Deadly Premonition: Director's Cut - Does the PS3 Version Bring Anything New to the Cult Game?

TechStuff: The first experience many gamers had with Deadly Premonition was a fairly strained one, until the game was given some time to impress. With a clunky control system and graphics that were closer to Playstation 2 levels rather than Xbox 360 it should have really been a game that was quickly forgotten as a failure, but this was not to happen with Deadly Premonition.

With a storyline and style that made many reminiscent of Twin Peaks the game became somewhat of a cult hit with its poor interface and bad design just adding to that weird and wonderful feel that turned out to be unique to some, and an underground hit was born. If you preserved with it, you were pulled into a mess of a game, but one that really did catch imagination. For others though the failings were too noticeable and it was quickly forgotten about. Now it’s time for Playstation 3 to get Deadly Premonition: The Director’s Cut, a game that looks to not only add to the story but to also try improve the controls as well as other issues like with the camera. Will it be able to create the same magic again or will an updated Deadly Premonition be more of a wounding for the games popularity when some clearly enjoyed the very things that weakened it in the first place?

FRAKISTAN4007d ago

@DangerouslyJack

why fail?

"The PlayStation 3 version was released only in Japan on the same date as the Xbox 360 version"

Google it Idiot

DangerouslyJack4006d ago

Because this is the director's cut.

He isn't interested in an old version when the NEW version comes out tomorrow.

Name calling?

Just proves your immaturity.

I honestly feel sorry for you. A man owns his mistakes.

However I'm left just owning you.

Umbasa4008d ago

Yeah, i missed the 360 version but i think i will grab this one because after all there is a reason they re-worked it, most low budget games do not get that second chance and coming over to ps3 knowing my sick, cooky and weird taste i am pretty sure i will love this mishap of a game. :) my hat off to the chiefs of this relaunch.

I don't know 39.99 is still a little too much to pay for a game of this...........

uhhhh....quality?

It’s sooooo janky but the story is so good and the agent is so quirky I loved it thouroughly, the story is that good that you can actually make it through all of its jankiness and issues .
It’s a diamond in the rough and rough is saying lighly.
This game deserves a remake out of any game I can think of .
If they fixed the combat ,driving and movement this would be one of my favorite games all time and it already is in a way.

The first time I turned on my flashlight was one of the funniest things I have ever seen in a game. His suit just sort of lights up. There's no physical flashlight in his hand--hilarious. It's also the only game I've played to truly capture the delightfull quirkiness of Twin Peaks. I'm with you on how much I like this game. Despite all of its flaws, it's a genuinely fun experience. "My coffee warned me about it," is probably my favorite line of all time in any video game.

I still haven't played the sequel, but I will some day.

I enjoyed this back during ps3 days. I'd buy it again if they re released it fixed up a little. I had fun with it.

ok I believe that Deadly Premonition 2 scene described in the article, takes the cake! Although one could argue that there are so many memorable ridiculous moments in this game.

Wish the F.E.A.R. franchise would get resurrected.

COG Considers: Why Are There So Many Games About Killers With Split Personalities?

This week on COG Considers, we tackle one of the most tired and unpleasant tropes in horror games: why games--and every other pop culture avenue--are so determined to paint people with Dissociative Identity Disorder as murderers.

Surprised killer7 isn't mentioned. This was the central premise of that game

KDblack1278d ago

Killer7 was mentioned, but only for one sentence because it's the central premise of the game. There wasn't really a need to go into detail.

gamerben1277d ago

Oh woops didn't catch it. Sorry mang

mastershredder1278d ago

Are they? You are fixed on Japanese games that are anime based/fashioned. Perhaps if you were not playing games that are similar to the animes that inspired them you would have more/different experiences.

When Cliche and Troupes are the building blocks, you can’t expect much. Just like you cannot expect good case study when the tester/observer has practically no variance in test subjects.

Sooooo many horror games out there... you really gotta explore some more.

KDblack1278d ago

I am aware! But games like Outlast or Remothered aren't really doing anything different, either--the most you could say is that Outlast hammers in that not all mental patients are dangerous. Just some of them. It really isn't just anime-inspired games that are doing this, even if you're counting Deadly Premonition among them. Bendy and the Ink Machine did it with Alice Angel, Krieg from the Borderlands games is this but played for laughs, and Dog/God from Fallout: New Vegas' Dead Money DLC is another example of both murder and weird, unrealistically rapid closure. This article was inspired after seeing one too many indie games on Steam with the premise 'discover the inner world of this tormented killer with DID.' Trust me when I say I'm exploring all kinds of horror games, and even outside those boundaries, because this is a really wide-reaching pattern.

That said, if you have any recs for more interesting/less stereotypical usage of characters with DID, hit me up.
