PC gaming will dominate the PS4 and Xbox 720, and here's why

Fact is its all about the games. When the new consoles launch, they will have no BC. Meaning their gaming library will be nothing. It will be a rebuild from 0.

On the other hand PC has thousands of games and counting. It also has emulation BC to pretty much every console ever released (except PS3 and Xbox 360).

Hence PC has a significant upper hand in the games department.

User base- Well again consoles will be starting from a user base of 0. PC already has 50million users on Steam alone, never mind all the other networks. Hence i think PC gaming should pretty much dominate. Consoles will have a lot of catching upto do.

Specially can you imagine how empty console MP games will be since many people will take time to upgrade from PS3 and Xbox 360 to the next box. Until they do so and a decent player base is established, console game sales will be low. I think PC should have a very good advantage due to Steam.

Besides all that console gaming just is expensive. I mean 500usd for a Low - mid range locked down PC, thats not upgradable and you need to pay a royalty on every game bought and on a certain case you even need to pay to go online.

I guess it depends on what the author means by "dominate", because what I'm seeing is PC-centric developers flocking to consoles, or at least making their games multiplatform. Additionally, the PC once had a very sizable "casual" crowd (think of the people that made PopCap Games popular, or The Sims, or Roller Coaster Tycoon). Now, the majority of these people play on smartphones and tablets, so the PC continues to lose marketshare.

But wait. The indie scene on PC is thriving. It has thrived for years. However, again we're seeing console companies (Sony especially) making it easier and easier for PC indie devs to put their games on consoles.

I'm not saying gaming PCs are dead or dying. I'm a PC gamer myself and there are a lot of games that I simply won't accept second-best by playing it on a console. However, it's silly to think PCs will "dominate" next-gen consoles when next-gen consoles are going to be closer to PCs than any other time in console history.

I have all of my old consoles. None of my games evaporated when the next gen started. I've gone through several PCs, too, because you can't upgrade the same motherboard forever.

By the time my consoles go bad, there will probably be an emulator for it. And bully for the PC for it. But really old PC games also need emulators to work and other old games need patches to work on modern OSes.

I DL'd Max Payne 1 on Steam not long ago, for example. No problem right? PC has infinite BC with zero issu...wrong, I have to scramble for an unofficial patch to get the audio to work.

Playing old software will ALWAYS require some hassle, PC OR consoles. But neither my PC or console library has evaporated.

It doesn't make any sense for someone writing an article to compare PC gaming as a whole to consoles. Like the OP said, people will flock to consoles because of the high quality exclusive games, and because of Playstation and Xbox Live ecosystems.

If the author wants to write an article that actually makes sense, he should write about how Steam is in a position to rival Playstation or Xbox concurrent users within the Steam ecosystem. At the end of the day, Steam is one of the only reasons that I game on my PC. They've got super awesome deals during their many yearly sales, and they have an ecosystem that is much like the Playstation Network or Xbox Live.

The problem with consoles is that these systems are becoming too PC like from a software point of view. First Sony is abandoning the uniqueness of console architecture by replacing it with the PC gaming architecture (x86). We have to create accounts for consoles now; however, that account ceases to exist at the end of the generation like our psn account or most likely the xbox live account no longer valid for the next xbox or PS4 which leads to our digital library gone (games and movies). What an ignorant comment. Do you know what the most popular games in the world right now? League of Legends. World of Warcraft. Guild Wars. All these games have more active users online than all console games combined. Black Ops 2 (which is primarily the only game I play online) has about 200-400k people online on the PS3 and about 500k on the xbox at its peak. These are the most popular games on either console. Actually there will be more pc gamers. The hardware for pc gaming rigs are at the lowest. Extremely affordable games along with Valve allowing gamers to select the games worthy of being on Steam via steam green light. There are more games than just Peggle on the PC. Every major 3rd party AAA game that is on the console is also available on PC. Not to mention a thousand more RTS's, MMO's and FPS's. Not to mention the million of indie titles and other obscure games that can only be found on the PC.

I am a heavy PC gamer with 2 very high end gaming rigs. One runs a 2500k with SLI 680s and the other runs a 3570K with Crossfire 7970s and I can tell you even with my High End rigs with amazing graphics I find myself playing my PS3 over my gaming rigs and here is why

I swear the word "exclusive" is what some of you think about when you masturbate. So much so that there's no argument to it anymore - you just blindly toss the word "exclusive" out there as if it carries any weight at all.

The PC has plenty of exclusives of its own, with multi plats looking better on it to boot. It will always play FPS and RTS games better than a console will, in terms of controll, and most games in terms of visuals.

The argument for "but it's so much more expensive" goes out the window when you realise most PC gamers are just upgrading when they need to, and not buying entire rigs that cost "thousands".

By the time the Ps4 comes out, you can shell out for a new GPU that will run anything just as well as it, for less. That's if you don't already own one that is already more powerful today.

If you really want to get into pricing, the Steam service just about shits on any digital distribution service available on consoles. That's ignoring the cheaper price tag of any PC game. How many of you own a Ps3/Xbox 360 and were able to buy dozens of games in Summer/Winter/Daily/weekly sales, at 75% off?

The PC version of Bioshock came with XCOM and the original Bioshock for FREE if you pre-ordered it on steam. That's an immense deal.

With all that said, the PC won't dominate the market in terms of sales. Most people will settle for the next best visuals at less cost, hence that's where the market will be focused.

For me, I'll be waiting a while before upgrading my PC again, because as the Ps3 fantards would always say; "developers just havn't been able to get the most out of the hardware yet".

