The ten best console JRPGs this gen

Digitally Downloaded writes: "Some people (who weren't looking that hard) have claimed that the JRPG genre has been floundering this generation, lacking both in quality and quantity.

They're wrong. Though it can be argued that the genre's biggest franchises (Final Fantasy) has lost its way, a little digging beneath the surface reveals a wealth of great games that are equal to, if not better, than the best JRPGs from years past."

My favourite would be Lost Odyssey...it was the real Final Fantasy 13 game for me. Good characters, good voice acting, the music was amazing, the theme music was better, the battle system was good (can't beat turn based). I could go on...

Plus Jansen was hilarious...one of the best characters in a JRPG for me

Nate-Dog4042d ago (Edited 4042d ago )

I loved Lost Odyssey but really didn't like Jansen at all. Just too much of a forced attempt at humour with almost every single line.

Also this list is missing Tales of Vesperia!

Root4042d ago (Edited 4042d ago )

I know where your coming from but for a JRPG game he was pretty good in my opinion and I mean a JPRG where they have voice actors. Most games have came off cheesy when it comes to voice acting, look at Blue Dragon or even Cooke and Mac in Lost Odyssey but Jansen was pretty funny with the game being pretty serious at times.

His relationship with Ming as well was nice to watch as well, he kind of changed because of it through out the game.

SOD_Delta4042d ago (Edited 4042d ago )

Lost Odyssey was indeed a great game. It deserves a top spot. But They put Star Ocean over Tales of Vesperia/ or Graces? Also no Valkyria Chronicles? I know it's a (J)SRPG, But that still counts right?

Blue Dragon is also a good JRPG. I'd put it above Star Ocean (IMO)

EDIT: @ dedicatedtogamers I can't believe I forgot about that game. Yes, Resonance of Fate was AWESOME. I loved that game. I lose gamer cred. for not mentioning RoF.

Lykon4041d ago

I've never played a jrpg ...i'm scared of them because i think they might be hard , difficult and complicated..but the weirdness appeals to me .. weird penguins ..schoool children that fight monsters or win a lottery and become god . I like weirdness because i am weird and silly in my head . so what would be a weird silly fun jrpg for me to start with that is not too scarily hard and frustrating? btw im not a bad person ..my bubbles were taken because im weird and silly not because im horrible. you have to be really intelligent and talk about data buses and stuff to get bubbles . I dont understand any of that.

dedicatedtogamers4042d ago

No mention of Resonance of Fate is a fail. That game can easily go toe-to-toe with any of the games on that list. It had the combat that Final Fantasy 13 SHOULD have gotten.

MattS4042d ago

I love how people immediately act as though any personal preference list is 'wrong' just because it doesn't include their favourite game.

I am sorry that my tastes don't match with yours, oh supreme arbiter of game quality. ;-)

dedicatedtogamers4042d ago

Okay, then let me explain why I mentioned Resonance of Fate:

Several games on the list are niche. Nothing wrong with that, but not everyone likes the Atelier series. Not everyone likes Hyperdimension. Not everyone likes Star Ocean.

Granted, not everyone likes RoF either, but RoF suffered from having no marketing. SEGA just dropped it on store shelves and forgot it existed. Unlike a lot of the games you mentioned, RoF actually did some NEW things for the JRPG genre. Additionally, it wasn't a painfully supah-kawaiiiii anime-inspired game. It was a quirky action-JRPG that reminded me of the PS1 era.

MattS4042d ago

This is clearly a personal top 10 list, though. Niche or mainstream doesn't
really matter. I liked Meruru more than RoF, therefore Meruru was on the list.

I actually like RoF, it was one I was tossing up putting in there. But it isn't. I'm not out there claiming this is the definitive 'every single person must agree with me' list. It's a bit of fun to generate some conversation around JRPGs. There really wasn't any need for you to jump in and claim your opinion/ taste in games invalidates mine.

tl;dr - relax. No one was saying RoF is a bad game :-)

hard one i really loved both graces f and xenoblade a lot

Pyrrhus4042d ago

Garces f, imo, should have made that list. Liked Ni no Kuni, Star Ocean and Nier. Really wished Last Odyssey came to the ps3.

BanBrother4042d ago

I got a 360 in 2008 and Lost Odyssey was one of those games I played religiously. One of the best JRPS's played. If it came to the PS3/PS4 (with updated tech) I'm sure many people would buy it. JRPG's are those games where fans want them, even if they don't have the console.

chrispseuphoria4042d ago

Tales of Graces f is an excellent J-RPG from this generation as well.

