart of the game all along and it's a more user-friendly way to impose DRM - even if only one time.

All that being said, I do understand if somebody wants to buy an Xbox One for various reasons (many of which I didn't list). However, at the same time, I also hope that one could acknowledge that while doing so is by NO MEANS wrong it is a risk. Sony is not perfect either, but they seem (to me) to be the safer pick while also having a brighter future.

I find it odd that when people discuss their points for getting the One over the PS4, they bring up the controller.

It's been improved, all you hear is praise about the new PS4 controller, so why not give it a chance?

Also, why are we talking about current gen franchises as selling points?
It's a new generation, which most likely means new IP's, surely that's an interesting prospect too.

Im looking forward to both but the x1 is going to be my first purchase. seeing as the ps4 will be a hundred dollars less more parents will buy it for their little snot nosed kids who want to play call of duty all day. This means the people who arent going to cry about a measly hundred bucks can enjoy a system that will hopefully have less children to deal with.

Im looking forward to the kinect 2.0 . Now that it comes stock and must be on third party developers can actually do more with it besides vocal commands and whatnot. If they know everyone has one they can implement it in creative and useful ways. Being able to open up and pick apart your gun in grfs was a ton of fun.

It would be nice if the console and pc crowd could just get along but alas these wars have been going on seen sega/nintendo days. Maybe if we are lucky by next gen one will just absorb the other and we can go back to a 2 console society.

As for this article. Well, if you love Halo, then I guess you should get an X1. Though I don't know how that's enough to get an X1. And I'm sorry, but after what a microsoft did and the way the acted, I will not be getting an X1. But not only for that reason, but also because there are so many things Microsoft has done wrong in my eyes. From abandoning 360 exclusives years ago, to abandoning the original Xbox not long after 360 launched, to the completely unacceptable RROD failure rate. I could go on, but that's enough. Sony's not perfect, but they're miles better than Microsoft and have a better track record. Especially when it comes to supporting their consoles with exclusives. And that's what I care about... Games.

Although releasing consoles with an RROD was a bad call on MS, they did handle it pretty well, from giving refunds and replacing consoles to adding a 3 year warranty. It wasn't like they said, "Oh, you got an RROD? tough shit, blow me..." They took responsibility for their mistake, and now the RROD is virtually non-existent.

Besides, PS3 has it's own version of the RROD, called the YLOD ("yellow line of doom" or "yellow light of death") and it's prime cause is, you guessed it, overheating the solder on the GPU.

You PS fans are holding on to the "superior hardware" argument, like a starving child holding onto a warm meal...

PS3 touted superior hardware over Xbox 360 - how did that work out for them?... You know what it shows when a group keeps using the same go to response? It shows they have no other argument, and because of that, they will likely try to over-inflate the importance of their claim, to make it seem like a much bigger deal than it actually is. In this case, the argument isn't nearly as crucial as some of you believe it is do to system parity.

PS4 exclusives may look phenomenal, but all multiplat games, will pretty much be neck and neck - any visual improvements, if any, the PS4 shows, will likely be nothing to gloat about. In addition, graphics can only be so good, meaning even high end gaming PC's are only able to produce so much graphics fidelity. It isn't like there's an infinite cap on how good the visuals can get, and to truly push the limits of how good a game looks, and have it at the absolute best it can get, you would likely need to edit game files to achieve it, like on PC.

Both of the next-gen consoles are going to hit or come close to the cap in many of their games, at least by console standards. The extra horsepower in the PS4 doesn't grant like "bonus graphics." It's not like a game comes out and X1 and PS4 are both able to play it on max settings, but PS4 somehow gets max settings +1... and framerate isn't really a concern either, since each console is going to have playable framerates - at least 30fps. After the consoles release, we'll see how many, if any, games release with only 30fps on X1 and 60fps on PS4 - my guess is slim to none.

Another important factor is how well the developers on each system can optimize their games. I have heard arguments on both sides in terms of which console is easier to develop for, so until they launch and developers really get a chance to understand them fully and push them to their limits, it's all just a dick waiving contest now.

Finally, people aren't paying an extra $100 for inferior hardware - they are paying the extra $$ because xbox is shipping with a peripheral, the kinect. It isn't a case of paying the same for less. If Sony decided to include the PS eye like they were going to, you'd be paying more to, and it wouldn't be for PS4's superior hardware...

The superior hardware argument worked out quite well for Sony. Currently the PS3 has outsold the 360 world wide by over 300,000 units and at a higher price point and with the 360 having over a year head start!! This shows consumers trust the PS3 with their money more than they do the 360. They have voted with their wallets worldwide. They are outselling the 360 at about 100,000 every 6 weeks right now.

The PS3 has had some of the best exclusives this gen, as voted by the gaming press as game of the year. Journey and Uncharted 2 come to mind and this year may be The Last of Us.

I don't believe Microsoft are even ready to launch their new console this year. Sony pushed their hand b being ready this year. They can't even get dev kits out to all the devs. If Microsoft do release this year, it will be with a sub standard toolset. Best if they wait until its ready.

Key words are "currently" and "right now." PS3 wasn't always outselling 360 - in fact, for a majority of the cycle, xbox was in the lead, and I'm not even counting the head start.

Second, the lead in sales likely has little to do with the "superior hardware" argument. The fact the PS3 has more powerful hardware and it has passed 360 in sales, are largely coincidental, since the majoirty of the playerbase is more concerned with games, services and even brand loyalty, over system specs.