The thing about computer gaming that I do not like are:

- viruses are more prone, especially with Windows platform
- computer games tend to require more than utilizing current specifications
- the keyboard isn't good for all types of games, like fighting

I use a Razer Sabertooth. How do you not know PC games on consoles use game pads is sheer ignorance.
Crysis 3, Metro 2033, dishonored, X-Com, even ARMA series including 3, can be played using my Sabertooth. And then there is my G13 game pad.

LOL some are more mine was, and some are less. This hobby whether it is PC or consoles is no where near cheap. It can be an investment into entertainment, if you are not prepared to commit to that investment, then do not even start it. And like some of the financially limited people, some tend to build their rigs. It sometimes can be cheap if you do not damage the part in installation given a lot of so called builders do not ground themselves. Static electricity kills PC components. I opted to buy from ALienware (here comes the butt hurt people) and I got discounts I never would see on a console. Ex. My insurance company USAA gave me a discount with alienware.
My veteran status gave a discount.
My previous DEll purchases gave a gift card of $300 during my purchase.

Viruses can come from all locations, not just adult content. This goes back to a no unified ecosystem for computer gaming, a person can send me an email that could contain a virus and they might not even know it.

First of all the whole game is downloaded instead of being on the disk, on top of that computer games are not as utilized as console gaming. Console gaming have lower specs but are utilizing hardware in better ways than computer gaming. When a new game comes out, the specs in the computer that cost you over $3,000 can be outdated when you want to play the way they it is meant to be played. Now with the PS4 using Sony`s API`s that are given to developers using heterogeneous architecture using advancements that are in computer gaming now in console gaming.

- Adding a peripheral would defeat the purpose of playing on a computer, because consoles can easily support a keyboard and mouse. This argument neutralizes both hardware from an input device perspective.

This argument is due to the fact that a top of the line console is generally under $1,000 while the top of the line computer is over $3,000 and can be outdated really fast. So I can get the top of the line console and still be up to date with the games coming out for the console.

This isn`t about what games are available it`s more on the ecosystem on the computer for video games. Steam would be the first kind of unification of video games on the computer otherwise each computer game is completely independent from one another. This is like having cross game chat on Xbox Live with each game on the xbox 360.

Another thing I would like to add:

- computer gaming, the cheating is easier than any other platform. This would include aim bots, aim assists, or some wall seeing aid. As appose to console gaming, if it happens with console gaming it`s because of design not hacks. If it happens that hacks are used on a console, they have eliminated amatures and only the dedicated would feel a need to do such a thing.

First point: They lol at the people that says "but pc gamers need to upgrade video cards every 6 months or at least every year", and yet they talk of playing the latest games in ultra, and all the graphics things on, yet u cant do that and get a decent framerate without upgrading..

Second point is, u keep talking of 700-1000$ computers, everyone in this site knows that 700-1000 computers wont outdo the new consoles, and prolly in 1,2 years those comps wont be able to run the next games in medium setting with decent frames..

Third point: u talk of no need to upgrade, yet u guys tell ps4 video card its mid range, and in 6 months will be low range.. then its 6 months needed or not to change video cards according to u guys?.. double standars i see right here.

I love my pc, i expend a lot on em #have 5# but i love my console too, and i like more to play on console for the exclusives it has, and the easy to use.

I find it interesting how after the PS3 and 360 came out we saw articles on the death of computers and PC gaming. How tablets would take over computers and so on. Now it's coming back with OPC dominating gaming? I'll always game on PC but also on Consoles for what each offer. Certain games I prefer on PC and certain on Console. I'm a gamer, I love games and lots of them!

Yeh okey on my PC i can play and see the graphics crystal clear and all but it will never give me them moments i had with my Playstation... exclusives, gameplay, storyline and stunning visuals even if they are not on a high end PC scale but you can still say "God Damn this looks beautiful :o "

I constantly debate going PC but buying console guarantees that in 5 years ill be playing games that a 5 year old PC couldnt without upgrading.

Also, it's unlikely that you'll be able to build a PC as powerful as PS4 for the same price if your"re like me and starting from scratch (Windows 7 alone cost 90 bucks). With a console you get the benefit of economies of scale and prices less than or equal to manufacturing costs.

i feel like i've just had a visit from a sales man who had pc gaming for sale.
He's basicaly said nothing that has allready been said before, the four main advantages that he's pointed out were:

..cheaper games
you might save some money if you buy lots of games, if you dont buy alot, it's not cheaper.
..can't play old games on consoles
if your keeping the games why can't you keep the console?
..games look better
yess but you do not get your moneys worth, devs do not optimise games for your PC and the operating system (the anoying middle man who wont move out of the way) will slow everything down.
..you can easily upgrade a PC
i have a gaming PC that cost me £1000 in 2008, its ok today but i don't use it for games, i play on a console.

If i wanted to upgrade to the latest graphics card so i could play bf3 on ultra settings i would also have to buy a new power supply because the new card would need more power - upgrade my cpu because my current cpu would hold the new graphics card back - if i get a new cpu i would have to get a new motherboard becuse my current motherboard would not support the new one, easy? no and the graphics card alone could cost more than a new console.

i prefer consoles because they are designed to play games, pcs are not, i do not play on a PC because of the constant stress a pc brings with it (if you own a pc you should know what i'm talking about) and when people compare mouse/keyboard to a controller they never talk about how uncomfortable it is to use a keyboard, the mouse is better than a stick but a stick is also better than the wasd keys.
