The big game of the next five years will focus on “actual relationships instead of shooting people.”
In stark contrast to today’s blockbusters, Lucas feels the next big thing will be something quite different.
During a panel at at the USC School of Cinematic Arts legendary filmmakers Steven Spielberg and George Lucas discussed the future of entertainment joined by Microsoft’s President of the Interactive Entertainment Business Don Mattrick with Julia Boorstin of CNBC acting as a moderator.
Besides predicting the implosion of the film industry with apocalyptic scenarios and a sizable dose of doomsaying Lucas and Speelberg set their bespectacled sights on video games, and started firing.
@Lovable: I doubt they invited him there to keep quiet.
Sure, he's entitled to "know when to keep quiet" when he does his own interest, but standing there with jaw agape letting two pundits tear gaming a new one isn't exactly laudable.
Edit: @Lovable below. Which is in fact a rather contemptible conduct, and speaks volumes.
When did the guy said he cares about videogame? He cares about the money he makes from working in a videogame industry, but other than that it's all about work.
f by speaking his opinion will tarnish the relationship between them and could potentially lose the business why would he say anything? Seriously.
@Abriael Above
You can't really judge the guy based on that. You would do the same if it means securing your job and earning more money.
"Business man knows when to speak and keep quiet."
Then Don mustn't be much of a business man after his "stick with 360" comment lol.
What's more important is, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas are has-beens, they haven't made a good movie in years.
"Steven Spielberg and George Lucas are has-beens"
They are both actively contributing to the situation they're complaining about. The literal very heights of hypocrisy
How do they expect video games to be as emotionally attaching as movies or even books?? It's freaking interactive entertainment!! we want to have fun playing games not F$#KING cry while holding a controller!! plus, how do you expect me to get head shots with teary eye?!?! How Spielberg and Lucas?! Hooooow?!
"The second you get the controller something turns off in the heart, and it becomes a sport."
Sad that the popularity of games like Call of Duty and Madden promote that misconception.
Lucas? Whatever, he's been crazy for a LONG time. But Spielberg. For shame.
"Business man knows when to speak and keep quiet"
.....is sitting by while 2 important people insult your product a time to keep quiet?
Business man knows when to speak and keep quiet.
I seem to recall something about submarines and buy a 360. The one time he *could've* done some good PR, Spielberg & Lucas DRM'd his tongue.
diss video games but praise kinect?! :o
lol :D
they must know nothing about video games then '-_-
I cried one time during gaming. It was when my 360 rrod and i purchased a PS3 and Uncharted, TEARS OF JOY!!!!
I think this kind of criticisim is exactly what this industry needs if it wants to move foward. I feel like I have been playing the same games this gen that I played during the 90s (fps, hack n' slash, platformers, rpg, racing) only with higher resolutions and better sound/voice acting. Some games can feel so generic (Call of Duty, Guitar Hero and a few others) that I sometimes wonder if they are being "developed" using some kind of Wizard Tool that generates the source code for a game by simply inputting values into a screen prompt and clicking next.
These men may be wrong on some points (video games and emotions), but they are certainly right about this industry needing to create more accesible and varied experiences. Perhaps this really is a good time to bring back VR!
People who read that ridiculous headline instead of the Variety article are being misled by a a-hole from dual-shockers with his agenda.
http://variety.com/2013/dig...
Neither diss video games.
And just because they don't mention anything Mattrick says doesn't mean he remained quiet.
"Fortunately, we have a product for people who aren't able to get some form of connectivity,"
"It's called Xbox 360"
it's so true, he know when to speak and when to keep quite, no wonder he is success, even xbone going to come out he still trying so hard to sell 360 to poor ppl
That's the problem with the industry, too many business men screwing it up. Sleazy people invading my hobby left and right. Makes me feel ashamed to be a gamer sometimes.
It's unfortunate that we're mostly talking about what this MS exec didn't say rather than what Spielberg and Lucas did say.
