GameStop concludes fiscal year with net loss, CEO calls 2012 a 'challenging year'

Joystiq: GameStop announced the results of it 2012 fiscal year (ending Feb. 2, 2013) today, with revenues of $403 million, which is slightly down from the $405.1 million in fiscal 2011. Due to "restructuring, impairment and debt retirement expenses of $680.7 million primarily related to goodwill impairment," the company saw a net loss of $269.7 million (2011: net earning of $339.9).

USMC_POLICE4036d ago

Yea because you don't price match, your prices are higher than competitors. To name a few

darthv724036d ago

it was certainly a winning year for me. I was able to fill in plenty of back catalog holes on ps2, xbox, gc, wii, 360, ps3 and even dreamcast.

it had been a long time since i saw a DC game at GS but I had to get it when i did.

Seems now they are phasing out used PS2 and PSP games. some stores have already done that like they did with no longer carrying used xbox and cube games.

Aznreddneck814036d ago

Good I hope they go bankrupt.

just-joe4036d ago

I'd rather they change their business practices for the better and not have people lose their jobs.

Murad4035d ago

I actually disagree. Today's economy outright sucks, and will most likely suck, because well, we are pretty stupid as people and trying to conserve money, or making sure to place money where it would give us the best benefits as a whole, rather than an individual. However, beside the point. I disagree because Gamestop treats their employees like shit. Terrible work hours, very little pay, and what's worse is that you know you're screwing someone over, and if you try to stop if, you're going to get fired. There's downright no reason to work there, even if you are broke, since guess what? 8 dollars an hour is still considered being broke.

just-joe4034d ago

@Murad
If there's no reason to work there, then why do people still work there? No one forces the employees to work there, they do it out of choice because they generally need the money. They can quit if they want but most choose to keep it because they need the money. Losing a job be it good or bad when you don't another lined up is NOT fun nor any better for a person.

jeeves864036d ago

Yeah, because that's just what everyone needs, more people without jobs.

Khordchange4036d ago

Its gonna be a rough road ahead considering that the wii u, PS4, Xbox 720, 3DS, and Vita will or all have downloadable game features

profgerbik4036d ago (Edited 4036d ago )

Only reason I want them open is so I have a place to pre-order. I don't like waiting for mail or dealing with the problems of an item not being shipped when it said it was. No other game stores or any where else to pre-order around here other than Gamestop.

Postal service blows now a days, I swear every time I order something it is never here when it says it is supposed to be. Comes days later after the tracking said it was delivered a long time ago..

Roper3164036d ago

sorry to hear you have such issues, I switched over to Amazon the beginning of this gen because they were always offering 10-20 dollar credits for pre-orders where GS wasn't. While I may not have gotten my games on release day I would always receive them about a week later without a issue.

I would say that since I switched over to Amazon I have gotten at least 15 games for free probably closer to 20 just on pre-order credits alone. Then I usually get a email saying I got a credit for like another 1-2 dollars for their lowest price guarantee.

SolidSystem4036d ago

I love using Amazon for my pre-orders. I get home from work and boom there it is.

ZeekQuattro4036d ago

This is to be expected. I only recently went to Gamestop last September. Before that I hadn't been in one since late 2007. The only reason I remember that was because when I went in they told me my Power Up card expired 5yrs ago. lol I know I'm not the only one to take my business elsewhere over the years. In many cases other businesses over better prices and more cash back if you trade in.

Tales Of Graces Ƒ Retro Review – Holding Out For a Hero

Gary Green said: Namco Bandai heard the call of many fans asking for the PlayStation release of Tales of Graces which was originally released seemingly exclusively for the Wii back in 2009. If you’re acquainted with the Tales series then Graces f won’t be something entirely new to you, yet if you’re a newcomer then you’ll find a plethora of gameplay mechanics and nuances that distinguish this series from other JRPGs. While the game finds itself following the traditional archetype of JRPGs, such as a somewhat clichéd story, Graces has something to offer to both veterans and newcomers alike.

Paying Extra For Early Access Cannot Be The Industry Norm

Charging for early access has started to become a regular practice in several AAA games, and the gaming community should not tolerate this.

