Why Metal Gear Solid V doesn’t fit in the Metal Gear timeline

Original-Gamer.com: "With all the excitement that the Metal Gear Solid V trailer generated at GDC 2013, some of the scenes shown did not match up to the series timeline. In fact, upon further research, MGSV does not fit within the timeline and contradicts the established canon."

Either that or we're beginning to venture into Alternate Timelines, just to troll those who somehow manage to keep up with the already convoluted timeline of the Metal Gear franchise.

ogmaster4036d ago

Ah shit. Just what we needed, more Kojima-made timelines.

DatNJDom814036d ago

here comes another "journalist" saying something about a game that he knows nothing about. Has he worked on the story? Does he have information that Kojima himself doesnt have? Nowadays they want to come off as they do. Ooooh I played every Metal Gear game and Im putting pieces together. Please just STFU.

rezzah4036d ago

People are making conclusive statements when the game isn't even finished, unless it went gold and I didn't read about it.

Most of all, they never played it or got an opinion from a person who beat it (as if they can).

For all we know, even with certain information to create such claims, everything in the game could be a dream.

"Why Metal Gear Solid V doesn’t fit in the Metal Gear timeline"

There is no reason. Every single thing that's not been explained in the games were explained through a crappy PS3 app Konami themselves released to push the Metal Gear Solid 4 sales on launch (so that people who were scared of not understanding the story and lore could get some information from an official app). And most of the stuff that's been stated in the article are circumstantial at best. He acts like a person could only go into coma once when it's been revealed before that Big Boss was in a coma twice.

tl;dr Most of the "points" in the article are based off of info from Metal Gear Database app for PS3, which is known to be a horrible source of information.

Move along people. Until we play the game, none of us will know what'll actually happen in the game.

2pacalypsenow4036d ago

with MGS being all mainstream and on every damn console its lost some of its magic IMO i think MGS is just getting milked by now. Im a huge fan of MGS but i think MGS is gonna end up like Resident Evil sadly

rezzah4036d ago

People want MGS, if it was up to Kojima the series likely would have ended a long time ago.

And it isn't being milked, games that are milked become stale overtime. Only those who enjoy the core of the series will still play the games. Then again this point is based on perception so to each their own.

Your first point is foolish because a game's core isn't affected by being mainstream or non-exclusive. What affects the outcome of the game is based on the developers and the publishers. The good thing about MGS is that Kojima has always been the mind behind it, unlike RE which had heavy influences from various minds. All the good RE games are from Shinji Mikami. As far as I know the GOW series is the only series to have such highly praised games with different directors per game.

"I don’t like being thought of as ‘the Metal Gear guy.’ There’s a lot more I can do."

*Turns around and helps with MG: Rising.

*Then announces MGSV.

-_____________-

@below

Didn't Kojima Productions write the story and pretty much produce ALL the cut scenes or something?

GamingBuddha094036d ago

he really didnt help with rising, more that he gave rising over to Platinum Games and said "make it work" if he didnt give rising to Platinum i dont he would have had the time to plan out MGSV

SubtenkoGaming4036d ago

That's alright, as long as he is with Sony his creativity wont be hindered :)

CobraUnit4036d ago

This might be a bit off topic but why does Big boss in MGS5 look like Solid snake? Shouldn't he look more like Big boss at the end MGS4 only younger?

Now that we know that Solidus was the perfect clone it would only make sense to make him look more like a highly detailed but young Solidus.

Mouktouk4036d ago

Well, Metal Gear Solid 4 takes place in 2014, while Metal Gear Solid 5 likely takes place in the early 80's, so he still got time to age and have the look he has in MGS4 (especially considering Big Boss was born in 1935).

CobraUnit4036d ago

But big bosses face is slimmer than the model in MGS5 so that makes no sense.

Snakes face in and head in MGS5 looks much bigger than big bosses head in mgs4, and as far as i know you don't get slimmer when you age.

I personally think that the model should be changed to acuratly display a younger big boss.

HeavenlySnipes4036d ago

Well Snake before MGS4 looked like the younger version of the MGS4 Big Boss

GamingBuddha094036d ago

it would but between 1989 and 1996 Solidus was in the CIA fighting in the First Liberian Civil War commanding the Small Boy Unit of child soldiers, of which Raiden was a part of. This would place Solidus between the ages 17 and 24. Big Boss between the time of Peace Walker and the attack on Mother Base in the MGSV trailer could be anywhere between 39 and mid to late 40's

Remember that it's not the first time MGS storyline has been rewritten in order to fit to the scenario of other Metal Gear games.
For example, in Metal Gear Solid, when talking about Dr. Clark, this person is referred as a man.
Yet, in Metal Gear Solid 3, it is pretty obvious that Dr. Clark is a woman.

