PS, We Love You: Harnessing the Power of PlayStation 3

When Sony launched the PlayStation 3 gaming console in 2006, its graphics were muted; designers didn’t know how to handle the system’s complicated Cell processor. But now, after six years and four PS3 games’ worth of experience, development studio Naughty Dog has what promises to be a visual high point in the PS3 title The Last of Us.

In fact, the main lesson of the PS3’s existence might be that the evolution of graphics within a single console’s lifespan can be more impressive than the leap from one generation to the next. The PlayStation 4 is supposed to arrive at the end of this year, but developers won’t learn to harness its power for quite a while. Until that happens, here’s a look back at the PS3’s watershed visual moments.

Let's Wait till Beyond Two Souls Releases.

MastaMold3964d ago

Beyond Two Souls also looks fantastic in the graphics department. Another most buy title for PS3 cant wait

_QQ_3964d ago

I wouldn't call a Button prompt interactive movie a "must buy". It's only a must buy for fans of that very niche market.

andrew223964d ago

@Lopez. Last time I checked it had shifted around 3 million copies. Niche? hardly.

MastaMold3964d ago (Edited 3964d ago )

@lopez_josue, Beyond Two Souls gameplay does not seem niche.

minimur123964d ago

@nix

I got it 5 months after launch, in March (my bday :D) and just a few months ago- it packed up.

You served me well, mr 40GB PS3 - now I hae a superslim 320GB :D (personal HDD ofc)

MotorStorm, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted and Ratched & Clank all still look very good today, 2008 had GT:Prologue, MGS4 and WipEout HD as graphical highlights, also still look good today. 2009, KillZone 2, inFamous, Uncharted 2, still look good today. God of War, Heavy Rain, GT5 in 2010 and, well they just keep on coming. Especially this year is quite expensive, and although I can hear my old fat PS3 has problems doing overtime I'm afraid I can't show mercy, must play it all before the PS4 is out. Including GTA5, oh dear.

Victorvondoom83963d ago

Yeah good graphics but at a price.....Mutiplayer only has 4 vs 4.Less than uncharted 3 5 vs 5.

PlayStation 3 Games That Desperately Need a PS5 Remaster

The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro47d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

darthv7247d ago

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

_SilverHawk_47d ago

resistance 1-3, killzone 1-3, uncharted 1-3, uncharted golden abyss, folklore, socom 4 , motorstorm, twisted metal, MAG, heavenly sword

Cacabunga47d ago

Killzone 2+3
Sly Thieves in Time
Crack in Time
God of War Ascension
Motorstorm
Modnation racer
Infamous 1+2

Profchaos47d ago (Edited 47d ago )

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

seanpitt2347d ago

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Iceball200048d ago

YEAAASSSSS! I miss this franchise and wanna play it so bad again.

Father__Merrin48d ago

The time is perfect for a resistance fall of man game campaign coop multiplayer

InUrFoxHole48d ago

The resistance series is str8 trash to me. Socom 3 I would welcome. Or killzone MP.

Marcus Fenix48d ago

A Resistance reboot will be awesome

Michiel198947d ago

That's what Bungie should make, Ill keep saying it until it happens

1Victor48d ago (Edited 48d ago )

Resistance was ok but Warhawk and Starhawk was better and kept me coming back for almost a decade of fun and petty revenge on the loud mouth unskilled players 🤣
Edit I loved capture the flag dropping the pot on the flag carrier was extremely satisfying as well as transforming your plane in bot form and stumping them to death 😱

Resistance was the best co-op fps I ever played after L4D2

Kingdom hearts was really sad at the end. The darkness when Jenny dies was shocking and sad

Mine have to be last of us, Joel's daughter. Maybe it hits different when you have kids vs bot. I'll throw ff7 up there to. On the verge of looking like some sort of love triangle then bam, death

I think Dom's wife's death in Gears 2 was sadder then Dom. Dom's death in Gears 3 just felt rushed.
