Top three contenders will be Bioshock Infinite, The Last of Us and GTA V

ShugaCane3946d ago

As far as the narrative is concerned, I think Beyond : Two Souls will deserve a chance as well.

awesomeperson3946d ago

I personally can not wait for Beyond: Two Souls, as from what I've seen thus far it looks amazing. I also really loved Heavy Rain earlier this generation.

However, even if the story may be stellar, I feel as if it wouldn't be given much of a chance at Game of the Year due to hugely differing opinions surrounding the gameplay present within it.

I do hope it gets recognition if it lives up to the usual Quantic Dream level of storytelling.

i think it will come down to TLOU vs. GTAV for GOTY

but i don't care
TLOU is my GOTG
no need for an award to tell my what is my best game

wastedcells3946d ago

I can't see any game beating TLOU for game of the year. GTAV will be great but TLOU is just.... Special. Those who have played it from start to finish know what I'm trying to say.

Relientk773946d ago

Bioshock Infinite and The Last of Us are amazing

thaimasker3946d ago

Don't forget The Walking Dead Season 2

Transporter473946d ago

Idk i like the first Walking Dead season but i don't think it comes that close to TLOU.

admiralvic3946d ago

I know I am going to get a LOT of disagrees for this, but GOTY tends to have more to do with things beyond the scope of good or unique gameplay.

Take The Walking Dead, which won a bunch of GOTY awards last year. The game its self was a point and click, but the story was "so amazing" that it kept winning awards / praise. This really isn't that surprising, since I've seen a number of people act like these elements outweigh gameplay. One of my favorites was a comment on N4G a while back, where someone defended Kojima as a game developer by praising him for making one of the best stories of all time.

It's a shame (as someone who really just cares about gameplay), but I suppose it really just comes down to what people like, over what is and isn't logical.

I really enjoyed how the environments of Metro: Last Light had little sad stories of their own. A flickering helmet light revealing the remains of what was a soldier's last stand, mutant bodies spread around him with knives and bolts sticking out of their bodies. The skeletons of a child being shielded by the parent in a rotting train car. These small set pieces really added to the world of Last Light, and were a reminder of the many dangers it holds.

On top of that were the Journal entries, which expanded on the thoughts of Artyom. Not just on how he viewed the main mission, but on many aspects of life in the Metro.

I do agree that Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness was the worse one 😂 I remember playing some of it and I took it back. That game was just awful in every way. I bought it used at gamestop and glad they had that 7 day return policy for used games 😂

Pyrofire9560d ago

Would it be worth saying why?

ZeekQuattro60d ago

Simple. He's been hating on the Tomb Raider reboots for years. I can't imagine seeing them at the top of a best TR game list let alone being on the list in general sitting well with him because of it.

-Foxtrot60d ago

Zeek

“Hating”

No no, just pointing out how TR mutated into a generic action adventure game losing the appeal of what it once was when it was more about puzzles and platforming over going Rambo, slaughtering waves of enemies

But hey, continue being a dick and speaking about me like I’m not going to see the comment.

MeatyUrologist60d ago

Foxtrot, I'm curious if you have played the most recent games. Sure the 2013 reboot was hugely focused on combat, but each follow up became less and less about combat to the point where outside of a few large scale story missions I don't even remember combat being a part of shadow of the tomb raider. Shadow was so puzzle focused it actually was a bit much for me and I love the TR puzzles.

I still feel like Rise was the best of the series and I was a huge fan of the originals. To me it struck the perfect balance of exploration, platforming, puzzles, and combat. Not saying your opinion is wrong I'm just curious what you think they should have done different. Games do need to evolve somewhat to stay relevant. Would you prefer small linear jumping platform levels like the original?

RavenWolfx60d ago

I would agree Rise for 1 and the reboot as 2. Shadow is a bit high, though.

Sonic188160d ago (Edited 60d ago )

I think Shadow wasn't even develop by crystal dynamics. I thought it was the worse in the new trilogy

Pyrofire9560d ago

That's right. Shadow was developed by Eidos Montreal who who went and made Marvels Guardians of the Galaxy next. (Great game)
Meanwhile after Rise of the Tomb Raider, Crystal Dynamics made Marvels Avengers. (bad game)

MeatyUrologist60d ago

Agrees. First two are correct but Shadow should be around 5-6.

terstomp60d ago

For me, Legend should be alot higher (along with the other two ). Shadow, I enjoyed it, but has too much has fluff, as modern games tend to do. Playing the remastered series, and apart from the controls, is very good.

jznrpg60d ago

I really enjoyed the first 2 games, Legend and the first of the reboots and the rest I didn’t get into so I never finished.

robtion60d ago

Completely subjective list. I really liked Underworld, I preferred Lara's design. That said I loved the horror/uncharted feel of the reboot. I think all the TR games have strengths and weaknesses. None are objectively better in every way.
