Top Ten Games Worth Playing on the Oculus Rift at Launch

BNR: The Oculus Rift, for those who don’t know, is a new virtual reality headset that’ll put you in the game- it’ll come with a lovely, hi-res display and what makes it special is that it will track your head movements- you can look around and be inside a game. A while back, the Kickstarter for the Oculus was an incredible success, and many special development units were shipped out so that game devs could get to work on making games compatible with the Rift. The consumer version of the Rift has yet to ship.

Unfortunately, you can’t just use the Rift like a fancy new monitor- the games need special software to accommodate the Rift’s head-tracking ability that make it worth using in the first place. Fortunately, there are plenty of games coming straight to the Rift, along with some games that can employ Vireio, an open source 3D driver that makes it possible to play games that weren’t originally designed for the Rift. Here are ten games- some built with the Rift in mind, others born before the Oculus was a twinkle in Mr. Luckey’s eye.

Very important question is, is Oculus Rift coming to PS4 and X1 ???
Anyone knows ???

Jourdy2883942d ago

Unfortunately, not at the moment. While that would be AWESOME, it would also be very difficult to implement. Every first person game would have to built with the Rift in mind, or there would need to be some sort of driver solution like Vireio.

Could it come to the PS4/X1? Yes. Will it? Probably not, unless somebody figures out how to really make it work.

Games can be patched later on. The games do not have to be build around the OR. Some games will be enhanced by the 3D without head tracking. Which is enough for a lot of games.

@sidar

Oculus Rift requires 1080p 60fps in 3D, games will surely have to be adapted for that.

Edit - Requires as in, "convincible VR", low-res pixelated jaggy gaming is far from VR.

ChickeyCantor3942d ago (Edited 3942d ago )

@letros,

No it does not require 1080p. You can still render at a lower res. If their games are close to their PC builds they could easily apply different settings for their rendering quality. Engines such as Unreal compensate for that.

"low-res pixelated jaggy gaming is far from VR."

A device on your head isn't exactly VR either. Regardless of lowres and jaggies, the 3D environment would still be there.

And who says a fast AA technique can't be applied on lower res renders? They have all sorts of solutions for this. I really don't get why people make an issue out of it even though developers haven't even had the chance to tackle any of these "problems".

No where does it say it needs to be 60 fps either ( it's better but not a requirement ).

Early builds also had bad pixel density and still people felt like they were looking at things they felt like grabbing. It will just do fine especially with the new improved screen.

Oculus Rift is going to release for the PC platform.

Even if consoles eventually get the Rift or some other VR device, it won't be a very good experience.

Next generation console games are mostly going to be 30fps. This framerate is too low for good VR. The Oculus guys have stated over and over again that you need 60fps.

Of course, consoles could do 60fps with simpler games, but not with the kind of visuals that people expect from next generation titles.

Not only do you need to reach 60fps but it is important that it is steady (console games nearly always have frame drops). This causes the tracking of your head and your vision in the VR environment to lose sync when the framerate stutters.

Consoles won't have the power to output next gen visuals at a solid 60fps in 1080p stereoscopic 3D.

Remember with stereoscopic 3D a unique frame has to be rendered for each eye. Which is essentially equivalent to the GPU having to render 120fps.

Here's what Nate Mitchell, vice president of Oculus, had to say on the subject:

"You’ll want a decent gaming rig,” he explained. “Because you want to be running at 60 frames per second, with Vsync, in stereo 3D, and that takes a decent graphics card. The Oculus SDK really adds negligible overhead."
http://www.pcgamer.com/2013...

They have reiterated this in many different interviews.

Besides, when you try the Rift for yourself you'll see why 30fps is a problem.

You are probably thinking "30fps doesn't look so bad", and it doesn't when it's on a 2d screen that is feet in front of you, but when it is right in front of your eyes the judder and blur that it results in dramatically affect the immersion and overall quality of the experience.

Shuhei Yoshida did post "I say Oculus, you say ____?" on his twitter. A few posts later one of the Oculus guys responded "Would you like a demo?" to which Shu replied that he'd love to.

In other words, Sony and Oculus are talking.

Games that my body is ready to enjoy 100% on the Oculus Rift for years.
-Arma3
-Elder Scrolls Online
-Titanfall
-Lock On Flamming Cliff

GrownUpGamer3941d ago

This > Oculus Rift < is more important than PS4 or Xbox One in this next gen yet you don't see/read many comments about it here on n4g.

This is the reason why im going to ignore the consoles at launch. Im more interested in upgrading my PC and have this than buy a new console.

Actually there already is one...

Jourdy2883942d ago

Wow. I can't believe I forgot about the VB, neat that there's an emulator for it that runs on the Rift!