So maybe the timeline will be rewritten again for The Phantom Pain, but there are still potential factors to consider:
- because the doctor in TPP trailer (supposedly Dr Madnar) says he wakes up from a 9 years coma doesn't mean it is true;
- the person who wakes up from that coma may not be Big Boss. He may be that "third man" Master Miller is referring to at the beginning of the trailer, or he may be (I don't know) the very first experiment from Les Enfants Terribles project. Who knows, he may be an age-accelerated clone;

However, in my opinion, it is just a simple mistake that will either be fixed, either be forgotten.

Ace_Pheonix4036d ago

Interesting theories, there is definitely more going on there that we don't know about. With Psycho Mantis and all those dream elements mixed into reality, who knows what's really going on. Did you ever see the DGN for MGS1? The Psycho Mantis segment there is totally different, and actually pretty cool. These trailers have reminded me of it a good deal.

Mouktouk4036d ago

Nope, never seen it the DGN, unfortunately. That's the one released on PSP, right?

porkChop4036d ago

Les Enfants Terribles happened in 1972, 11 years before The Phantom Pain, and 2 years before Ground Zeroes and Peace Walker. So that can't be a clone.

I get really annoyed with all the retcons in this series. Like come on, stick to your own fucking story. Metal Gear games by themselves are amazing, but if you look at the story as a whole, and all the retcons, the whole thing is incredibly sloppy and poorly planned out.

Revolver_X_4036d ago

I dont see a problem with rewriting canon from old a$$ MSX2 games. As far as MGS1 goes, Big Boss is Snakes father. A fight between Grey Fox and Solid Snake happened in Zanzibar. Naomi and Frank's backstory of how they met.

Kojima didnt even think Metal Gear would go anywhere. Hell, in MG1 Snake doesnt even acknowledge Big Boss as his father. There are inconsistencies just between MG1 and MG2. Most of the MGS fanbase today have only read about MG1 and MG2, but havent even played them to understand how bad they were storywise. I see nothing wrong with trying to give a full coherent backstory now.

TheOneEyedHound4036d ago (Edited 4036d ago )

Not at all, everything fits perfect.
Please tell me one sloppy sequence?

Hint the patriots never existed, that should tell you a lot, in a lot of different ways.

Unicron4036d ago

Regarding Clark - in the original translation from Japan, no gender was specified. When it was brought over to English, the Dr. was made male.

Tango_9114036d ago

I agree with your first point. I mean for all we know this "9 years" could be completely false and be setup for a story motive in the Phantom Pain, where Big boss has to find the truth

Mouktouk4036d ago

Yep. I don't know if that point is right or wrong, but we all know Metal Gear games, from the very first episode, is a matter of lies, manipulations and false truths.

So who knows what is true and what is false, in a world full of flaming unicorns, living-deads and giant whales? Which part of the Phantom Pain trailer is true, which one is an hallucination, a lie or an elaborate manipulation?

Too bad it was a lazy release. They could've updated the visuals and everything. Missed opportunity.

...and yet, they couldn't give more respect and effort into the collection.
What a terrible company.

Edit: they did

Yes, these are total lifetime sales of the entire series.

Yea I don’t get why they’re allowing old reviews to be posted here. Someone did one on Soul Reaver and I got so excited thinking there was some stealth release of an HD Remaster, but no… it’s just someone who had a slow day posted an old review…

Cacabunga181d ago

I liked the game but for me it felt somehow like a military simulator rather than a proper MGS.. i got bored of that

micdagoat19181d ago

I do wish they would remaster all the soul reavers

micdagoat19181d ago

it was done this morning though

goldwyncq181d ago

The author was in a coma for 9 years and didn't get to play the game when it released.

Chocoburger181d ago

This review arrived just in time for launch. Perfect timing!

RupeeHoarder181d ago

Amazing how bad this game looks already. We keep acting like this gen doesn't feel like an update but I think we're starting to see it.

YourMommySpoils181d ago

Looks better than Starfield, Cyberpunk and most recent games out. Still fine.

RupeeHoarder181d ago

It most certainly does not lol.

andy85181d ago

Have you player Cyberpunk since the first day? It's absolutely stunning now

1nsomniac181d ago

One of the worst games ever made. Absolute overhyped trash!

Snowb420181d ago

The gameplay was great. It was the tacked on open world and repetitive missions that messed the game up.

Shane Kim181d ago

The game started really strong in that hospital, but after a couple of hours I wondered if it was even an mgs game I was playing.

KyRo181d ago

The hospital section was the only bit that felt like a MGS game.

MGS4 was the ending for me. I totally ignore the fact 5 exists. It didn't need to exist tbh