PlayStation is killing it with the exclusives this year. Exclusive wise, what has xbox released this year?

VersusDMC8d ago

They won't complain about Microsoft not releasing games here but put all their effort into saying that only first party counts. Games like Rebirth and Grandblue Relink don't count. Games published by Sony like Helldivers 2, Stellar Blade and Rise of the Ronin don't count because Sony don't own the studios.

It's some narrative building so for when Hellblade 2 come out they can say, seemingly without shame, that Microsoft is actually releasing first party games this year. And claim victory.🙃

Chevalier8d ago

Weird 1st party games didn't matter when Xbox had so little, but, now they're important again? Guess Ark 3, Stalker 2 don't count any more?

KyRo8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

ARK 3 doesn't exist and it's just a timed exclusive. It's also a game that a majority of the ARK player base doesn't want as it's a massive deviation from what people like about the original game

Abnor_Mal8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

Honestly to me it doesn’t matter what they say, they are just finally getting a chance to say all the things PS fan(boy)s were saying to them for the past few years. Let them get that, they deserve a “win” for a change.

The new narrative is that suddenly first party games matter again when awhile ago they didn’t, but that was because they were struggling with the same three games with the occasional fourth or fifth. That games should be everywhere on all platforms since that’s whats happening to theirs. The consoles don’t matter just the ability to play anywhere. Whatever Xbox is doing Sony will soon follow.

They’re not moving the goalpost anymore, but rather just moving the whole damn stadium.

jwillj2k48d ago

Only a incel would care about who published what and who owns who.

If it’s not on the other consoles it’s an exclusive.

Killing what? Where are the 1st party games??
Stellar Blade and FF7 is what I’m seeing this year.. so shallow!!!!

andy858d ago

Doesn't really matter as long as they're great games. Baffles me why people put an emphasis on 1st party. They're still games you can't play anywhere else this year

Cacabunga7d ago

Andy

PS brand is my favorite because of their stellar first party software.. currently I see absolutely nothing to go crazy for..

CS77d ago

Nonsense.

PS1 and PS2 was built on great third party exclusives like FF, MGS, GTA & Tekken.

RonnySins8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

Killing it my a$$! The 1st party is still MIA and no... Remakes and remasters don't count.

andy858d ago

I mean they literally do count. Imagine saying FF7 Rebirth doesn't count 😂

Tody_ZA8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

@Andy85 Don't forget the remakes for Demon's Souls and Shadow of the Colossus, two of the best PlayStation games around!

And beyond PlayStation, what about Resident Evil 2 and 4? RonnySins wins the award for dumbest opinion!

raWfodog8d ago

Of course I love the games I’ve played from PS but I don’t believe we need to limit it to ‘exclusive’ to acknowledge that Xbox will be releasing some good games this year also. In that same vein, I believe that Xbox diehards shouldn’t limit their acknowledgment of good PS games to 1st party. There are plenty of good games to go around for everybody.

Tacoboto8d ago

This is a Playstation article about Playstation games and your comment is about Xbox. Can't you just celebrate what PS has without dragging this into console war BS?

ChasterMies8d ago

I don’t think Microsoft is releasing games exclusively on Xbox anymore. They have some timed exclusives that release on Xbox first.

Returnal, Astro Bot, and Ratchet made having it since day one worth it.

GT7 free updates and Spiderman 2 and others at 60fps have made this last year more than okay.

But yeah, it’s been dry lately. BG3 and third party have made great filler, but we ready for that SOCOM or Killzone announcement and some more 1st party goodness. Crossing fingers for Ghost of Tsushima 2 announcement this summer.

Didn’t know Helldivers was exclusive! Wtf is going on at Xbox that they can’t get these games, series s strikes again.

SonyStyled8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

Sony owns the Helldivers IP. The first was a PS3/Vita/PC game. It was never an Xbox game that they could ‘get’ a decade ago. I’m not sure what the upset is with Xbox here

CS77d ago

Lol, how do you ignore Rebirth one of the best games ever made?

anast8d ago

Looks like they are on par with the previous gens. Solid games all around. Interestingly enough, we can't say they released a bad game yet this gen. Unlike the Quiet Man dustup.

