'Grand Theft Auto V' expected to sell 20 million units in first six months

XMNR: Publisher Take Two Interactive is expecting big things out of Grand Theft Auto V for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 when it releases on Sept. 17 with it and other Rockstar Games titles providing a full 65 percent of its fiscal 2014 revenue. What does that represent in terms of the number of copies sold? Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter pegged that figure in an investor's note released Tuesday.

Likely

GTA has alot of fans and there are 140 mill + consoles out there.

Prcko3992d ago (Edited 3992d ago )

don't agree
gta V gonna loose some numbers because it's close to new console era release

darren_poolies3992d ago

Not going to affect the sales at all. Also it's 'lose' not 'loose'.

Captain Qwark 93992d ago (Edited 3992d ago )

just because new consoles are coming doesnt mean all 140 million owners out there now are going to get one day 1 lol they will need something to play and even for those who do, this is gta, you get one every few years so most people want to play it.

hell im planning to get the new xbox day 1 ( unless its always online ) and im still gonna get gta5. 20 million in 6 months combined ps3,360 sales will be easy for gta5

papashango3992d ago (Edited 3992d ago )

after 6 months? nope.

If it launches with next-gen consoles maybe. Lifetime maybe.

12-14 max and that's being generous. It's been years since GTA 4 and in that time the youngins have grown and experienced many more sandbox games.

Sam Fisher3992d ago

Count me out, gta hasnt given me a good reason to buy it. I wait upon games like updates on tech, if you didnt make a big jump on its successor, you sir are not have my money, period.

3-4-53992d ago

People will buy PS4 / Xbox 720, but they will also buy this for their current system as well.

omi25p3992d ago

If you think this list isnt enough of a reason to buy a game then i doubt you have bought a game this generation. http://www.officialplaystat...

I_LOVE_MYSELF3992d ago

I'm buying a copy, that's for sure.

Knight_Crawler3992d ago (Edited 3992d ago )

20 million minus 1....no thanks R*, GTA 5 will be a bargin bin purchase for me.

After the borefest and dissapointment that was GTA4 and Max Payne 3, I dont think I can ever buy another R* game on day one.

The only thing that gives me some faith in R* is RDR which is the most awesom game that I have played this gen.

Thatguy-3103992d ago

It will reach it. But not faster than COD. COD is this Gens GTA in the thought that mindless young teens rush out to buy it.

raWfodog3992d ago

Yeah, but it took almost three years for GTA IV to reach 20 million

http://www.gamasutra.com/vi...

They really are optimistic.

IronFistChinMi3992d ago

GTAV will be released to a much larger install base, so it can be done.

raWfodog3992d ago

It's interesting to note that Take Two is only projecting 15-17 million sold by the end of the March 2014. It's Pachter who's expecting 20 million.

Not saying it can't happen but I'm skeptical.

dasbeer883992d ago

Don't forget the long list of controversies after GTA V comes out in stores. Modern police are going to be VERY busy months afterwards.

Wingsfan243992d ago

I don't think so. It's popular, but with the way most games have been selling lately, I think they should be expecting a little less than that.

Crazyglues3992d ago (Edited 3992d ago )

@ PockyKing

I would agree with you, but I think they look at GTA V as recession proof like CALL OF DUTY which seems to sell it's numbers no matter what.. Black-Ops is over 22 million copies sold..

I think R* is kind of the same when it comes to GTA it's one of those franchise that just does it's numbers no matter what, it's just one of those games people just buy..

So 20 million it is indeed possible...

And if they do a PC and PS4 version I would change that possible
-to more like, "OH HELL YEAH...! " they will do 20 mil..

sprinterboy3992d ago

agree with 20 Million sold but not in the first 6 Months

famoussasjohn3992d ago (Edited 3992d ago )

I'd say it's possible, GTA 4 sold 6 million in a week and went on to sell 25 million all together.

Crazyglues3992d ago (Edited 3992d ago )

@ sprinterboy

yeah not in the first 6 months didn't mean to imply that like the article is saying, I just meant I do think it's going to do 20 million copies sold..

The game is going to be huge that's for sure... Especially when you consider this one looks really amazing..

Wingsfan243992d ago

Yea should made mention of not in the first 6 months haha. In its lifetime, I'm sure it will reach 20 Mil easy. Just not that fast.

Salooh3992d ago

Except we get better games from rockstar not worst like call of duty..

raWfodog3992d ago

Actually, Take Two is only expecting 15-17 million by March 2014. Pachter is the one saying 20 million.

stage883992d ago

Wow that is quite a lot. Would love to see that happen but in 6 months, I really don't know.

MilkMan3992d ago

Get ready for, "lower than sales projections" Type articles. Then the "we are laying off everyone and their mother" articles followed by "if we couldn't sell 25 million copies in 1 hour, then the industry is in the verge of collapse" articles.

Cost of realistic looking movement.

Rockstar need to learn that 12 years of work and 5000 employees doesn’t account for one persons opinion on the internet…

Profchaos35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

Oh and hundreds of millions of dollars in revanue to boot.

Lots of complaints about gta ever since the hd era started and yet it's bugger than its ever been with gta vi up to 180 million trailer views alone. The next game is shaping it be be another genre defining game

MetalGearsofWar35d ago

They already learned they dont have to actually make a great game

sagapo35d ago

The controls of RDR2 felt a but cluncky indeed, but it’s not as bad as some make it out to be. At no point did I get the feeling my experience with the game was held back or ruined by the controls.
But it can never hurt to optimize them a bit, sure.

Zhipp35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

I did accidentally beat someone to death a couple times. An unfortunate mistake but besides that I didn't have any problems with the controlls

jznrpg35d ago

Red Dead Redemption felt clunky at first but I got used to it fairly quick. I thought 2 was easier to control but it could be my experience with the first game helped me out. Great games

Profchaos35d ago

I wouldn't call Rockstar games characters clunky instead they feel like they move with Weight they are not twitch controls press x to instantly snap onto cover the characters instead move like a actor would ducking behind cover they are exposed while they get there.
