It has nothing to do with changing the specs of the NextBox.
That is not possible at this state if we take as a consideration of possible release date on November. The only thing that they can change/upgrade is the HDD and "Maybe" just saying maybe a little more of the same type of RAM.

So the only thing that I can think of is a possible reveal at the E3 (So they don't have to pull 2 shows with only 1 month of difference in between them)

@ xxLucky - it's getting pretty late in the day to copy anything - we're seven-to-eight months from launch, far too late to meaningfully change hardware specs (without pushing the launch back into 2014) - and Sony would look right odd changing them just after detailing what those hardware specs are. It's very odd that MS has basically conceded the first half of the year, media-wise, to the PS4 - they want to be getting their ideas and the like out there (both to the public and developers).

And about the copying, it doesnt necessary have to be the specs, look at how fast the WiiU second screen concept got 'stolen' by MS with smartglass and by Sony with the Vita

Like I said earlier, the fact that Sony launched a pre-emtive strike by announcing first has put Microsoft at a disadvantage.

What that did was allow Microsoft an opportunity to fall into a false sense of security. Thinking that there was no rush, then BAMM! Sony makes an announcement.

Sony most certainly have a sale from me whatever happens. It seems to be pushing all the right buttons.

The thing I find most odd is the early reveal from Sony. Was it reactionary based on something they found out about the competition or just saw an opportunity?

MS have every chance to get me on board too. It worries me that they seem quite happy to change personality for turning a quick profit though.

Despite owning a 360, the evolution of the product to me feels artificially orchestrated and engineered like a board meeting of how to make a 'successful games machine' but it also has to be said that quite a few of those ideas actually turned out pretty damn good. We hear that the platform is great to develop for and much of the operating system and features are great too.

I suppose the great thing about their silence is that you cannot truly dismiss it until they are ready to let us in on it.

Thank you, someone on this site who uses their mind. There is not doubt we won't see a reveal until E3. The countdown site made that very clear in my mind. What changes do people expect them to do? Games are already developed, systems are close, if not already, in development for the fall release. MS is just going to do a huge E3, simple as that.

Sell the 360 to new customers now while they can. The kind of customer who waits eight years to buy a 360 will surely buy a 720 soon anyway, so MS might as well squeeze that 360 sale in their too. Sound business strategy right there.

It's a great way for MS to double up on those ultra-profitable hardware sales, while avoiding the costly business of letting the existing 80 million 360 owners know that they can go ahead and buy all the 360 games they want from this point forward knowing they will all work on the 720.

Nobody is going to buy a 360, then buy a 720 any time soon after. If anything, dropping $200 or $300, or even worse, $100 with a contract, on a 360 will discourage people from getting a second $400 to $500 console soon after.

And it's all the more stupid when you consider anyone buying a 360 at this point also decided against two other next-gen systems. If they opted for a 360 over waiting a few months for a PS4, there's little reason to think next-gen gaming has that great or an appeal in the first place.

SDF's brilliant idea is that MS wants to double dip on hardware sales by staying silent (at the expense of the opportunity to market the 720, no less) when it's extremely unlikely new Xbox customers are interested in getting both.

The Xbox team is probably trying to make their reveal absolutely perfect. The downside though is that Sony keeps revealing more information on PS4 and building more hype month by month.

I've seen several other comments saying that they are holding back on the reveal in order to try and make last minute changes to the Next box. This is highly unlikely. It's simply too late for that to be a viable option. They MIGHT be able to change the HDD or something, but that's about it...

What is more likely is that they trying to put together a reveal/show that will be just as exciting as the PS4 reveal. Getting together devs to come on stage and praise the Nextbox, trying to gather a collection of games to show with a focus on exclusives (good luck to them there), planning on how to advertise the Nextbox in a way that won't make them seem weaker or less 'core gamer'-focused than Sony, etc.

Now, if the rumors are true that they are holding back on the reveal because they are not worried and have something up their sleeve, then I must ask, what could they possible have that is so damn impressive that they are willing to concede this much potential press coverage and time to Sony?

I think they they will have to as one memory pool is unorthadox as hell, specially a GDDR5 one.
MS never expected this.

They will have to match GDDR5 if they wanto compete, so going from DDR3 will need drastic changes to the entire system, a total redesign of the motherboard atleast.

Its going to be interesting, specially when a intelligent move by Sony would be to release specs for MS to react to, but having an even more powerfull system in mind for E3.
