E3 2013: Dark Souls II Impressions | GamingExcellence

After my fourth death during the demo of Dark Souls II, I really wanted to snap the controller in half. And yet, I still wanted to play more and more.

That is the alluring siren song that the Soul series sings to its players. When you die, it makes you want to do better. Its challenging gameplay are for a serious sect of roleplaying gamers. This is not a series that holds your hand. You may get a quick tutorial that tells you the buttons, but after that THAT'S IT! You are left on your own to fight and to die. And make no mistake: you will die a lot.

One on the best new IPs this gen IMO. I remember when Demons Souls was not even out and reviewers were going crazy with the Prepare to die a lot thing. Lol I was so nervous when I first got it I was like a scared rabbit in the tutorial. As I worked through the underground I was all "oh this ain't so hard". Then I went into that room with the big fat guy and stood there like an idiot as he clobbered me.

My friend was all "um did you just fight a boss in the TUTORIAL?!?!?!?!?"

Good times.

When I first came up against the Vanguard demon in the tutorial, I rushed him. Big mistake. One axe swing and I died. When I finally beat him, it was GLORIOUS... and then you die in a cutscene anyway. -_-

**EDIT** I actually miss that in Dark Souls. The tutorial boss in Dark Souls didn't have that same fear, nor that same feeling of accomplishment when you beat him. I remember trying to beat the Asylum demon with that broken hilt, doing a pitiful 2 damage a hit, and when I did all I got was that hammer and I was like... ok.

I don't know. Demon's Souls always seemed more rewarding. Like the effort you put into it actually meant something.

On nG+, can you choose to play the tutorial again? It's the only area I didn't get to beat the boss.

Swiggins3942d ago

You cannot, but fortunately you can kill the Vanguard in world 4-1 for the Grey Demons Soul anyway.

I have to disagree with Dragon, I like the Asylum Demon better because he teaches you a lesson...namely that blunt force is not always, and indeed is rarely the answer to combat.

The Vanguard is just kind of there to take a massive dump on you at the start. You don't really learn anything from him other than "This game is going to kick my ass up and down the sidewalk"

DragonKnight3942d ago

@Swiggins: I have to disagree with you. If the Vanguard wasn't there to teach you anything other than "you gon' die" then you couldn't defeat him and would die in a cutscene like you do after you beat him. Only thing Asylum Demon teaches you is to use a better weapon.

The game isn't good though.

DS2 was fine. While there was a bit of recycling assets or ideas for bosses, it was a bigger more open Dark Souls. The Fume knight boss is one of the hardest bosses in the series until Sekiro and Elden Ring were released.

The problem with Dark Souls 2 was the same problem when a different director takes over for a sequel to an outstanding movie. It typically (there are exceptions) doesn’t have the feel and vision of the previous movie.

I wouldn’t say Dark Souls 2 is terrible. Had Dark Souls 1 never been a thing and we got this, I think it would have been praised more. The problem is it didn’t have the Miyazaki touch to it and felt pretty derivative. The soundtrack is a banger though.

And it will happen in the future when he doesn’t touch them as he is planning on.

I like DS 2, might even be my favorite of the 3. But it's a hard sell, there's so many obscure things you need to do to make it an enjoyable experience. So always find it hard to recommend, but it is worth the trouble.

All the bosses are only from Dark Souls. No Bloodborne, Sekiro, Elden Ring, or Demon Souls