Off-Topic: You feel ashamed to be a gamer? Because it's a business? That generates profits?
Drama queen much?
If tarnishing a working relationship with someone who under sells your work is bad than I don't want to ever be right
They are trying hard to sell Kinect, remember that google glass/kinect hybrid thing. This so called future is what's on their minds. Don't be surprised as I think Kinect runs a lot deeper than Microsoft. There is a reason for this always watching, always connected attitude. MS is being pimped by someone much bigger than the good ole USA
No. He's a douche. Plain and simple.
Even a business man knows when to speak up and defend his business. Don's just a pussy thats too chicken shit to speak out against big names like Spielberg and George Lucas.
The two, think theyre GOD's in the movie industry. When you become that arrogant, you are no longer relevant.
Perhaps he's not been following where ND and QD are taking the industry? It certainly reads like that.
Ico, Shadow of the colossus, journey, heavy rain and the last of us... just to name a few of the games they should consider more than just dumb shooters.
George Lucas thought that Jar Jar Binks was a good idea.
Spielberg thought that Indy IV was a good idea.
They are both old men, fading into irrelevance.
Don Mattrick comes across as a tool.
we need some perspective here.
Lucas is talking about games being bad, yet his company lucasarts made one of the best games of all time, it was highly rated by critics and gameers.
Knights of the old republic, it resonated so much with gamers they still want number 3!
Hes talking out of his ass IMO.
And Don is a clown
Only fanboys care what a director says about something like that. Plus, this article is just trying to get hits. It's pointless. Spielberg is a fan of games and this article makes it sound like he was dissing games and he's not. It's pointless like 95% of the articles here.
@Belking:
"Spielberg is a fan of games"
"The second you get the controller something turns off in the heart, and it becomes a sport"
These are his words. So much for "fan of games".
@Belking
He is here for the 5% guys...why else would he be here? You read everything here just like everyone else dude lol
Lucas and Spielberg are washed up. They have a whole lot to say with nothing recently to back it up.
So true, who cares what 2 old men have to say about video games...... video games they probably never played from start to finish ever if they even ever played a great game before period.
Omg no.
Just play The Last of Us, and their entire argument becomes as useless as a solar powered flashlight, or an inflatable dart board.
Damn you just shot down two of my work-in-progress inventions. I still have hope for my submarine screen door.
I never thought I'd agree with you for once, but here I am agreeing lol
The movie industry is threatened by the time and money consumers spend on video games. Naturally they will talk down upon games because they are competition.
What they fail to realize is that some games are more a movie and a game all in one. Games aren't written by the same people writing the code anymore. There are Hollywood writers penning stories. There are world renowned composers scoring the soundtrack. There is every bit as much professionalism and artistic quality in games as there are in movies, and possibly more due to the interactive nature.
Take The Last of Us - Hollywood has been doing apocalyptic movies for years and none have garnered the universal praise as it has. Plus, you get to play it and live it instead of watching it on a screen and having no input.
If movie execs want to see better games, they need to stop signing away rights to their franchises to developers who make crappy tie-ins.
@ifritAlkhemyst
Fair enough - those are excellent movies! I should have said "in general, post-apocalyptic movies don't garner universal praise".
The road.....for real. Would not be surprised if that was inspiring material for naughty dog..worked well from where I'm standing
@Spinal
This! Problem is, those 2 old men are in bed with the wrong partner and are out of touch with the medium of games as a whole. Bold generalisations considering Steve's spawn play COD, and isn't he also doing a Halo TV thing? Dude, that's exactly the kind of pew pew 'sport' Lucas is deriding. So on the eve of The Last of Us coming out, they're talkin' up Kinect with Mattrick. Why weren't these 2 frumps sitting beside David Cage at TRIBECA?!
Them saying games haven't conveyed emotion or love grinds my gears too. I've teared up from more videogame charachters than StarWars CGI rastafarian aliens, I'll say that much. Losing my frikkin horse in Shadow of the Collosus gapes Padme's death scene wide open. Pixel horse for the win. No midichlorians needed.
