Gamers have always wanted to compete with gamers but as there was no options for online gaming early on there was "highest score" gaming and even 16 player "all sharing the joystick" gaming (ie. Return of the Heracles 1981/2). Later came lan gaming till eventually there was online gaming.

World of Tanks, DayZ, Arma 3, Firefall, Planetside 2, Tera Rising, Guild Wars 2, DotA 2, War Thunder, Natural Selection 2, Hawken, etc.

most of the games i play are Online MP and they have become the best ones with 100's of hours of gameplay.

Sure I love a good SP game but 20 hours max and it's over unlike infinite play time of Online MP games with proper support.

70 million people play League of legends and this guys has the nerve to say Online MP isn't gaming. I laugh!

Looks like you didn't read the article my friend. There was no qualitative judgement, but the point is those are exports, not games in the traditional sense. The fact they are no longer traditional games, but exports in their own right is not a criticism in any way.i understand your defensiveness of beloved titles but there is nothing to defend against in this case

My brother and I have two very distinct gaming paths. Starting back when the PS1 existed he obtained a PC. I played my console games and he played his.

Over the years we persuaded each other over to try our games. We came to the conclusion that we were two different types of gamers, fueled by different interests.

For him it was the competition and dominance over another player. Victory, respect, and power were his entertainment.

For me it was the immersion into another world. The ability to step into a character's shoes and live a story through their eyes.

From my point of view there are competitive gamers and noncompetitive gamers out there. Both are games because it allows interaction. However, the type is different.

I would find it more reasonable to say that online gaming is more of a new genre called esport gaming, social gaming, or arena gaming. It is definately not traditional.
