Source: Sony Planning Big PS4 Reveal Before E3

Expect a big announcement from Sony about its next-gen PlayStation 4 console this month or possibly in early May, a source familiar with the company's marketing strategy told PCMag this week.
Sony already revealed some PlayStation 4 specs at a February event in which the company unveiled the console's controller (pictured) and a stereo camera with motion capture capabilities, but not, to the chagrin of gamers everywhere, the PS4 itself.

But early May is when the Xbox is supposed to be revealed, damn Sony are really starting to try and knock MS off. This would mean that MS are revealing the Xbox in May and Sony are trying to eliminate the thought of it by showing more.

So Sony are going to make another event, so they are showing what the PS4 will look like and more games and a more specific launch date, price, etc. but what about E3???

i cant wait for more info about the ps4. despite what others think about e3 being important for reveals, i dont really care much for an imaginary contest about winning e3 because no matter what im sure sony will have new info and games to show there. history proves that when it comes to exclusive titles and big game reveals that sony does it the most. im quite sure that sony will have the most interesting exclusive titles to be shown at e3 and the whole year.

Sure, they'll still continue to release a Halo game and a Forza game once in a while, but Microsoft has seen their best days come and go in the gaming industry. Heck, the WiiU deserves to better than the Xbox 720 since Nintendo actually puts some real effort into making a console for hardcore gamers.

In the past few E3's Sony has so much to show that can't fit within the time frame of an E3 press conference. They have shown new games prior to the show which makes you wonder how big Sony's E3 conference is gonna be.

This could potentially be the biggest Sony E3 press conference since 1995 when they first released the PSone.

A man would remind everyone that ND has a team that's been working on something for 2 years and that MM is in the same situation. Infamous gameplay (without fancy camera angles) will also get a spot in the conference most likely. Don't forget they may reveal a new PS3 game or 2 and announce a pricecut. A man predicts a 2 hour conference even if this event is true as he expects PS3 and Vita to both get price cuts after new games are shown for each.

over the last few years sony has used the month or so before E3 to announce a lot of games than show them at E3, some don't like that since there are not many big reveals at E3 as world exclusive surprises

but i think its smart to announce stuff beforehand for 2 reason:

1. you get the whole media attention instead of split during big events

2.amount of studios sony own and the 2nd party contracts would make it impossible to show everything within 2 or so hours at E3's conference

so i am sure spike TV GTTV will have few world exclusives, i think its smart maybe to show all the titles for ps3 and Vita and hold on to all the announcements of PS4 till E3

Most of the MS headlines are how they aren't doing anything, the rest are rumors which aren't very positive, and then most are going on to say that the PS4 will dominate it regardless, which is speculation at this point. All of them are pretty much useless, but I guess it does get us talking about it.

I read it here in one of his interviews. He was interview after the PS4 announcement and was asked why Sony didn't show the actual hardware.

He said there were some features they didn't want to show in advance. There are rumors that it is actually a port that will allow for hardware upgrade of some kind. Not sure. But i do remember reading it here on N4G.

Great looking exclusives along with lots of third-party support are what steal thunder. Remember the FFXIII multi-platform announcement? Or the Portal 2 announcement? Or how Mass Effect was sore point for half the console gamers for some time.. Those are the kind of things that really rile up the gamers. The hardware reveal is simply to keep Microsoft from singly gaining traction.

Sony wants to prevent the Xbox from being the only thing talked about. Revealing their console around the Microsoft event ensures that any news about the next Xbox will also be news about the PS4.

If they can do this reveal, then that means their confident about E3. Confidence in the past few years for Sony has been about showcasing games - and that is the most important thing.

Talk about the system/the specs and reveal more of its features now, then talk about games and services at E3. plus, it could even give them some time to talk about the Vita and its interpolarity with the PS4.

Definitely. Even if they were able to condense all the information into the E3 conference, that would most likely dilute the impact. Ironically, dispersing the information over a several events helps build the hype as it makes the system sound like it is constantly improving when in reality they probably had all this set up back in February.

This approach of spreading the announcements helps Sony highlight many developers who are helping the PS4 happen. We saw a few big names at the the PS4 announcements and many indies at GDC. E3 will probably highlight more third-parties along with some of Sony's heavy hitters. Finally, we have TGS in October showing us what Japan has been cooking. This should make everyone happy.

Generally MS goes first, followed by Sony and then Nintendo. With others like EA and Ubisoft in between.

Each get around 1:30 hours to present info live.
Of course more info is brought out before and after the conferences it is just not all broadcasted. (Followup interviews and such) :-)

The Playstation, to this day is the' gaming computer for the matured video game player.
Its a machine that gets a personal space under the TV for all to see, including the girlfriend.

Sony packs style, suport and image that resonates with 200 million gamers from the day that they bought their first console, the playstation 1.
These people are now 20/30/40 years old, and don't like to play a color full bunny jumo power ranger shooter as in Halo.

