Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot Thinks PS4/Xbox One Gen Should Last 5 Years

It’s been a long wait for new consoles since the Xbox 360 kicked off this gen in 2005, but the PS4 and Xbox One are finally out this holiday. - PSLS

Right. Because that'll happen, even though this gen should have taught Microsoft and Sony not to rely so heavily on the 10-year plan.

Sitdown3933d ago

Why so? Given that the systems continue to sell, and at a greater profit margin.

CGI-Quality3933d ago

Sony has always had a 10+ year plan for their consoles. So far, it has yet to fail them. Besides, 10 years doesn't mean no successor for the entirety of that time period (again, something that has yet to fail Sony).

OT: I prefer a new gen every 5-6 years, myself. This way, I don't feel burnt out of the previous gen while still being stoked for what's new. The 360 and PS3 have gone too long without successors.

ABizzel13933d ago

Technologically speaking the consoles should last 6 years, before UHD GPU's become the norm and 2k and 4k gaming become standard.

That being said I don't see them in any rush once again (besides Nintendo who knows they'll need to capitalize on any potential head start they may get).

I see Wii U being the only console to last around 5 years. We'll probably get a E3 reveal summer 2018 with a launch later that holiday.

As for PS5 and Xbox? the tech they want will be ready by 2018, but it'll cost too much, so we may get a reveal in late 2019, with a release in 2020 (another 7 year cycle). So 6 full years of gaming before a reveal, and 7 full years before the next-gen.

Contrary to popular belief about the internet, ABizzel1, I am sincerely a female.

I'm not offended, however. I get that a lot. I sometimes debate if I should put up my real picture as an avatar, but dat privacy.

Apologies.

princejb1343933d ago

Why would you want a console released every 5 years?
10 year plan is fine
Not everyone has money to buy a console every 5 years

That's why I'm a console gamer and not a pc gamer

stone_cold3933d ago

He mean Xbox one should last 5 years

but PS4 ...... put another 4

TrendyGamers3933d ago

I'd say we might see a 5.5 year wait, with either Sony or Microsoft choosing to release ahead of the holidays.

iGAM3R-VIII3933d ago

nahh 5.65 seems like the better estimate

CoLD FiRE3933d ago

I'm thinking 6.9 would be great.

Stryfeno23933d ago

What about 5.-1, is that not realistic?

Godmars2903933d ago (Edited 3933d ago )

Given how they were designed you'd expect another 10 year cycle if not longer. Especially given the way MS tried to just dump DRM instead of phasing it in.

Then again given their and Nintendo's mistakes this might be only a 4-5 cycle.

Edit:
And lets just forget that this is someone from Ubisoft saying this.

M-M3933d ago

They will last much longer than 5 years.

InTheZoneAC3933d ago

ps3 came out in 2006, that's 7 years when ps4 is released. I could see 1 more solid year from ps3, which would put it at 8 and that's closer to 10 than the 5 this article suggests next gen will last.

Double_O_Revan3933d ago

Given the recent pile of AAA games, I could see ps3 lasting another year.

No it won't, it will just further highlight the huge disparity in top tier open world games and Ubi's poor attempts at them.

Cool so I'm just going to have to climb towers in a more reactive world thanks ubi that wasn't your problem.

In my view ubi needs to clean house rehire all the writers because their stories are paper thin this focus on needing to be woke play as anyone has done nothing but harm the quality of their games which have gotten so bad lately it somehow makes their average games from 10 years ago look like masterpieces

Psychonaut85173d ago

Why don’t you just focus on making good games again? Hurts me to see what a soulless shell of a company Ubisoft has become. Captain Laserhawk on Netflix is the most creative thing they’ve had anything to do with in a decade. Which is just sad.

That whole statement about the ABK deal I heard as "Hey, we're available for sale for $68B as well! Come buy us! We have good mobile IPs as well!"

Abriael272d ago

Quite possible. Especially considering that he didn't answer the part of the question about his opinion on independence.

-Foxtrot272d ago

With how hard it was for MS to get the ABK deal through I have hard time believing they could take another, their third publisher.

I'm not saying it couldn't but after what they've just went through, imagine getting another one passed.

Abriael272d ago

Microsoft is certainly not the only buyer in the market.

TheColbertinator272d ago

Microsoft will buy every other 3rd party publisher in due time. Prepare yourself/

-Foxtrot272d ago

@TheColbertinator

"If we can't win it...buy it"

blackblades272d ago

Going by how shytty the protection are around mergers/aquiring whatever is. They'll be fine and will be able to aquire easily. The only one giving them trouble is CMA. The FTC basically prolonged it I would say it was easy for MS just annoying i bet.

EvertonFC271d ago (Edited 271d ago )

Yeah I can't see any other big ones being purchased by MS, not for a good while. However Sony can buy a couple of really big ones now without any opposition.
If I was Sony I'd just buy rockstar and take GTA, RDR away from MS and go see we can fu*k you up too.
Edit: don't think that would ever happen btw and if it did it would be more beneficial staying 3rd party profits wise.

MrBaskerville271d ago

ABK was hard because they are the biggest publisher in the industry, if not the biggest company overall. Ubisoft is a lot smaller, so probably not as tough.

Christopher271d ago

***Microsoft is certainly not the only buyer in the market. ***

*Embracer and Tencent have entered the chat*

long-time-gamer271d ago

I mean at this point they might just try and gobble up everybody, one by one and have the Netflix oh gaming even though ps has a nice amount of games to keep you busy,

dcbronco269d ago

I think it will be easier for Microsoft to buy the next one. Given the way the FTC was humiliated by congress and that Khan will be fired because of her resistance the next head of the FTC won't be too anxious to interfere. The next one will be easy. Especially since Sony's exclusivity deals weren't made a big deal of yet. To prevent further acquisitions by Microsoft Sony needs to try to get a deal with Microsoft that stops exclusivity deals in return for no more acquisitions. Sony can't afford a acquisition battle. So they should assure Microsoft they will no longer be locked out of franchises. Otherwise we are going to see some big offers or hostile takeovers.

Whatever happened to Ubi, used to be one of my fav pubs.

jaymacx271d ago

What happened to them is they play it safe and follow industry trends and most of their newer games aren’t fun and are loaded with filler content. Hopefully with the new Prince of Persia and the Star Wars game, they can turn things around and bring excitement back to their releases.

darksky270d ago

If they are desperate to sell then that means they are struggling or know things will go south eventually. No company would try to find buyers if they were growing.

At this point who doesn't want this deal to happen lol.

Stanjara271d ago

So Ubi is next judging by their ass kissing.

crustcate271d ago

I'm not saying it couldn't but after what they've just went through, imagine getting another one passed.

LabRat271d ago

Yeah that's why I think they did it in the order they did. First they buy a few studios ( Ninja theory, compulsion games, double fine, playground games) okay no big deal. Then they get something a little bigger (zenimax/bethesda/ID software etc). That caused a stir but again, okay I guess. Then finally the hammer (activision). That caused a huge commotion and a lot of attention. Had they done this in the reverse order, I doubt Bethesda would've passed. They will likely lay low with acquisitions for a looong time now.

MrBaskerville271d ago

They know that they are next in line, so why wouldn't they congratulate them?
