Unreal Engine 4: prepare yourselves for next-gen

Epic Games showed off its gorgeous Unreal Engine 4 during GDC. VG247′s technologically inept Stephany Nunneley witnessed and felt the hotness in the standing-room only mini-theater.

" I am probably not the best person to send to engine tech demos, as you probably gleaned from my FOX Engine and Battlefield 4/Frostbite 3 reports. It’s hard enough for me to program my DVR, let alone understand what’s going on with shaders, Javascript, HTML, or WebGL. The only thing I know about C++ is that it’s used to run some of my games – and I only know this because I see listed in the program files on my PC’s control panel."

I am ready :D c'mon E3 hurry the hell up!!

It looks great!

STILL; I'm excited to see if the next generation will turn out like this generation; I think we can agree that Unreal Engine 3 did not end up as the best looking engine for PS3/Xbox 360.
Which kind of excites me ^^

Yes and no. Gears 3 is still one of the best looking games this gen, or Judgment, so the improvements made during this gen allowed it to stay at the top with the best engines (on console).

Naturally, some of the ugliest games were also made by the UE3. It is more down to the developer I suppose.

Yes, Gears 3 looks very good. But do you REALLY mean that it is on pair with Crysis 2, Uncharted 2/3, Battlefield 3 or The Last of Us and Beyond: Two souls?

It definitely looks great. One of the best? hmm..
it's just got that "oh this is obviously a UE3 game"-feel to it..maybe that ruins it for me.

I hope we won't see that so clearly with UE4.

LackTrue4K4033d ago

Hope they make a new Unreal Tournament!!! Love that game, it's just simple fun matches. :D

Im more excited to see naughty dog or santa monica's engine for the ps4. They just seem to know how to push the system further with their own engine.

Edit: Its good to see Unreal Engine 4 will be used by alot of 3rd party devs.

DigitalSmoke4033d ago (Edited 4033d ago )

I agree, Unreal engine games have always looked mediocre mid console cycle.
And if this is what mediocrity will look like next generation, I'm holding my seat to what Naughty Dog, Geurilla and SA will do for sure.

AllroundGamer4033d ago

hopefully no texture popups like with UE3...

Fishy Fingers4033d ago (Edited 4033d ago )

With 16x the memory (and better memory at that) it shouldn't be such an issue. PS4 anyway.

DeadlyFire4033d ago

Of course it is. It upgrades every year, but consoles released this year will be able to do anything from 2012 or 2013 on PC at high settings. This tech demo is only the begining of what next wave of PC games will look like. This is the potential max of what next gen console games can look like. PC can scale past 3 Tflops to 6 Tflops and beyond in 2013-2015.

PS4 is aiming its bandwidth as high as NVIDIA 680 for its setup as well as using HLSL and other things to get the code closer to running directly off the hardware for faster frames. So there is alot of potential there for games to scale up to something very similar to UE4's tech demo on the system.

Fans??? This is done by one person

WoodsRatesGames1078d ago

Someone else was commissioned to do the music and another person modelled the batmobile. Links to all involved are included in the article.

Gaming4Life19811079d ago

They should have been made a batman game for the best batman movie. This looks amazing and now I must watch the movie.

Am I crazy or is there an Unreal Engine 5 now? Why promote old tech?

waverider1099d ago

I really dont understand either? isnt the Unreal Engine 5 already available for studios? arent they already working with it?

masterfox1099d ago

UE5 Is for PS5 only, deal with it! :D

***runs away from this thread with pride!**

Tacoboto1099d ago

UE5 is not released yet and developers for years will still make UE4 games because that's where their tools and customizations are.

Mortal Kombat still uses UE3. Mass Effect Legendary Edition is also still UE3.

Magog1099d ago

That more of an embarrassing indictment of those devs than a reason to promote old software.

Tacoboto1099d ago

Embarrassing indictment? You know nothing of software development then.

Spenok1099d ago (Edited 1099d ago )

Because a ridiculous amount of the industry still uses 4, and because no, 5 is not out yet. They said it would launch later this year.

AuraAbjure1099d ago

Companies still use Unreal Engine 3.

Really impressive tech but I don’t even notice all of these benefits in real life, never mind being chased by zombies in a video game. Rather devote resources to resolution and frame rate.

Magog1099d ago

If you suddenly stopped casting reflections in a mirror I think you would notice.

Yes after seeing the Unreal 5 ps5 reveal, I thought that's where we were heading. But saying that I have read various articles that suggest its easy for developers to still work on Unreal 4 and carry everything over to Unreal 5 when needed, we shall see.