CrimsonWing699h ago

Don’t uh… don’t pay for it then? 🤷‍♂️ It’s 3 days early, let people who can’t wait pony up to pay for early access. I’d hope people have more control over themselves if they don’t want to pay extra. I personally, do not see an issue with the option. If I’m hyped for a game and they give you early access, I’ll pay. If it’s something I can wait to play on “actual release” I won’t pay extra. It’s as simple as that.

Crows909h ago

Except your entirely mistaken if you think it's "early access"

Theyre just charging you extra to play it on release. So gullible.

Obscure_Observer8h ago

"Theyre just charging you extra to play it on release. So gullible."

Not really.

In some cases, paying for early access will grant you access to play those games at the same time media outlets and reviewers are playing their copies.

Besides, it´s a single player game. It´s not like early access to MP competitive games like Battlefield which EA would grant a full week early access to those willing to pay; which gives a unfair advantage to those gamers and breaks the game´s balance.

CrimsonWing697h ago

are you playing it earlier than retail release?

If that’s the correct answer, how is it not early access?

Crows909h ago

It's not early access...it's playing on release...early access is when the game isn't finished and needs a little more time...you also get it months in advance.

Let's not get confused here..

Andrew3366h ago

You get access to the game before it goes live for people who purchased the standard version of the game... thus you are getting early access.

Crows905h ago

Nope...you get access to the game the day it goes live. Those who didn't pay extra are blocked from accessing it as a punishment for not paying full price

VersusDMC9h ago

Microsoft has been doing premium edition early access for awhile(Forza and Starfield recently) ...so why is it an issue now when Ubisoft does it?

It can't be the gamepass excuse as Ubisoft has day one subscriptions as well.

Obscure_Observer8h ago

I´ve paid for Starfield´s Premium Edition to get early access to the game, plus Shattered Space expansion.

I don´t regret my decision and I mighty pay for it again to get early access to Fable and TESVI.

Andrew3366h ago

@VincentVanBro yea like the kind of idiots who worry about how adults spend their money.

Crows905h ago

@andrew

Just like the kind of idiots who get scammed and don't realize it.

Andrew3362h ago

@crows do you understand what the word scam means? Choosing to pay more money to play a game before other people is not being scammed.

gold_drake7h ago

as long as people are paying for it, it will be a thing unfortunately.

the fear of missing out is ... huge. especially online.

CrimsonWing697h ago

I don’t think it’s about missing out. Think of it like a movie you’re hyped for. You can see it early if you pay extra or just wait until Friday when it officially releases.

It’s nothing more than that.

Crows905h ago(Edited 5h ago)

Nope. You're not seeing it early. Everyone else is seeing it late.

When a product releases to the public...that's the release date. If they company then chooses to block access to the product unless you pay extra...that's not early access...that's day 1 access.

CrimsonWing693h ago(Edited 3h ago)

@Crows90

No, there’s a public release date and an early release date. Just like with movies having early screenings and then public screenings.

They let the public know the release date and then give people an option to play early by paying more.

It's A Crime That There's No Sleeping Dogs 2 Yet

Huzaifah from eXputer: "Sleeping Dogs from the early 2010s is one of the best open-world games out there but in dire need of a resurgence."

LG_Fox_Brazil1d 7h ago

I agree, I consider the first one a cult classic already

isarai1d 1h ago

You say "yet" as if it's even possible anymore. United Front Games is gone, along with anyone that made this game what it is

CrimsonWing6911h ago

That’s what happens when games sell poorly. And I’ve seen people wonder why people cry when a game sells badly… this is your answer.

solideagle10h ago

Majority of the time it's true but if a company/publisher is big (in terms of money), they can take a hit or 2. e.g. I am not worried about Rebirth sales as Square will make Remake 3 anyway but if FF 17 doesn't sell then Square might need to look for alternative. <-- my humble opinion

Abnor_Mal10h ago

Doesn’t Microsoft own the IP now since they acquired Activision?

Abnor_Mal6h ago

Oh okay, Activision owned True Crime, but when that didn’t sell as intended it was canceled. Six months later Square Enix bought the rights and changed the title to Sleeping Dogs.*

*As per Wikipedia

boing19h ago(Edited 9h ago)

Sleeping Dogs was a sleeper hit back then. It was fantastic. It actually still is. Would love a sequel to this, or at least a revive of True Crime series.