Sony is doing a great job building up hype around this system.. They havent even shown what the box looks like yet & it has ppl drooling.. Very smart move imo.. If they counter MS reveal by showing what the console looks like, more games, features, pricing, release date, etc, it will make ppl forget MS even has something to show.. Good job

I could completely see them doing this. Since MS is expected to show off the nextBox around this time, they'll pretty much continue the PS4 hype train in an attempt to drown out the competition. Very aggressive and smart move by Sony.

I could see this event fully showing off the console hardware (finally), price, release date, and launch titles. Then when E3 rolls around, they can drag the hype train on even longer with playable gameplay demos and teasers for titles coming out between 2014-2015 and a bit of time for PS3 and Vita.

Seems like Sony is holding nothing back with this launch.

I just want a PS4 NOW dammit. PS4 with Watch Dogs, infamous, Killzone & maybe a new UFC or Fight Night or both, would do me for a month or 2.
Although, I started seriously playing Bioshock Infinate last night.......and damn, that game, although pretty, just proves how much more developers could be doing with genres, than they are & are happy to shove down our necks.
Irrational Games have outdone themselves this time, as the new Bioshock is far better a game than the original (as it should be).

I really must say though, the wait has been long enough, my Wii-U is a nothing console, not even powerful enough to keep up with PS3 & 360, & even if it is, it's not really, as it is failing to attract the awesome games, & by the time Mario 3D comes out, & the usual Nintendo fanboys go gaga over it, I will be salivating over the realistic prospect of playing these PS4 games I mentioned above, plus more, & Mario 3D & those couple of other Wii-U titles I wished were out now, will be buried by the visuals offered on PS4 & 720's launch titles.

Sony are for once on the ball with their PS4 strategy. They stole a massive advantage with their early announcement that caught everyone off guard.

We know the PS4 specs.
We know the PS4 controller.
We see the PS4 tech demos.

Did Microsoft get spooked? Their silence suggests they don't have the hardware fire power to compete so are trying to package their media integration suite together in response.

Gotta give Sony credit for doing what almost nobody except Google and Apple have been able to do..

C'Mon MS. Give all your loyal fans something to look forward to.

This is smart. Leaves E3 exclusively only for the games. If MS reveal both console and games at E3 they will be limited to what they can show off and since both consoles are going to be launched this year, its beneficial to show off all you can before putting it on store shelves. Though i hope MS follow suit with their own reveal before E3. Good times for us gamers.

Show it at the event before E3, then release it THE DAY OF E3, (or day after).....that'd f$#k em'.

But seriously, the event before E3, really only has to show the machine & maybe some more tech demo's (akin to 8 Days & the buzz that non-existent game stirred).

Then at E3, announce a September release for Jpn & the U.S, then give Europeans & Australians the chance to buff up huge sales numbers before Xmas, by giving us a Nov 2013 release date. I mean, barring a WORLDWIDE launch at the same time, I think a Nov-Dec European/Aus/NZ release date would definitely make us feel less like leppers that get thought about by Sony Japan last.
I mean, Europe & other PAL territories are massive Sony PS consumers, & eclipse Nth American sales, due to the bigger population, & definitely the higher Playstation attach rate we seem to have, we just love PS machines more than the Americans, so really, we deserve a unified release, & if not, we deserve new Sony PS hardware BEFORE N.A.

Anyway, if E3 gave me that alone I would soil my mothers pantyhose (there comfy, alright), but with the more certain announcement of new games, & showing of updated, further along already shown games, I would certainly be in heaven.

I mean, I'm from Aus. & I have to say, & would love to get my hands on a PS4 before this Xmas, & I would be buying this for sure:

And a couple of others, if the quality was of the aboves ilk & pedigree. I mean, I have seen jack sh1t on all these games really, the most being the gameplay from Killzone, but I really don't question Evolution, Sucker Punch, Guerilla & Ubisofts quality. I mean, Ubisoft maybe, if they attach Tom Clancy's name on it.
I just can't wait, & want my PS4 at the same time, or a mere month or 2 apart from the U.S. & Jpn.

I know this may sound crazy. But I heard from sony people at a store location in nyc who have attended the ps4 reveal . They said the ps4 resembles a cylinder shaped system. They said it its basically looks like a black and blue desktop but shaped into a cylinder it has more than 4 usb components with 1 of them being usb 2.0. Its got memory stick slot. It can play blue rays no dvd. Built in wifi. It has a built in tv tuner for fios with built in dvr not sure how many gigs. It has a future use too for projection tv so you can project off the wall.

I really hope they announce some more interesting titles, most of the ones they showcased in the first presentation/reveal were a bit boring. Not to bash the actual story oriented games, I really liked them, but the whole Killzone approach just seemed like a poorly written michael bay movie IMO.