Damn son. You just took nerdy to a who'll new level. The fact I understood your references probably means I agree. But i'm not happy about it, street cred be damned! XD
There are so many things wrong with those producers statements on games...
I completely disagree with their interpretations of it.
Every time I see this guys face it just reminds me of the devil of gaming. Everytime I see an article with this guys face. You know its bad news for gamers
Exactly man, every time you read Don Mattrick's name you know something bad is about to happen
and movies are better? look at least with a game I can play it over and over again and depends on how good the game is it can last for years but with movies I watch once and im done with it. especially todays films hollywood just sux now and so does tv with there reality tv shows and fixed sporting events.
"The second you get the controller something turns off in the heart, and it becomes a sport"
He hasn't been playing many games lately has he.
Haha I love the idea that only women and girls can appreciate a sympathetic and engaging story. Everyone knows that men are only heartless killing machines, right?
Their comments are hilarious because they act like movies don't pander and cater to the broadest and lowest audience. It's obvious that Spielberg and Lucas have never played a game in their lives.
Don never cared, not news.
But Spielberg, just go back to Starbucks with your 2007 Macbook.
These two obviously don't play video games. As for Lucas, the guy who okayed Hayden Christensen to play Darth Vader: he knows nothing about character development and should shut the hell up.
Oh my goodness, they weren't even "attacking" video games. I love how the op exaggerates. And in all honesty I agree with them. Things have to change. Controllers will eventually go by the way side as these other input methods become better and better.
No one is saying stop making the shooters; just add to the industry with other type of emotional content.
They're saying that emotional content isn't there now. Which is false. No ifs and no buts.
No exaggeration there.
Well that my friend is a subjective matter. In all my years of gaming I was only emotionally moved once and that was just recently in the walking dead. Controller and all I was still emotionally engaged but Imagine they created a game similar to Milo; The original Kinect Demo. Which has you engaging an NPC verbally throughout the game and getting feedback from your comments. Thats what I want to see...
Ive Been playing hard core games for more than 20 yrs and I see myself fizzing out. I used to sit down and play MP until my eyes were dry and red but now it just doesnt give me that desire. I might play 10 min and lose interest.
"I" need a change in gaming and im not talking mobile revolution. I want the game to still be a strong experience I just want a different one. Kind of tired of rinse, wash, repeat industry...
Something has to change. You think 50yrs from now youll stick be using a game paddle and blurays. Has to change eventually
@Godz
They weren't?
1) "The second you get the controller something turns off in the heart, and it becomes a sport."
2) "Lucas was quick to add that the gaming industry can and will probably achieve that kind empathetic characters, but it hasn’t so far because the effort has been thwarted by hard-core gamers who enjoy onscreen violence too much."
So hardcore male gamers are just violent neanderthals? How would they explain RPGs like Ni No Kuni where the boy just wants his dead mother back and spends the aftermath fixing others' broken hearts when he can't fix his own? The "Titanic" game Lucas wants already exists, times over.
3)..."where suddenly you’ve done an actual love story or something and everybody will be like ‘where did that come from?’ Because you’ve got actual relationships instead of shooting people."
See? To them every game's the same. No credit where its due. Frick. I have to force myself to try anything but Paragon in Mass Effect due to my charachter's relationships. I couldn't shoot Mordin in the back. I couldn't screw over Wrex. I'd shoot an Ewok any day though lol.
I see where you're coming form Im just saying the word attack might be a bit much. But I do agree about the controller point.
Lets live in a different world for a sec. Imagine the kinect/playstation eye had the ability to offer no latency with their respected sensor/cameras. Say you played a game like Mass Effect and this relationship you say you feel you have with that character hits a point where you are talking to them and they are talking to you with expressions and what not. How much more engaging would that be? IMO that would be the next big thing as well.
Great, more Microsoft-related bull that disrespects hardcore gamers. They all deserve each other. Let them rot in their Kinect future (whatever that is).
