Why deprive everyone else of great exclusives just because you won't be buying both? They'll still be there for you to play when/if you eventually buy the other console.

Exclusives are usually the best of the best because they get the most attention, money and utilize the console to its fullest potential. This is why no multiplat game on Xbox looks like Gears and no multiplat game on PS4 compares to God of War 3.

Exclusives are going to happen, why bother having more than one choice of platform if there's nothing to differentiate it from any other.

Also I never said I wanted all the exclusives on one platform. I will own all consoles at some point in time, I always do.

I played more on my ps3 than xbox360 this gen so next console will got to be PS4 as my first choice .I likely will get PS4 day one and if nextxbox will be out 2014 then it will be perfect timing

exclusives give a console thier identity. I say mario or link you think of Nintendo. this gen however, with third and second party exclusives becoming a dying art,I suspect features exclusive to a console to build that identity.

No they don't. Exclusives aren't the big deal they used to be. Otherwise PS3 wouldn't be losing to Xbox Year after Year in sales in the USA.... God of War 4 and the new Gears would of sold much more that they did.

Twisted Metal,the new one sucks. The Smash Bros Clone sucks.. Fable has sucked.... and so on.

Now that's not to say they're not needed ever. Of course some of them are great... they're just not as big and needed as before. Third party games are awesome these days, and Third party games have been winning game of the year awards more than exclusives.

Sure they matter, it's the main reason to buy one console over another, or to even buy a console at all.

If everything was multi-platform then I would just use one of the many PC's I already have rather than bother with any console.

To you maybe. Not everyone cares and may only buy one console. One that might be the best priced, or offers the best online experience, more family friendly, more party games with split-screen, or like you said the best exclusives. There are many reasons why a consumer buys a certain console.

What is obvious is the 3rd party exclusives have really gone by the wayside ever since the PS2. Which ironically enough was the last time a console totally dominated that generation. I imagine many PS2 owners back then (and potential console buyers looking for a new console) wanted all games to be on the PS2. It just make the decision that much easier.

When 3rd party publishers share the wealth it makes it that much harder for any of the console makers to totally dominate.

Don't think so, the least selling games are Sonys first party exclusives. Except for GT.
Almost every medicore multplat game sells more (I know, bigger customer base)
But great exclusive games selling great on other platforms, jut look atvsome of xbox360,Nintedno,PC exclusives, only Sony exclusives are failing, and that's because most of them suck, and more so with each new iteration.

*we know Guerrilla Games have two teams and now they are working on a new IP besides KZSF and KZM.
* same for Naugthy dogs, they are working on another game besides TLOU.
* same for Santa Monica who have a new IP or game or two.
* and there is Sony japon studios (Japon is coming back into making great games this gen, most suck last gen)

* I bet Insomniac will make exclusive PS4 games, I don't think fuse will sale to well.. it will do good enough, but they have few teams to and they can handle it.

Exclusives are the reason you buy a console but with development costs of big titles increasing studios will want to maximise returns. Will be easier for developers to go cross platform next gen given that it sounds like next gen consoles are running on very similar architecture.

IMO, the Playstation already has desirable exclusives. The Xbox needs more of them. Halo, Forza, and Gear of War are nice but they need more exclusive franchises that aren't in XBLA.

It seems obvious the direction Sony has taken the PS3 with new IP's and exclusives this generation has dramatically aided them in grabbing significant marketshare worldwide.

These titles did more than assist the PS3 against inferior multiplatform titles which haunted the system in the early years of the PS3. Without those experiences the PS3 would not be in the position that it is in today, so indeed those 1st and 2nd party AAA and indie exclusives did wonders for the Playstation brand.

Moving forward and taking this same software approach into the next console generation with their new uber social connectivity experience, with inferior ports as a thing of the past and Sony does have an attractive offering that can't be ignored.

Exclusives are most certainly important. Alan Wake, Mass Effect and Ninja Gaiden were my reasons for owning Xbox. I still have my Xbox but those exclusives all went multi plat. ME and NG went to PS3 and Alan Wake went to PC. I can't get Uncharted or anything ND anywhere else. Just as people can't get Halo anywhere else.

Losing exclusives devalues the reason for my purchase. Gaining them makes the buy that much more enticing for consumers.
