TechRadar: Things have only got easier for Microsoft and Sony. Oh Nintendo, times are tough. I know. But while there might be some rational thinking behind your decision to not hold a press conference at E3 this year, the timing could not feel more wrong.
If you were a 90s kid excited about Nintendo’s upcoming N64 console, you likely read something somewhere about the Nintendo 64 Disk Drive, also known as the 64DD or DD64.
Other nominees include games like SimCity & Tony Hawk's Pro Skater.
There are some good nominees in this list that are deserving to be inducted also, but I feel Metroid has had the most impact on the industry out of all of these. Look how Metroid influenced the evolution of the Castlevania games, and the "Metroidvania" subgenre of games have become a prevailing force in gaming today. Especially now, Metroidvanias are bigger than ever.
I can very much see Resident Evil being added later too, bc it really did popularize and define the survival horror genre. I would say that one is next in line.
If any Metroid game should get the honor it should be Super Metroid , it's perfection in my eyes . 30 years later and I still feel it's the most epic shit ever .
The GBA remake deserves it or Super Metroid, the original was a very sloppy and rushed game programmed in 3 months and it shows.
If you've never played the remake, it's absolutely a must play, fixes basically every flaw in the game. Check out ExoParadigmGamer's comparison video.
“Before even Kirby was born, HAL Laboratory released the super-cute puzzler Adventures of Lolo in 1989 and it has held up beautifully.” - A.J. Maciejewski from Video Chums.
I think-
Nintendo does not have much extra time this year.
PLUS:
1) Nintendo has been saying, "Seeing is different than playing."
-I think Nintendo is going to try and force the Press/Haters to play their games rather than turning their nose-up at the polygon counts. Having events with that focus rather than shows, could create more accurate E3 buzz.
-Ex. ZombiU & NintendoLand E3 Hands-On went great, compared to the people who just criticized its graphics from what they had seen during the show.
2) Last year their show failed to please, even while announcing a new model.
-Reggie made that infamous comment about our insatiable appetites.
-E3 is filled with Nintendo Haters who will hate no matter what.
-The Nintendo Directs and things like Sony's PS4 reveal Event can get more eyes and generate more buzz.
3) E3 shows cost time/money.
-Many people say that creating an E3 Demo or presentation- eats up a ton of Game Development or Management time.
-It generally stops all production and forces people to work on something that is not AS essential.
4) Lastly, Nintendo is testing it's Star-Power.
-It could work in their favor when everyone is wondering what they are or will be doing.
SO...
Is this the BEST idea? How should I know? I can't see the future and I don't know everything about the gaming industry or Nintendo.
BUT-
I do know that sometimes a Change in Routine leads to something better... (or worse).
Its going to be a hard holiday season for them this year.
They are so fortunate to have the DS. The wii-u has a huge problem getting any traction. If I were Nintendo I would stop production of Wii-u, and release a wii-2 with a Zelda and a Mario game at launch
I'm confused. Some people are saying Nintendo isn't going to be at E3, they're just gonna make Nintendo Directs. Others are saying they ARE gonna be at E3, but they aren't gonna do a big show. Others are saying they are, but they won't announce anything new.
Will someone please clarify this for me?
I think so, big time. Its like the whole gaming industry is on the edge of a knife and it could tip either way. The next gen could all be won or lost in the next 6 months to a year.
