Going to be nice when PS4 comes out and people won't need to buy these expensive gadgets just to share gameplay videos.

Eiffel4014d ago (Edited 4014d ago )

Unless the PS4 can render hours of gameplay in 1080p as well as being capable of streaming additionally in HD resolutions, there will always be a market for these devices.

I own a Hauppauge myself, and I can't think of a bigger pain in the long-winded ass then having to transfer gigabytes of video files from your console to your PC for editing purposes when you could just press record on your capture device and the files are directly on your PC once you stop. Simple convenience.

morganfell4014d ago (Edited 4014d ago )

Add to this some titles do run in 1080p and there is a solution on the market that can record that resoltion despited HDCP.

"Going to be nice when PS4 comes out and people won't need to buy these expensive gadgets..."

Do people actually believe this? Wow.

FrightfulActions4013d ago

Pretty sure the whole point of PS4's "Share" button is that players can record live gameplay and upload/share it online.

Sure these expensive boxes will probably give you more tools at your disposal and make editing more convenient, but the case remains that you won't NEED one of these to share gameplay videos.

Not sure why anyone would disagree with that, its just a fact.

Blacktric4013d ago

"its just a fact."

I'm sure you'll be able to record hours of gameplay directly onto your PS4's HDD...

You keep believing that.

FinalomegaS4014d ago

had this for a while and it took a bit of work to understand the whole thing. It's not as simple as it seems.

But once running it works easy. Editing is great too.

Just one major downside:

the sound options, I'll give my setup and you can probably relate:

HD console - connected to HDPVR2 - connected to HDTV - connected to PC

now if the unit is recording you have the software running, now the volume from the TV must come through the HDPVR2 which goes through the PC and since it's recording there is that 3 to 5 seconds of delay. You can't have the sound come through both and you can't mute the sound on the software recording or else you won't have any sound on the file...

I think there is some work around this but having the video and sound through HDMI single cable isn't a good set up.

a bit of trial and error i guess.

Eiffel4014d ago

I just muted my computer's audio while recording.

FinalomegaS4014d ago

oh you mean like opening the OS system sound at the bottom and muting everything or just the program running?

the one game i seem to be having the most problems with the sound is Mass Effect 3.

Not sure i keep getting no sound.

Can't wait for more PS4 support!

Christopher3639d ago

Technically, PS4 now compatible with Hauppauge Game Recorders. Hauppauge didn't do anything, Sony did.

GamerzElite3638d ago

Lol, but true. not only Hauppauge but others too... Elgato, Avermedia, Blackmagic....

isthe3639d ago

The PS4 just keeps getting better

Gazondaily3638d ago

This was the case when the update kicked in rrmoving HDCP protection. So why is this news now?

I tested my HD PVR Rocket at the time. Works a charm with the PS4.

candy_mafia3638d ago (Edited 3638d ago )

Forgive a (video capture) noob if this question seems dumb, but...why is a dedicated capture device needed?

Now that Share Factory is available with editing, commentary and music support. I understand you can even place raw footage on your PC and use any (theoretically) editor.

Then isn't it just a case of saving your work to a USB (or direct from PC), and then uploading to Youtube, or am I missing something here?

SonyNGP3638d ago

Higher quality recording, and editing options isn't limited to one application. Not to mention that some people like using their own equipment for recording and streaming.

candy_mafia3638d ago (Edited 3638d ago )

But isn't Share Factory 720P/30fps, and is that not the limit on Youtube?

It would make any higher quality (1080P/60fps) capture redundant on Youtube...right?

Ok I agree people like to use their own equipment to stream/capture, but my question was...now that we have Share Factory...is a external capture device needed?

this thing will be useless in 5 months :)

Eiffel3974d ago (Edited 3974d ago )

Highly doubtful as all that's been confirmed is that it can record, no mention of for how long, the extent of what you're able to record i.e gameplay and not the console interface or chat audio, live streaming, or if the render quality will even be good enough for production purposes. It's far more convenient and professional to use a PVR, no cutting corners around that. These devices have uses outside of gaming as well, you can use them to record TV through your DVR, and movies/shows on outdated formats for digital keepsake.

Agent_hitman3974d ago

Quote me on this, next gen machine wont be needing this anymore, since MS and Sony already stated that their next gen machine is capable of recording gameplay videos in realtime.. That's one strangest thing in the world, I would say!. sarcasm/

Coach_McGuirk3974d ago

I'd wait and see how the consoles' recording actually works, how long, what resolution, compression, etc before saying this will be obsolete.

I think we wont be needing this anymore next gen. The next gen hardware itself can record gameplay clips and share it to the world in an instant.
