Alienware X51 featuring LINUX(Ubuntu) Released

The Ubuntu flavor of Linux has received a major endorsement from Dell with its announcement that it will offer the OS as an option for its Alienware X51 gaming rig.

Mariusmssj4036d ago

This is quite interesting. The more competition the better and it allows people to have more options when buying a pre-built system

thecurseddevil4036d ago

yup, actually left 4 dead 2 on linux performed better than the windows version
linux gave 315 fps
windows gave 303.4 fps on the same conf.

"

After this work, Left 4 Dead 2 is running at 315 FPS on Linux. That the Linux version runs faster than the Windows version (270.6) seems a little counter-intuitive, given the greater amount of time we have spent on the Windows version. However, it does speak to the underlying efficiency of the kernel and OpenGL. Interestingly, in the process of working with hardware vendors we also sped up the OpenGL implementation on Windows. Left 4 Dead 2 is now running at 303.4 FPS with that configuration.

And what's more interesting is that SteamBox will be running Linux(Ubuntu) as well.

I guess the one of the reasons why Windows got so popular is because it was the Core OS to play games on.

gognos4030d ago (Edited 4030d ago )

I agree its good to give more options. Its not that its hard to install Ubuntu on any system you own/build/buy though. You are also incorrect about the steam box. Yes,valves "higher spec" version will be running on the Linux kernel, whilst other non valve manufactured boxes may contain windows or Linux .However, valves version wont come with Ubuntu, instead it will simply boot straight into steam big picture mode with no DE overhead.

What valve/steam/source engine does currently on GNU/linux,which includes more than ubuntu, is bring a non-deferring, locally-optimizing abstraction layer in their source engine that converts Direct3D calls into OpenGL. However, it's not the same way that Wine does Direct3D to OpenGL conversion. The Source Engine targets a D3D9-like API with extensions that translates GL calls dynamically. This also works for Shader Model 2.0b with Shader Model 3.0 support coming soon. Valve's implementation is nearly a 1:1 mapping between D3D and GL concepts.

What valve may bring to the table with the new steam box is likely a new source engine that's either OpenGL encouraging better native cross platform games.Or includes an updated D3D to Opengl translation layer that includes D3D10/11 support not just D3D9. Who knows but if its popular more games will either get ported or made for Linux. A win for the Linux gaming community

SilentNegotiator4036d ago

I hope Valve can help bring Linux to a level of being decent competition to Windows as a gaming platform. That veritable monopoly needs to end.

NameRemoved00174036d ago

Valve will definitely help bring Linux to gaming but, what about all those games that are on windows? I doubt many of them will get ports so you will have to dual boot to play older titles.

CyberCam4036d ago

Or use one of the many wine GUI's, like many I know do.

DeadlyFire4035d ago (Edited 4035d ago )

Probably, but many games will transition over to Linux if its popular enough.

Microsoft has no core PC exclusives to hold consumers to Windows really. Just one or two. Everyone else is free to roam to any OS. Microsoft has already proven it can't build an online service for the PC platform so its not winning over many gamers.

WUTCHUGUNNADO4034d ago (Edited 4034d ago )

Deadly fire... it's not that Microsoft can't make a nice working online platform on PC... it's the fact that they can't profit from it like they do on 360 so they didn't bother. As soon as linux becomes relevant to games then I'll switch completely.

DX11 is all microsoft has.

Sorry to hurt your Nintendo blind fan feelings ,but Nintendo actually stole the Switch's design from the Wikipad and other Handhelds and Android controller grips.

It’s far from a Switch killer. People will always buy Nintendo based on brand loyalty and for their amazing exclusives.

indysurfn1570d ago

I agree!
"super premium" is not tech specs. They have no exclusive games they are going to have to at least have SUPER TECH! And they will still not touch SWITCH.

1570d ago
CaptainHenry9161570d ago

I feel that way with Nintendo and Sony

Kribwalker1570d ago

except when they get that switch emulator running on it. Then that thing could be wicked

spicelicka1570d ago

It would make it better than the Switch, but people still wouldn't buy it as much as the switch simply because of brand power and convenience.

2pacalypsenow1570d ago (Edited 1570d ago )

Exclusives which you can play on PC with an emulator. Js

Shiken1570d ago

One, you still have to buy the game to play it legally on an emulator...and you have to rip the game yourself.

Two, there is no Switch emulator at this point in time...JS

King_Noctis1570d ago

And you think this little thing have enough juice to fully emulate a Switch game?

Maybe you should wake up.

2pacalypsenow1570d ago

I don’t know it’s not out yet.

King_Noctis1570d ago (Edited 1570d ago )

“ I don’t know it’s not out yet.”

Why do you need to wait until it is out in order to realize that if a big desktop-sized PC struggle to emulate the Switch, then how can a tablet-sized PC like this one able to achieve that?

CosmicTurtle1569d ago

There is a Switch emulator called Yuzu.

Shiken1569d ago

@comic

Yuzu is experimental and most games either will not boot, or they run like garbage. Why even bother naming it when it runs would run worse than supporting the devs for their hard work?

Sounds like you are just looking for ways to claim you do not need a Switch to play major Switch games...but a quick google search will just out you quicker than you can type a response.

2pacalypsenow1569d ago

@Shiken

Actually majority of the switch’s mayor games are playable on the Wii U.

Shiken1566d ago (Edited 1566d ago )

@2pacalypsenow

That is false. I assure you that games like Mario Odyssey, Link's Awakening remake, Luigi's Mansion 3, Fire Emblem Three Houses, Astral Chain, Pokemon Sw/Sh, Smash Ultimate, BotW2 (coming soon), Splatoon 2, Xenonlade 2, Xenoblade Torna, etc etc etc are not playable on WiiU.

Just because the WiiU has lost its value to most of their under appreciated games getting a second chance on Switch, that does not mean that Switch is not still pumping out its own exclusives at an even greater number as well.

But like I said...downplay...and we all know you do a lot of it lol.

bujasem_891570d ago

Dare I say... Emulation? If I own it, why can't I play it in any form I like?

Shiken1566d ago

Because there is no reliable Switch emulator at this time.

m2stech1570d ago

How about Yuzu switch emulator installed on it?

+ Show (3) more repliesLast reply 1566d ago
aarogree1570d ago

Calling it a Switch rival would be more accurate.

1570d ago
isarai1570d ago

"Switch Killer" lol

People buy the switch for Nintendo's exclusives, so unless they can suddenly hault Nintendo from making games it's really not even gonna affect the Switch in the least. That said the product does look dope an i'd love to get one for emulation aswell as PC games.

Bhuahahaha1570d ago

lol when someone says its a "(insert game/device) killer" it will always end in failure

Vits1570d ago

That is what I call a sensationalist title.

The UFO is not even a real product, let alone a Switch killer.... It's just a concept, one of many that Dell has brought to the CES 2020. It might eventually go into production if they find a market for it. But as many other concepts it might as well just stay a concept.
