Community Voice: Can a Voice Actor Make or Break a Game?

"We at Vivid Gamer want to ask our readers a few questions. Do you think that the lack of David Hayter’s voice is reason enough not to purchase this entry when it’s released? Or do you think that it is possible that, similar to the Spike VGA trailer and the fictitious Joakim Mogren/Moby Dick Studios, this is just another media ploy? Also, do you think a voice actor should have this much power over a game to influence sales? Feel free to comment below."

To me, as long as the voice acting is good, it shouldn't matter. But then the only game I can really think of that I was affected by a shift in voice acting was P4G, and it was only two of the cast. I hated Chie's new voice actor, but I know most people (who didn't play the original) didn't care... I do wonder, though, if a game like Uncharted released with anyone other than Nolan North doing Drake's voice if that would affect the game at all.

Nitrowolf24040d ago

thing is, with MGS5 Snake already old. I know old snake in MGS4 has Hayter voice, but not Big Boss. They've established that Big Boss won't sound like his young self with MGS4. I wonder who will do his voice though.

Lets not forget he was in a 9 year Coma. I'm not doctor, but coming out of a coma can have some damaging affect. I'm not sure if it can happen to your voice, I know with stroked your speech can be affected.

This is making me reconsider buying those games.
I love this franchise and at this point i can tell you is not for the story(almost as complicated as Kingdom story)

I most like snake, and i am having a hard time separating snake and David Hayter.

Very sad

MHenderson4040d ago

Well, it makes sense, since Big Boss had a different V.A. in MGS4, so surely he'd be transitioning to that voice anyway.

Since PW took place in 1974 and he was in a coma for 9 years, it'd be, at earliest, 1983, and at latest, 1994-ish (since Metal Gear 1 takes place in 1995), so it could be transitioning to lead up to (HOPEFULLY?) a remake of MG 1 and 2?

TheLiztress4040d ago

While I admit that I can't really see anyone else doing the voice of Snake or Big Boss, I do think that it is possible for someone to take over Hayter's role. I don't see myself letting something like this influence my decision in buying a game, either. I might lament about how I don't think the voice fits (such as Chie and Teddie from P4G), though.

absolutely a voice actor can make or break a game, but most of that is the quality and not necessarily the voice actor. However there are the iconic characters in games that I wouldn't like to see changed, unless it makes sense within the game itself. If Drake had a different voice, it wouldn't be the same even if they got someone similar.

But normally it just comes down to quality, Darkness 2 had some really annoying voice actors and it ruined some scenes. in my opinion that bear in persona 4 makes me want to stab my ears. So it can ruin a game especially if its the main character.

MGS 1 Remake?? Please be the case...

Kilua1180d ago

Can guarantee you it is. It is a poorly kept secret that Bluepoint are working on the MGS 1 remake and this just adds even more credibility to it.

CobraKai1180d ago

If it’s Bluepoint then I’ll have faith they’ll keep the game true to the original, unlike Twin Snakes.

blackbeld1179d ago

If true day one buy for me ;)

Nyxus1180d ago

Sounds like just a reunion to me to be honest. This isn't the first time some of the cast got together and people got crazy. https://www.metalgearinform...

Don't get me wrong, I'd like it to be a remake or some other project like that, but I don't think people should get their hopes up too much over this.

StoneyYoshi1180d ago (Edited 1180d ago )

A 23 year reunion? Wouldn't that normally land on an even number? The link you provided would have been like a 20 year reunion from MGS1 release.

Nyxus1180d ago

What do you mean 23 years? It's not just voice actors from MGS1, but also from MGS3 (The Boss, young Ocelot). I think the date of the reunion is just random.

Double_O_Revan1180d ago

I'm still hoping it'll be an original Metal Gear remake, not Solid.

Snookies121179d ago

Original Metal Gear were fun games, but Solid is where the story really took off. It's why so many people want to see it fully realized with modern technology. Twin Snakes was good, but it came far too early in my opinion.

DarXyde1179d ago

Or...a franchise reboot, beginning with Metal Gear.

Z5011179d ago

Wouldn't you rather see a remake of a game that hasn't already been remade?

Z5011180d ago

MGS1 has already been remade. Twin Snakes.
We're now hoping for remakes of remakes?

RazzerRedux1180d ago

I am. I can't speak for "we".

AnotherGamer1180d ago

Twin Snakes was just too goofy imo, even for a Metal Gear Solid game.

StoneyYoshi1180d ago

Wasn't it like the same exact game but with better graphics?

RPGer1180d ago

Can you elaborate, I think your statement is intresting. I mean MGS is goofy master, but you made it as if it MGS with Adam Sandler or Nintendo goofy overload.

andy851180d ago

There's a bit of a difference between a remake of a game 1 console generation ago like Twin Snakes than 4 generations. Look at the demons souls remake, that was only 10 years apart and look at the reactions from it. If the same developers make it, it would be amazing.

Orchard1180d ago

Remake the original. Twin Snakes was way too easy because it was the original level design, but with all the new MGS2 stuff added on (e.g. lockers, first person shooting, etc.).

OhReginald1179d ago

Twin snakes was garbage and did not live up to the greatness that was metal gear solid on ps1.

warriorcase1179d ago

While true it's still not widely accessible being only on the Gamecube and never ported. A remake would fix this.