Third, this doesn't really prove that consumers trust PS3 over xbox - perhaps in some instances it does, but there is likely numerous explanations for consumers choosing PS3 over xbox, not to mention factors such as xbox being practically non-existant in the Japan market, where PS3 is abundant.

As for MS not being ready to release their new console - I won't ague with that. Things do seem rushed on their part, but if this is the case and they release a rushed product, the importance would then fall on how they handle it - is it a disaster followed by months of updates and patches, or perhaps delayed or inadequately developed games, or do they manage to deal with it in a very quick, professional, and non-intrusive way?

If the console is rushed, but the overall quality or experience that players have with it is minimally or unaffected, then what's the point to even mention it, other than to start needless debate? Only time will tell.

@H0RSE : I suppose it depended on how you see each generation. As a sprint or a long distance race? If it was a sprint, then the 360 won it. But, as the console generation lasts 10-12 years, then Sony played their cards to win this gen. I'm not saying Sony couldn't have done better at the start, due to their incredible arrogance, but they did correct course and it would seem they did the right things to now lead the closing years of this gen. Can you honestly see Microsoft correcting course? For the Xbox 1 gamers, I certainly hope so.

The thing I've always felt about Sony is that they really do understand games and gamers. They have invested in games that no other company would even look at. Publishing Demon's Souls is one example, which led to the success of Dark Souls going multi-plat, using an OpenSource Sony game engine called PhyreEngine! Can you see Microsoft offering a game engine they worked on and then allowing game devs to target other platforms with it? I certainly can't.

Sony do it because they realise that the more games that game developers make, the more gamers are attracted to all platforms and everyone in the console generation wins. They also understand that games can be art, which Microsoft have never, ever understood. Will Microsoft ever see games as more than just a way to get their "TV" box into the living room? Time will tell.

Reasons why, even as a PS3 owner, I may get an XboxOne (and only get a PS4 later):

1) Although the Sony presentations were refreshing, grounded, even fun in terms of their spirit, when the internet suddenly became overwhelmingly pro-PS4 the real reasons revealed something uglier. Self appointed pseudo-intellectuals pretending that nothing of any artistic note has ever been done on Xbox consoles.

2) Family sharing plan is a great idea- and it may return. Considering that I nearly always buy my games brand new, their original policies were fine by me to pay for them to be able to afford the family sharing plan.
If people were going to attack Microsoft it should have been for never offering a free level of online service.

3) The announced Xbox One exclusives so far have a slight edge over the PS4 in my opinion. Although The Order - and particularly Deep Down - do look good.
But I like colourful fun and Sunset Overdrive appeals to me. Even Dead Rising 3, not typically a genre I care for,
appeals to me for numbers of enemies on screen.

But- the share button on the PS4 is very nice.

Not being of the camp that says that to be artistic you must necessarily be human story focussed or appeal to the bourgeoisie sentiment of what is meaningful(something that the likes of Marcel Duchamp, and later Pop Art, debunked a long time ago), my choices for artistry in Microsoft games would not be the easy sell to gamers that Sony's deserved success with the likes of the Bafta-award winning The Unfinished Swan, Heavy Rain and Naughty Dog's would be.

But if I may say Alan Wake. Now with this you must remember that, being a Remedy game, it is not adverse to a bit of deliberately tongue in cheekness. The game should not be seen as being meant to be just an uber-terrifying game but as an exploratory adventure for a discerning audience familiar with pop culture references, with survival elements revealing the kind of story that other developers might have handled in either a less nuanced, or alternatively a too serious, way. But also, from a design viewpoint, it looks fairly pretty and atmospheric for a game so long in production.

Now I could throw in Super Meat Boy as well but there are other indie games on both consoles anyway like Limbo.

But my other choice - and it may seem surprising - is Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts. No matter what you think of the game itself, Rare can make big giant adventure playgrounds of levels. And that is part of what gaming is about.

@Picnic I think our definitions of artistic are different. I would put Unfinished Swan, Journey in that category and Heavy Rain and Uncharted/Last of Us as good games that are told very well and have a good amount of attention to detail and polish. I have not played Alan Wake, but have heard that is has great pacing and is quite engaging, so I wouldn't put it under artistic, but from what I've heard would say it is a good game.

It's a proven fact that for the money, the PS4 is a better investment so why all the arguing? It's pointless to debate X1 vs PS4 except only if there's a must have game or series of games exclusive to one console or the other. Other than that, the PS4 has superior specs, (much) lower starting price, more features and a larger library of Day One games to choose from than the Xbox One. I bought Xbox at launch ps3 at launch. I played Xbox most at first , but as time went on I foundy Xbox sitting there while I was always playing ps3 . I would turn on my Xbox just to play with my son , who loves fps , but he also ended up putting his Xbox unless a friend wants to play halo ominecraft . I had no bias , we just follwed the games thmes we wanted to play. This time around I am getting ps4 at launch , and may get xbone if there are enough games that catch my eye. I don't care for the Kinect though, my son only uses it for just dance but is trading it in now that he's getting older. I do prefer ps4 this round but as last gem I will follow the games , if Xbox supports the system all of its life I'm sure ill get one , but, looking back , it seems they did not do that for 360. Sony didn't have a lot at launch , but as time went on the titles were better and numerous imo. Btw my grammar sucks and don't care to correct it on my phone.
