There isn't any opportunity for it to find an untapped market?

MariaHelFutura4020d ago

Absolutely. Reign supreme....NO.

It has potential, but not for the core gamer.

It's best market would be to sell to colleges and universities so students can get familiar with programming for a console-like experience using something familiar (Android OS).

The other possible market is the very casual gamer in which case it could very well take over simply because it plays your favorite mobile games, and at a very low price of $99. The question is, why buy a console that already outdated (runs Tegra 3, and Tegra 4 is here) for mobile games that more than likely run better on you 2012 or 2013 smart phone or tablet.

I see sales topping at 10,000,000 max which isn't bad at all, but they need to market it better and get it in the hands of schools, and casuals.

One thing I will say about the Ouya is that it's console cycle will be much smaller than traditional console, because it's basically built on mobile hardware, and worthwhile mobile hardware upgrades happen every 2 - 3 years, so I think we'll see an new Ouya every 3 years, with Tegra 4 being in the next version and a $99 - $149 price, on top of that it'll be able to pump out PSV - PS3 level graphics with it's next iteration, so it may actually be a viable platform then (PS3 should be $99 - $149, and 360 in a similar price range).

I see Ouya being a BOTTOM END PC-MOBILE console.

I don't really care if it does or it doesn't. As long as there are plenty of games for me to play on my PS4, I'll be happily oblivious of the competing consoles.

CGMagazine4020d ago

That's an interesting comment, GribbleGrunger! And in terms of "plenty of games" as you've said, would it matter if they are indie or big-name titles?

GribbleGrunger4020d ago

It's all a matter of taste for me. Most of the time I like to have experiences I can really sink my teeth into, like Okami, which is the game I'm playing at the moment ... and of course I'm waiting on TLOU from ND for that very reason. But there are other times when I just want a shorter experience such as Limbo or Journey. As long as I see value in the game and the pricing reflects the shorter gameplay, I'm up for anything fresh and rewarding.

I DO follow sales and I DO have opinions on those figures, but at the end of the day (and I get bored of saying this), all I'm really concerned with is that the console I chose sells enough units to warrant ongoing support.

Looking at OnLive might answer that question

I had the LaserActive... it was a nice collectors piece but not very practical. Especially when it came to needing recapping. I think i paid all of about $50 for the floor model from an incredible Universe back in the day. I ended up selling it many years later for $300 at the time due to it needing a new laser and the aforementioned recapping.

An honorable mention not on the list would be the VM Labs Nuon. It basically looked like any regular DVD player but it had ports on it for controllers to play specific games. one of which is still exclusive to it with Tempest 3000. It also offered nuon enhanced DVD movies with extra content not accessible by regular players.

How has this article missed out Sega's Dreamcast and Nintendo's Wii U, two consoles that were actually superb devices in their own right, but were seen as failed due to lacklustre sales at the time of release?

Knightofelemia1574d ago

Wonder how long before Stadia appears on the list surprised the Ngage is not on that list

I enjoy these kinds of articles.

Talk about a blast to the past.......I remember trying the virtual boy at Toy R Us and it was cool but I did feel slightly disoriented afterwards......good article.

That's pretty cool they were able to bring it back. It sucks when something online only gets killed.

I got mine when it first launched, however it wasn't good for anything other than retro emulation. I couldn't sell the thing fast enough. Managed to get almost all my money back selling it on eBay.

Just let go homies. It was DOA

JEECE1605d ago

I guess the Stadia launch is bringing back memories of other failed consoles/services.