@MassEffect23
This is the absolute worst week in MS' XBox history, and the facepalms just keep coming. Kojima's got Keifer Sutherland talking about the honor of playing Snake, Cage has Ellen Page impressed out of her mind, Don Mattrick winds up in the balcony with those two old men from the Muppets lol.
@Godz
That kinda Star Trek holodeck stuff would be great, but the tech ain't there yet. With what we have to work with right now, they should still know enough to give props to Lee and Clem' from Walking Dead. Or at least Mattrick should.
Wow. I would have emptied my wallet to have seen the gutless Don Mattrick replaced in this panel with Ken Levine, David Jaffe, or Todd Howard to point out and counter Lucas’s and Spielberg’s ignorance here.
Old baby bombers don't like video games? In other news the sky is blue and water is wet.
Just go back to stealing Akira Kurosawa work morons.
It's "baby boomers". I wouldn't normally correct you, but I'm pretty sure the NSA is watching you now for saying that other word.
thanks, Maybe the NSA can proof read all our comments. That way we get something out of it.
FU Lucas, FU Spielberg. There just mad cuz the Gaming Industry is Bigger than the Movie Industry. MS is a Sellout, It's starting to become clear now.
I Get why Spielberg is doing a Halo show for the XBO now.
Please Spielberg lies and Lucas hasn't made good movie since....
Lincoln was Bull$!t. Im a black man and i can honestly say Red Tails was complete garbage.
J.J Abrams is holding it down now.
Maybe they should try mass effect, or Metal Gear series.
"The second you get the controller something turns off in the heart, and it becomes a sport."
Go and play Journey or something and realize you're wrong, you washed up has-been.
Lucas and Spielberg are very uninformed and is clearly out of touch with the gaming community and the industry.
For guys who wants to make games (in the case of Lucas has). They sure don't know what they are talking about.
Lucas is making these comments from his underground bunker right? And Spielberg had someone else write his comment but slapped his name on it, right?
Lazy has-beens at best.
This A-hole doesn't even defend games as they're being insulted by two old farts. Fuck M$.
Champion of the gamers!... Pfft. This story actually and surprisingly has pissed me off. fuck mattrick, that smug sleazy asshole and those two has-beens as well.
now I wonder how these people even get so high up the chain in an industry they don't care about, have no clue about and is just "another job" give ME a goddamn job. give any of us a job, someone who understands what gaming means and should mean.
I have many four letter words that I want to call both Lucas and Spielberg.
The quality of the latters work has dropped dramatically over the last decade. And if you mention Lincoln, I will laugh, as that is one of the dullest films i've ever seen. DDL performing as he always does, does not make a good film.
And Lucas made The Phantom Menace.
Ha!
"Spielberg Diss Video Games but Praise Kinect"
What a nut.
How you gonna hate on games but direct a tv series based on one of the most reknown games around (halo). so bass ackwards.
could care less about either of the two pole shiners
Mattrick stands silent because he is agree that movie and TV is better than game. That's why Xbone is more focused on TV than game.
lol after working with MS for HALO TV, Mr. Spielberg stabs that company by saying that?.
What kind of attitude does he have?. Y'know as much as I hate MS these days due to stupid policy for next gen, but this statement coming from Hollywood icon is not acceptable.
Mr. Spielberg should play Uncharted, MGS, The last of US and other third party titles like SKYRIM, Bioshock infinite just to see the beauty and greatness of the story.
This is getting ridiculous, there is absolutely nothing wrong with keeping quiet. We all know how spoilt these holly wood actors and directors are. I am sure that Don Mattrick disagrees but if he openly disagreed with Spielberg, that Halo TV show would have been abandoned.
All of you are so full of yourselfs and eager to see microsoft fail. Tretton would have done exactly thesame thing. in that scenario it was best to remain quiet or the consequences would have been similar to what happened to Adam Orth
If a game like journey can be lauded and evoke many emotions without any words, then Steven and George need to re-educate themselves in the entertainment business.
