Tomb Raider Sales Millions Less Than Targets

IGN - Plus Hitman, Sleeping Dogs and the other titles that failed to meet the publisher's expectations.

psp2roundup4027d ago

Well, in that case they were stupid targets, the game itself is certainly not to blame. These aren't the PlayStation One days.

dark-hollow4027d ago

it is absolutely stupid target.

after all the mediocre tomb rider previous games did they really expected 5-6 million people to flock for this reboot?
people will cautiously try this game to see if it redeems the series legacy. if it is good, more people would be happy to buy more future sequels to the game. word of mouth and great reviews will push the sales of the sequels if they could maintain the same quality of the first reboot.

imo i think its a fantastic reboot (not prefect but they could improve upon it in the next sequel) and the fanbase either old or new will drastically grow with time.

NewMonday4027d ago (Edited 4027d ago )

any new IP(or reboot) should break even at 1m, and be considered a big hit at 2m. SE should be doing cartwheels at 3.5m sales in 1 month.

Batman: Arkham City was 3m in the first month but almost 8m now so TR could very we hit the 6m target and even more because it is well rated and has good word of mouth.

stupid management is bringing SE down hard, Konami could be the only sane Japanese publisher left.

@ dark-hollow

-I agree with you...

here is what I don't get, how can you expect 5-6 million when you burnt consumers on the older games...

Some of those older tomb raiders sucked, so how do you expect people to come back to the franchise after getting burnt...

That's why I passed on this one, just didn't trust them..

Let this be a Big Lesson to all Game Companies - Making a bad one is not just bad for that game - It's bad for the Franchise.. - It will hurt future sales... Gamers don't just forget how you messed up last time..

So it's great that the reboot is really good, but to get back to 5 -6 million copies you have to stay good... Next one should be even better.

And then you build a crazy following and can expect 5 to 6 million sold.

Hope to see an even more amazing game on PS4 in the future..

Do you know how Square-Enix came up with their sales targets? They looked at Metacritic scores. Metacritic. They aren't the only ones that do so as well. That's why Metacritic needs to go.

miyamoto4026d ago (Edited 4026d ago )

Those are Wada's sales targets...so yeah

Though TR is an excellent game, this is the result of tweaking your game many times and delaying it to be a better Uncharted rip off has its consequences, Wada. Try to be original and creative next time.

if they want cod or gta IV numbers they can close company doors today!!!
end of discussion

shikamaroooo4027d ago

They expected 3.4 million, far from CoD numbers.

NewMonday4027d ago

they got 3.4m, they wanted 5m-6m(and it wasn't christmas even).

chukamachine4027d ago

It was a good game, nothing ground breaking though.

Did not really feel like a tombraider game much either. Just an action title.

The next game needs to be better and involve more exploration etc.

csreynolds4027d ago (Edited 4027d ago )

It's worth noting that this isn't an indication that the game is a failure. It merely illustrates that whomever projected initial sales figures was delusional. The game itself is entirely worth a purchase - in my eyes, anyway.

Batzi4027d ago

5-6 million as a target? really? why that soon? I am sure it will surpass the 5 million mark in the long term but does it have to be all within a month of its launch? That's stupid and many games fail to do the million mark so Square Enix really needs to shut the fuck up!

It's A Crime That There's No Sleeping Dogs 2 Yet

Huzaifah from eXputer: "Sleeping Dogs from the early 2010s is one of the best open-world games out there but in dire need of a resurgence."

LG_Fox_Brazil3d ago

I agree, I consider the first one a cult classic already

isarai3d ago

You say "yet" as if it's even possible anymore. United Front Games is gone, along with anyone that made this game what it is

CrimsonWing692d ago

That’s what happens when games sell poorly. And I’ve seen people wonder why people cry when a game sells badly… this is your answer.

solideagle2d ago

Majority of the time it's true but if a company/publisher is big (in terms of money), they can take a hit or 2. e.g. I am not worried about Rebirth sales as Square will make Remake 3 anyway but if FF 17 doesn't sell then Square might need to look for alternative. <-- my humble opinion

Abnor_Mal2d ago

Doesn’t Microsoft own the IP now since they acquired Activision?

DaReapa2d ago

No. Square Enix owns the IP.

Abnor_Mal2d ago

Oh okay, Activision owned True Crime, but when that didn’t sell as intended it was canceled. Six months later Square Enix bought the rights and changed the title to Sleeping Dogs.*

*As per Wikipedia

boing12d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Sleeping Dogs was a sleeper hit back then. It was fantastic. It actually still is. Would love a sequel to this, or at least a revive of True Crime series.

I do agree that Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness was the worse one 😂 I remember playing some of it and I took it back. That game was just awful in every way. I bought it used at gamestop and glad they had that 7 day return policy for used games 😂

Pyrofire9554d ago

Would it be worth saying why?

ZeekQuattro54d ago

Simple. He's been hating on the Tomb Raider reboots for years. I can't imagine seeing them at the top of a best TR game list let alone being on the list in general sitting well with him because of it.

-Foxtrot54d ago

Zeek

“Hating”

No no, just pointing out how TR mutated into a generic action adventure game losing the appeal of what it once was when it was more about puzzles and platforming over going Rambo, slaughtering waves of enemies

But hey, continue being a dick and speaking about me like I’m not going to see the comment.

MeatyUrologist53d ago

Foxtrot, I'm curious if you have played the most recent games. Sure the 2013 reboot was hugely focused on combat, but each follow up became less and less about combat to the point where outside of a few large scale story missions I don't even remember combat being a part of shadow of the tomb raider. Shadow was so puzzle focused it actually was a bit much for me and I love the TR puzzles.

I still feel like Rise was the best of the series and I was a huge fan of the originals. To me it struck the perfect balance of exploration, platforming, puzzles, and combat. Not saying your opinion is wrong I'm just curious what you think they should have done different. Games do need to evolve somewhat to stay relevant. Would you prefer small linear jumping platform levels like the original?

RavenWolfx54d ago

I would agree Rise for 1 and the reboot as 2. Shadow is a bit high, though.

Sonic188154d ago (Edited 54d ago )

I think Shadow wasn't even develop by crystal dynamics. I thought it was the worse in the new trilogy

Pyrofire9554d ago

That's right. Shadow was developed by Eidos Montreal who who went and made Marvels Guardians of the Galaxy next. (Great game)
Meanwhile after Rise of the Tomb Raider, Crystal Dynamics made Marvels Avengers. (bad game)

MeatyUrologist54d ago

Agrees. First two are correct but Shadow should be around 5-6.

terstomp54d ago

For me, Legend should be alot higher (along with the other two ). Shadow, I enjoyed it, but has too much has fluff, as modern games tend to do. Playing the remastered series, and apart from the controls, is very good.

jznrpg54d ago

I really enjoyed the first 2 games, Legend and the first of the reboots and the rest I didn’t get into so I never finished.

robtion54d ago

Completely subjective list. I really liked Underworld, I preferred Lara's design. That said I loved the horror/uncharted feel of the reboot. I think all the TR games have strengths and weaknesses. None are objectively better in every way.