I actually do not mind if Marathon releases on multiple platforms . I just wish that Marathon has a dedicated single player campaign.

DaniMacYo8d ago

Helldivers 2 is exactly what gaming needed. I’m loving it.

Lost Odyssey Is Still One Of The Best Xbox RPGs Ever

17 years later, it still stands out.

I liked blue dragon more. Lost odyssey is the shit though.

jznrpg68d ago

Two of the few games I still own for Xbox360 . I have Magna Carta 2 , Last Remnant but also have the PS4 version so I may have got rid of it and I have the DS version of Blue Dragon. I think and a few others but I forget what they are since I don’t dust them off. that’s about it.

shinoff218367d ago (Edited 67d ago )

Another one I still havent got to try is infinite undiscovery. I read it was pretty linear but I usually fk with tri ace(star oceans are great).

Really my only issue with lost odyssey was the level cap they hit you with throughout the game. I enjoy just relaxing and doing some grinding every once in awhile. Could've atleast given the option. Other then that. Excellent game.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The 360 imo had atleast half or more that Gen of being the better jrpg system. I bought one earlier then I normally would have for some, and Alan wake. Japanese devs really got in their feelings that Gen and dropped the ball(thanks Phil phish, cocky ass ign, etc)

darthv7267d ago

You'd be better off playing Lost Odyssey on an XBO or Series X as no disc swapping and it looks and plays much better. Same with Blue Dragon. I still keep my 360 hooked up for games not on the bc list. for everything else, I use the series x now. Just last night I installed arkham origins as there is no 8th gen version like asylum/city.

I love having bc on xbox one/series hardware.

shinoff218367d ago

Darth

When I bought the the Xbox one off a couple worker. That was the first thing indid. Bought blue dragon and lost odyssey. Been waiting to catch infinite undiscovery on sale but I forget to check.

I used to own the 360 versions but I bought these digital. I'd like to track down the 360 ones again but no huge deal. I was actually playing through lost odyssey waiting for starfield to drop.

RaidenBlack67d ago

Is Lost Odyssey coming to PS, too?

cthulhucultist68d ago

The game was indeed amazing. Great characters, gameplay and story!

But the dream sequences penned by Shigematsu were sublime.

I still remember many of these stories and I have integrated in the past in my D&D campaign many years ago.

RpgSama68d ago

I'm not going to lie, I cried on more than on a couple of them

Dabigsiebowski68d ago

Microsoft should have just kept pumping money into these guys. Same with a lot of the other studios... the blundered hard.

Lost Odysee deserved a franchise even though development wasn't smooth

Michiel198968d ago

Am I the only one who doesn't wanna see every good game get sequel after sequel? It was a great game, but sometimes it's better to just make a one off and then create a new universe. Sadly that costs a lot more money and publishers don't wanna risk it, but I would definitely prefer it

shinoff218367d ago

I'm fine with sequels in jrpgs, even in the vain of ff sequels, all new stories and characters. It does get old in other genres though sometimes. For the most part I just game by game basis it all.

FinalFantasyFanatic67d ago

They could have done it like Final Fantasy, kept the title name and just start with a new world/characters, it's not like the creator isn't familar with that.

Concertoine68d ago

Idk, Japan never bit for Xbox despite their best efforts around this era. Mistwalker never exploded either, despite future partnerships with Nintendo whichhad a much better chance at success

BrainSyphoned68d ago

It's not like it has had any competition since 2007. Would really like to own the short stories from it in book form.

PapaBop67d ago

360 had some amazing JRPGs in it's early days, Blue Dragon, Eternal Sonata, Tales of Vesperia off the top of my head were all amazing games.

jznrpg68d ago (Edited 68d ago )

The problem with most MS games on 360 was they didn’t make the games they paid for them and that makes you less money in the long run and isn’t something you can continue to do especially with declining sales of consoles. MS should have been starting and growing studios from the beginning but they went for paid games and it leaves them without the knowledge and culture of making games.

shinoff218367d ago

Good points. Never thought of that like that back then.

Sgt_Slaughter67d ago

Not to mention killing the Japanese market that had all sorts of crazy and fun releases up until 2009-2010. They could have gained momentum on Nintendo and kept that going into the Xbox One era, but decided to "unify" efforts and that all but ended their presents in the country. Now, PS4's outsell the Xbox Series S three years into the new system's life cycle, and the 2/3DS at one point was doing the same.
