Has 2013 Been Filled with Too Many Disappointments So Far?

OnlySP: At the end of last year, it seemed like this year would be a pinnacle in the world of video games. Looking at the early release schedule there were literally oodles of games that we thought would be some of the best games of the generation. Some lived up to what fans expected, but unfortunately a large majority of this year’s releases have ended up in a disappointment.

fermcr4005d ago (Edited 4005d ago )

I've been enjoying this years games. For me Tomb Raider is the best game this year... until know.

Root4005d ago

I thought Tomb Raider was ok but Bioshock and Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch did it for me

Tomb Raider....I don't know, it just didn't feel like a Tomb Raider game. Good game but not what it's about

TopDudeMan4004d ago

Agreed, tomb raider is awesome.

The button prompts annoyed me at first, but they were fewer and farther between as the game progressed and I thought the story was great, too.

God of War Ascension Multiplayer has had me hooked since day 1. I literally cant stop playing it. When Im not playing it, I want to stop what Im doing and play it. Thats how multiplayer is done.

Pretty much the opposite of disappoint....

* PS4 news

* Xbox 720 about to be announced

* Wii U announced new 3D Mario, Zelda U, Mario Kart..

* 3DS is just becoming better by the week
- FE:A , Luigi's Mansion, DKCR 3DS, about to get mario golf , Pokemon, Rune Factory 4, Mario Party 3DS, Yoshi's Island 3DS, Bravely Default 3DS, LoZ ALttP 2 3DS.....

* New Sony games..new Sony console...better controller and a focus towards gamers = awesome

* PC has some solid games releasing this year as well including Shadow run Returns..

* E3 will be epic considering what will be talked about and other random surprises that always happen.

* 2013 into 2014 has been set up nice for us.

* GTA5 is releasing this yea and while we don't have a ton of info, it's at least known when we get to play it....

* None of these things should be a surprise...this was all announced and known about and nobody should be upset.

* I've missed out on mentioning probably 20-30 good games as well as other gaming news I can't recall at the moment.

This article is lame.

ThatKanadianKid4005d ago

That's probably why the title says "so far". Of course this still good stuff coming this year and the article makes note of that. So your comment is pretty lame too.

Wingsfan244005d ago

I'm assuming you wrote all that simply cause the title. Guess we've all forgotten about Sim City, Aliens: Colonial Marines...especially A:CM? Just been an up and downer year so far. Second half of the year is looking great though, I'm certainly excited for it.

Tr10wn4004d ago

fanboys be fanboys *nope*

brish4004d ago

I think we need at least three more major disappointments! ;-)

I_LOVE_MYSELF4004d ago (Edited 4004d ago )

I agree completely with your in depth statement. It all boils down to what console you own, but gaming overall is great this year so far.

The Vita and WiiU are doing horrible, The Xbox is lacking compelling exclusives, but is healthy and the PS3 is STILL getting stronger. It is constantly improving. The instant game collection has owned so much this year. Hitman soon :D

Games wise... Dead Space 3 was a predictable decline, Gears of War seemed to disappoint and as a God of War fan... well... I can't even be bothered to try Ascension, but the reviews indicate that we really didn't need a new GodOW.

Ni No Kuni, Monster Hunter, Bioshock, Tomb Raider, Luigi's Mansion 2, Fire Emblem, Injustice are just a few examples of what we have got this year. The gaming world is BOOMING!

For me, yes, Tomb Raider, God of War Ascension and Dead Space 3 were just OK, nothing breathtaking or amazing.

Wingsfan244005d ago

I've had a hard time even bothering to finish a lot of games that received sequels this year. Crysis 3, Dead Space 3 etc. All good games though none the less.

Christopher4005d ago (Edited 4005d ago )

While not going to say anything about your opinion on the games you listed, I do have to say that when I see a 'gamer' say stuff like you about a plethora of highly rated games, I oftentimes wonder how miniscule the difference is between OK and Great considering how rare it is to find a game that does everything well and that multiple games this year have done at least a few things very well.

What about Bioshock: Infinite? Ni No Kuni? Rayman Legends?

MilkMan4005d ago

not really, just bored with all the shooters. I want to play lots of different games and have FUN with them. I found myself either playing my WiiU more often, or my Alienware to play strategy games.
My Xbox and Ps3 where collecting dust for most of 2012.
They have a real hard sell for a gamer like me come this next-gen.

