God of War vs. Gears of War - You Decide

IGN - Welcome to Versus, a video series where we'll be pitting two games against each other before letting you decide who the winner is.

We know you've spent countless hours trolling comments sections, defending the honor of your favorite franchise. Flamewar face-offs are the ultimate indulgence for passionate gamers, so don't by shy. This episode features Sony's God of War and Microsoft's Gears of War. We'll be looking at three categories in this episode -- Gore, Character, and the Series. The winner in each is decided based on your votes. Voting will close Friday, April 5th at Midnight PT.

You can say the exact same thing about GOW. In fact More GOW games have been released than Gears of War games.

Nonetheless the comparison is pointless, God Of War is a hack and slash, Gears of War is a shooter. There to entirely different games that have nothing in common other than the same acronym.

Actually no you can't. God of war is on 3 different platforms, Gears is on 1.

God of War is a far better series. I've owned Gears 1 & 2 since last spring and I haven't found them interesting enough to finish, but I'm going to try to force myself to finish them soon mainly just for the achievements.

How is it justifiable to label a game as uninteresting, when playing it 6 years after its release? Also, I find it somewhat odd that you would start Gears of War 2's campaign, after:
1) Not completing the preceding game.
2) After finding the preceding game uninteresting.

I've enjoyed both series but I'm going to show gears some love, absolutely perfect gameplay in co op. just wish they'd gone in a slightly different direction with the story and characters, more like the very first mad world trailer.

Chainsawing someone in half still has to be one of the most satisfying ways to kill another player online this gen though.

Well, I like both for different reasons. There have been hits and misses in both series for me.
I loved Gears 1, hated Gears 2, and liked Gears 3. Haven't played Judgment.
I disliked God of War 1, like God 2, like CoO, like GoS, and really like God of War 3. Haven't played Ascension.

God of War 1 and Gears 2 were low points for me but I feel every other game has been fairly good.

Different genres but more similar than you'd think.

Both are seen as the best looking games on the respective consoles (until Crysis 2 came along on Xbox)

Both sport brutal gorey kills

Both spawned a bunch of cloans

Both went one game too many.

Anyway, choosing too games in different genres seems like a cop out. Should have went with UC vs Gears

One game too many, imo not even true for Gears although it only has been one and a half years since 3 and 4 games in one gen, 4 great games, but definitely not true for Kratos. 2 games per generation, last one 3 was years ago. Imo Ascension is as good as part 3, and it looks even better.

And I can handle 2 more on PS4. GoW3 left space for GoW4 wherever it may be and I wouldn't mind another prequel starting as a captain in the Spartan army, the battle with the Barbarians, receiving the blades.

Ending the franchise with the thing that started it, us killing our own family. I don't think SSM will let us do that, not the endboss we want but it would be fitting.

To confirm this you should have a new user choose God of War and another new user choose Gears of War. It would be a silly test but it may give some indication.

I'm not a big fan of either franchise but I'd probably choose God of War.

Gore- god of war. Short of using the chainsaw to hackup locusts not much there. Storyline- I wouldn't choose one over the other because for me they're both phenomenal in their own way and equally awesome. Characters- gearsofwar had more diversity not just in race but personality as well. Everyone in god of war was angry or hurt. Gears had angry, hurt, happy, sad, and cole gleefully runnin around being cole gave me some laugh out loud moments. I also developed more of an emotional bond with the characters imin gears. Doms wife! Nuff said

I love them both. I bought a 360 just for Gears. God of War is and always will be my favorite series. One thing I will say though is I will buy a PS4 knowing that God of War 4 is coming. With Xbox Live costs seemingly increasing steadily, I can't say I will buy the Nextbox just for Gears of War 4.

That is a really bad couple of games to try and compare, but I'd pick Gears Of War because its basically defined a generation of third person shooters. We've seen everything from Mass Effect to Dead Space adopt a Gears approach to TPS.

Also, Gears invented Horde Mode, which is all the rage these days. I also have to point out that Gears was the reason I bought a 360, it was the first "next gen" game in my eyes, never seen anything like it before.

I'm not saying God of War is a saint either, but Gears just went too downhill, moreso than God of War.

Not sure how Gears went down hill, the new Gears was probably the hardest campaign of the bunch, and Overrun Mode is probably my favorite since the original Horde Mode.

I loved Mass Effect 3 and Dead Space 3, I also noticed that other games took the cover based aspects, even games like Uncharted online, so not only do I think Gears is the better game, but it's the more genre defining game.
