Julian Gollop: “XCOM is like a phoenix rising from the ashes”

The original creator of X-COM: Enemy Unknown seems quite taken with Firaxis’ reboot, and credits it for breathing life back into turned based strategy.

I got it free with my Bioshock Infinite preorder and i love it, im 45 hours in and at the last stage now. If they make another game i will buy it day 1 combination of rpg and rts is what i love.

Robotronfiend4040d ago

Except for your damn game-crashing chamber Mr. Gollop. I hated the freezes requiring a hard reset ever other battle after building the Gollop Chamber. Haven't played in a while, did they fix that yet?

grifter0244040d ago

I was playing Hitman: Absolution before I started playing Xcom:Enemy Unknown. After the first mission I was hooked and beat the game before I even touched Hitman:Absolution again.

Really enjoyed the game, except when the A.I cheated and was right on top of you in 2 moves (rescue missions)

Perjoss4040d ago (Edited 4040d ago )

I totally loved what they did with this resurrection of the X-COM brand. But 1 thing that really bugged me was how the first 2 months of each game were by far the hardest, once you get past those first couple of months the game gets much easier. Would have been nicer to have a stable difficulty throughout or one that gets slowly, slightly harder towards the end.

grailly4040d ago

kinda bullshit that the whole article was pulled from a rev3 video and they didn't put the video in the article.

Lokai4039d ago

I want to agree, but they did link it in there in the first paragraph, which does give the reader the option to immediately stop reading the article and go watch the video instead.

grailly4039d ago

yeah I saw that, but I think they should have embedded the video.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown - A Welcome Rebirth

XCOM: Enemy Unknown rebooted the series back in 2012, and has since inspired numerous new strategy game series to be born.

shinoff2183179d ago (Edited 179d ago )

If someone gets into this I'd recommend getting the enemy within version. It's got all the dlc included so it's the better version. Wish the author would've atleast mentioned it. I didn't see it.

Fantastic game though. Xcom 2 is top notch also. I've spent countless hours in these games.

ModsDoBetter179d ago

Excellent game.
Played to death on PS3 years ago.

S2Killinit178d ago

What other games were inspired by this game?

JL2930178d ago

Gears Of War Tactics, Phoenix Point. Many others.

shinoff2183178d ago

Phoenix point if I remember was created by the original xcom developer or something to that affect. I did try gears tactics some months ago and I just couldn't get into it. It's probably just me

JL2930177d ago (Edited 177d ago )

It was, but it was really closer to the newer XCOM than the older ones. Gears Tactics was okay but was hard to get into knowing there probably wont be a sequel.

Honestly game was a real pleasant surpise. I dont even like marvel like that, but I loved the gameplay. Really fun and addicting, sad to see the game just didnt do well.

SurgicalMenace363d ago

Yeah over 100 hours of play from me and I enjoyed every minute. Hope it gets the support that it deserves.

CrimsonWing69363d ago

I really loved it. It sucks it didn’t do well.

I actually want a sequel badly.

MasterChief3624363d ago

Did it inspire you to get more into Marvel at all? I know when I played Ultimate Alliance 3, I wasn't that into Marvel, but I enjoyed the heck out of it. I enjoyed it so much that I ended up seeking out lots of Marvel comics that the movies didn't touch on much yet! I was wondering if something similar happened for you after playing and falling in love with this one?

shinoff2183363d ago

I'm still looking forward to it. I have yet to buy I but I do plan to. I'm a huge xcom fan and I feel this will hit the spot. Card base battles is a bit of a turn off but I feel they could pull it off.

hotnickles363d ago

It was great until the DLC trophies bugged out and they never fixed it. I beat the game twice and then they wanted me to beat it another 4 times for the dlc trophies. That was pretty lame and I moved on.

shinoff2183363d ago

Maybe I should wait till dlc is done then lol. Damn

hotnickles363d ago

Yeah it’s a great game though it’s just that one issue. The dlc characters are thrown in the middle of the story and if you have already beat the game the trophies won’t unlock. You have start a new game for each dlc character lol. That’s not fun after you spend a ton of time building your decks.

The price tanked like 2 months after launch. It was bad. Wait for the last dlc and then get the complete version for 20 bucks. I recommend it. I will probably play it again someday with all of the dlc.

InUrFoxHole363d ago

Waiting for the right sales price for this one.

Bigninja363d ago

Imagine X-Com 2, with Marvel characters and powers.

Yeah, would have rather had that

I hope it kinda stays the same. Maybe develop for consoles simultaneously with PC. Please also port the xcom chimera to consoles. I've seen people be down on it but I just want more xcom.