Hufandpuf4004d ago

Recent FPSs:
COD Blops 2
Far Cry 3
Crysis 3
Bioshock Infinite

that's not a lot. and they are all great games.

humbleopinion4004d ago (Edited 4004d ago )

Seriously? You actually bought a WiiU, which is probably the most game-barren console in the past decade or so.
We know it's lacking in the games department so you didn't make this purchase based on actual catalog - perhaps just based on future promises. In that case, how hard will it be to sell you a next-gen console that actually aims up high?

yesmynameissumo4005d ago

Nothing disappointing about Ascension imo. Fun game is fun.

Wingsfan244005d ago

God of War is certainly fun, just wasn't all that impressed by the story. SSM made it sound like it'd be a lot more touching and personal to Kratos then it actually was.

yesmynameissumo4005d ago

That depends on your view. Seeing the games played by the Furies, the scale of the environments and battles. As a guy who owns and has beat every GoW game, I was very satisfied with the game. And online MP is like a bloody PowerStone!

Wingsfan244005d ago

Yup it's all just opinion. I think what really got me about the game was just how long you spent on "SPOILER" building that statue and how big of a portion that took up in the campaign. Wanted to see more places and fight more bosses haha.

RandomDude6554004d ago

Fans complain about Kratos angst
SSM tone down the character.
Fans complain about lack of angst.

lol lol

Jek_Porkins4005d ago

It hasn't been disappointing at all, I think the sales might be disappointing, but look back at when new consoles have been announced, really great games get overlooked because people are saving up for new consoles, games and experiences.

A few good examples would be Super Metroid for the SNES, maybe one of the best games of all time, but nobody bought it because the PS1 was coming out, and the N64 had been announced. Conker had the same issues, great game, but sold like poo because of the new console announcements.

I thought Tomb Raider, Gears Judgment, God Of War Ascension and a lot of other games were great, but I personally know people who opted not to buy some of these games because they are saving money for other consoles...

The Best Tomb Raider Games Ranked

We've gone on many adventures with Lara Croft. With another reboot in the making, Wealth of Geeks felt it was a good time to go down the nostalgia rabbit hole and remember the best of those tomb-raiding thrills.

I do agree that Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness was the worse one 😂 I remember playing some of it and I took it back. That game was just awful in every way. I bought it used at gamestop and glad they had that 7 day return policy for used games 😂

Pyrofire9553d ago

Would it be worth saying why?

ZeekQuattro53d ago

Simple. He's been hating on the Tomb Raider reboots for years. I can't imagine seeing them at the top of a best TR game list let alone being on the list in general sitting well with him because of it.

-Foxtrot53d ago

Zeek

“Hating”

No no, just pointing out how TR mutated into a generic action adventure game losing the appeal of what it once was when it was more about puzzles and platforming over going Rambo, slaughtering waves of enemies

But hey, continue being a dick and speaking about me like I’m not going to see the comment.

MeatyUrologist52d ago

Foxtrot, I'm curious if you have played the most recent games. Sure the 2013 reboot was hugely focused on combat, but each follow up became less and less about combat to the point where outside of a few large scale story missions I don't even remember combat being a part of shadow of the tomb raider. Shadow was so puzzle focused it actually was a bit much for me and I love the TR puzzles.

I still feel like Rise was the best of the series and I was a huge fan of the originals. To me it struck the perfect balance of exploration, platforming, puzzles, and combat. Not saying your opinion is wrong I'm just curious what you think they should have done different. Games do need to evolve somewhat to stay relevant. Would you prefer small linear jumping platform levels like the original?

RavenWolfx53d ago

I would agree Rise for 1 and the reboot as 2. Shadow is a bit high, though.

Sonic188153d ago (Edited 53d ago )

I think Shadow wasn't even develop by crystal dynamics. I thought it was the worse in the new trilogy

Pyrofire9553d ago

That's right. Shadow was developed by Eidos Montreal who who went and made Marvels Guardians of the Galaxy next. (Great game)
Meanwhile after Rise of the Tomb Raider, Crystal Dynamics made Marvels Avengers. (bad game)

MeatyUrologist53d ago

Agrees. First two are correct but Shadow should be around 5-6.

terstomp53d ago

For me, Legend should be alot higher (along with the other two ). Shadow, I enjoyed it, but has too much has fluff, as modern games tend to do. Playing the remastered series, and apart from the controls, is very good.

jznrpg53d ago

I really enjoyed the first 2 games, Legend and the first of the reboots and the rest I didn’t get into so I never finished.

robtion53d ago

Completely subjective list. I really liked Underworld, I preferred Lara's design. That said I loved the horror/uncharted feel of the reboot. I think all the TR games have strengths and weaknesses. None are objectively better in every way.