@Conan-O-Brady, Exactly the games I would mention, Ico and TLOU have just as much emotional power than any movie.
These old farts should not comment on things they know fuck all about.
Video games are just another for of storytelling, there was time when films were looked down upon by the fan of books.
So people are starting to attack legends like Spielberg and Lucas just because they are involved with MS. Thats why I hate all fanboys, they are the biggest hypocrites on this planet, the PS ones are the worst!
"So people are starting to attack legends like Spielberg and Lucas just because they are involved with MS."
OMG did you even read what they said about the game's industry?
If you really understood , it was not about these two involved with MS, it was about their perception or view of what Gaming is and how it cannot display emotion to the player like the Movie industry does. and that's subjective for their Opinion, but many would disagree with their view about the game industry and some would even say their view is quite narrow.
Look at David Cages Kara:
http://www.youtube.com/watc...
That is exactly why Spielberg and Lucas are being looked at in a negative light right now in this thread and Don had a chance to defend Game's media for "its not just no emotion being showed to the player with games" there is games with many ways to show emotion, engaging stories, but he did nothing, just sat there.
he had a chance to point
Spielberg and Lucas to a game that showed plenty of emotion and an engaging story
http://www.youtube.com/watc...
again:
http://www.youtube.com/watc...
but he did nothing.
yeah Don STFU words cannot express the mess you want to do in the games industry because of your greed. There are more friendly ways to make money with the box.
So according to these two guys, the next earth-shatteringly innovative game will be an interactive chick-flick that is "better with connect?"
I can see from an artistic perspective -and from two prominent movie makers' perspective, how video games in general currently do not live up to *their standards of character portrayal, empathy etc. (uncharted, MGS, and heavy rain come close though to name a couple titles), but there are better ways to achieve such visions than using cheap gimmicks and appealing to a segment of the gaming audience that tends to be more casual. I'm not saying ALL girls and women like casual stuff, since I know girls that love to play hardcore games, but you can't ignore the fact that the majority of them are casual gamers.
1.) "their" -suggesting the author's consideration of the matter as being subjective. No ire necessary.
Their comments on video games shows just how hilariously uninformed they are. Clearly they haven't played a video game in the last 15 years.
To argue Lucas and Spielbergs point that we don't emphasize with characters. I kind of disagree, it stems from how much time you get to watch or play that character regardless on screen or in game. For the most part if a partner in a game dyes I'm not at a loss because I knew them (matter of speaking) for a few hours unless it's a beloved character with a series. But look at big names like Snake, change them, kill them, or whatever and we get upset because we've spent time with these characters. Overall though I much prefer a horror game over a movie anyday. Horror movies are less scary compared to a horror game I.M.O. because in games you have to decide how you make it out, how much ammo, health, escape route, etc. Some movies the people are so stupid I root for the bad guys.
The Titanic of gaming?
Say hello to Xbox One. Hasn't even set sail and it hit an ice berg
no Spielberg the Titanic of gaming is coming out tomorrow on PS3, its called The Last of Us, hell it happened months ago too called Bioshock Infinite.
"Because you’ve got actual relationships instead of shooting people.”
I just love this statement. These two just remind me of the average gamer who only buys cod. They think that games can't be taken seriously because all you do is shoot people and never form bonds with characters.
I advise both of them to play games such as The Walking Dead and The Last of Us, and then come and talk to me about games not forming "actual relationships" with characters.
What a bunch of has beens and George Lucas has done nothing except for Star Wars and now he thinks he's some sort of an incredible director whom everyone looks up to. What a complete joke.
I thought gaming can't tell stories? what happened now you want to tell stories in games? what a bunch of hypocrites.
GTA style open world Star Wars game. With different planets, galaxies and races. Space travel like wing commander/ privateer. Character creation like on Skyrim, with options for 3rd or 1st person like Skyrim.
Options to become a Jedi, Sith, bounty hunter, etc.
