Xbox Policy Change Could Win Back Indie Devs Lost to Sony

Hardcore Gamer: The policy change might not be big news itself, but if it represents a genuine attitude shift in the way Microsoft treats indie developers, then perhaps Microsoft stands a chance at winning back some of those indie devs they lost to Sony. The restriction on self publication still needs to change, but this was a step in the right direction and an abandonment of bad policy (something Microsoft seems to be doing a lot of these days).

Look at all the exclusive/console exclusive indie titles Sony is bringing to PS4, this is definitely a case of too little too late for MS. Allow self publishing and then we'll talk but until then MS are still far behind Sony in this regard.

SlavisH23937d ago (Edited 3937d ago )

How is it to little to late? Systems haven't even launched and are technically still in developement since final dev kits haven't shipped. Companies have to be dynamic to survive. Companies change all the time or they go away. Sony has been very adaptive from feedback from ps3 to ps4. That is basic capitalism. That is why i had to disagree with your comment.

P.S. Maybe you meant to late for you to consider their product? If so, then why post if you have no interest, imo.

Chaostar3937d ago (Edited 3937d ago )

It's too late to attract the same level of indie support that Sony has for launch. I'm not saying that it's too late full stop, they could turn it around with self-publishing and doubling down on developer relations/support.

Like the article says, it's a step in the right direction but it's not enough or soon enough to make much of a difference in the critical launch window.

n4rc3936d ago (Edited 3936d ago )

Hugely disagree..

Self publishing leads to a market swamped with bs poor quality titles...

And just like I've said about the music industry.. Indies are so for a reason..

Nobody wants to give them a dime.. If quality was there, they wouldn't need to self publish..

Not saying there aren't a few gems.. But I don't was a million crap game to dig through to find it..

Indies are not the major selling point people would like you to believe..

Its just one of the few straws the haters can still grasp at imo

*Deeeeeep Breath*

Flow, Journey, Bastion, Braid, Castle Crashers, Flower, Shank, Dust: AET, Fez, Limbo, World of Goo, Super Meat Boy, Minecraft, Trine, Machinarium, Spelunky, Terraria, Sine Mora, Hotline Miami, Thomas Was Alone, Awesomenauts, Super Hexagon, FTL, Amnesia, Dear Esther, Costume Quest, The Unfinished Swan, Binding of Isaac, VVVVVV, Cave Story...

Your argument is invalid.

n4rc3936d ago

I could care less about any one of those and that probably applies to a good chunk of consumers..

So why would that affect my decision?

Some people swear by Apple and Justin beiber.. Doesn't mean I have to ;)

n4rc3936d ago

Of of the two titles I've actually heard of.. Braid is on xbla..is it not?

Still don't care to play it tho.. Lol

zeroskie3936d ago

@n4rc, problem is that year after year we get a COD, we get an Assassin's Creed and it's a predictable re-hash of old stuff. Indie games may not be as polished, but they offer new ideas and fresh perspective. They also let us discover new developers with original ideas that could go on to make the next great AAA title that you love.

Plus, many people genuinely like indie titles. All those games that Chaostar listed were fantastic and if you didn't play any of them it's your loss.

Chaostar3936d ago

@n4rc

I can see I'm talking to a brick wall. Believing something is unimportant because you're ignorant of it is the height of arrogance.

Hicken3936d ago

n4rc before Chaostar list:

"Indies aren't important. They don't sell. Nobody cares about. Most of them are crap."

n4rc after massive list of important, acclaimed, high-selling indie games:

"I don't know anything about those, so I don't care."

ZeroX98763936d ago

@n4rc
so by your standards, call of duty is the best game ever made in gaming history, since the game had a big budget and the sales were high.

Swiftcricket3936d ago

"Nobody wants to give them a dime.. If quality was there, they wouldn't need to self publish.."

Can't fall back on the "in my opinion" line after that. And tell that to Minecraft's over 20 million sales. You can combine some AAA titles and not touch that number.

"too little too late" Guess much?

PopRocks3593936d ago

The problem is not necessarily that Microsoft made the Xbox One unattractive (which they did, by the way). It's also that the system is largely not indie friendly. No self-publishing and supposedly riddled with the same types of issues indes faced with the Xbox 360.

It's not the console or Microsoft's handling that makes it a headache for indies, it's simply Microsoft's apathy for indie game development that makes them less viable.

isarai3936d ago

exactly, when indie devs speak out about the cons of working with MS, paying for updates is the last of their issues with MS.

redwin3936d ago

The apathy ? You just read that MS did not want self publishing because they didn't want developers to put out half done games and then comeback and with a patch. They are protecting YOU, the consumer, and they don't want to look bad. Do you honestly think it's malice? They started the Indy business before Sony and if it wouldn't be for MS you'll be playing off line and if so, where would all this small companies be? I have and will have both next gen systems, but what you are saying is just not true.

PopRocks3593936d ago

Let me protect myself and choose what indie games to support. I don't need Microsoft looking out for me, especially since they were doing anything BUT that with their always-online and DRM policies initially.

Kickstarter, Wii U and PSN are much more effective ways for indies to get off the ground; just my view.

redwin3936d ago

If you buy an Indy game from Xbox Live and it doesn't work well, who do you call for a refund ? Ans: MA. If the fact was that we calked the developer and we complain to them and hold them accountable then things would be a lot different . It's like if you have a car and the fuel pump keeps braking, you'll blame the car company not the parts manufacturer .

LOVE IT

coolasj3936d ago

I think most of the indie devs are mad about the whole No Self-Publishing thing. And the apparently bad service MS provides when trying to get their games to platforms.

Hicken3936d ago

It could, but it's not likely. Why would they? Xbox improving doesn't mean it's a better situation than Playstation. It just means it's better than it was.

That, in and of itself, is commendable, but it's not an inherent reason to go back to Microsoft.

Review - Fez (Switch) | WayTooManyGames

WTMG's Leo Faria: "In short, Fez is as good now as it has always been. The reason I call this version the best way to experience this indie game is mostly due to the perfect combination of the Switch’s portability and its screen being much larger than the Vita’s. This is easily one of the best indies ever made, and one of the most important games of the past decade. Even though a lot of younger players only know it due to its troubled development cycle and some post-launch controversies, Switch owners should definitely pick this game up. This gem took an eternity to arrive on the system, but it feels right at home on it."
