PS4: Too Little, Too Early

Gi - What is up with Sony jumping the gun on their next-gen console? Well, it is not necessarily jumping the gun… The timing is just about right. Late 2013 is a very appropriate time for the next generation of gaming consoles to come out. But, it has been a month now since Sony announced the PS4 and gave its “details” about how it’s going to change the future of gaming, and the “details” were sparse and pretty unsatisfying.

Isn't that the point of being "early"? The "vague details" give developers enough to know what they are working with and puts pressure on the other platform holders to one up or follow suit.

I honestly think Sony gave enough information overall in Feb. For GDC, they gave even more information, which is plenty to suite my taste buds. If you noticed, the content given is more structural, which is very understandable. Sony seems to want people to know what the system is capable of doing. This information is more for developers and enthusiast interested in this content. If this info does not at least wet your taste buds than you only care about the gaming system; and there is nothing wrong with that.

In the article the author should have made this clear from the door. I say this because later he says, 'where is the physical system', and I stopped reading after that.

I think Sony played it perfectly.
They announced the console, showed us the specs then showed us some exclusive games and multiplats. Then they have shown us their support for indie developers at GDC and some more info with the system

Jumping the gun? It's been close to a decade since ps3 was first unveiled back in 2005! How is waiting that long jumping the gun????? I think this is just a typical Xbox fanboy who's butthurt Microsoft won't be having a head start this time and currently all the talk is on Sony and the ps4.

Don't worry, good or bad, very soon I'm sure much of the talk will switch over to Microsoft once their new console is finally revealed. Just be patient. :D

Before E3 2005 we saw killzone 2, motorstorm, etc,etc, pshome.,bla bla bla.
Than, a sudden delay, and guess what? Those games didnt match the hype,

The CGI-stuff they did with Motorstorm and Killzone 2 wasn`t the smartest thing to do, even though K2 got pretty close to matching the video.

I would say they delivered a lot more than Microsoft did with it`s fake Kinect videos, which wasn`t anything close to what they showed first with Milo etc. So many companies does it unfortunately.

But you do know Killzone Shadow Fall was running live on the presentation right? I`mean they even played the same demo on Jimmy Fallon:

The same was said for the new Infamous game, so they definately showed the goods this time around.

I would also say the PS4 is looking a lot better than the next Xbox so far, with great graphics, 8gigs ram, developer friendly etc. The Xbox has a lot of negative rumours going around and will have to deliver a great show when it`s shown for the first time and putting those rumours to rest.

first i was suggesting the fact that they anounced fullhd 60 fps on all games, back on 2005, second, im hapy with ps4 new direction, just a bit disapointed for the AMD route, to me, a console should be a console, the milions invested on cell, they should been invested on a gpu, not a crap AMD lowspec budget line gpu.
were talking of moving milions of thing on screen several times a second, the more the best, dont tell me they cant, cause they own cinema studios and AMD does not produce cinema quality render gpus like other dedicated companies, they just looked for a near free console just to publicite a new proprietary hardware of a near broke company. period

Well, most probably if not Microsoft surprise us, they`re going to have the best console graphics wise again, which is enough for me.

I`m really glad they went with 8 gigs of ram at least. Just seeing what their own studios does with The Last of Us, GOW:A and Beyond makes me confident they`ll deliver fantastic games for PS4 too.

And they never said all games was going to be in 1080p and 60 fps. Just that it was possible with some games.

I noticed the few devs who talked about both sony & ms is approach to the nextbox & ps4 they all said they like the approach sony is taking and it starts with the gamers and the ps4 is dev friendly so that devs are happy at the same time. Vague details my #ss they showed and talked more than most bs reveals do. Most reveals talk about crap, show tech demos that never get realized and steer clear from any hardware aspects. Ps4 did quite the contrary even showing live demos and gameplay of games already in production for ps4. Beyond that they gave some good info on specs.....

I've said this the day MSFT launched the countdown clock back on JAN 2 2013. I mean come on, leaked 720 docs floating around then Sony suddenly reveals the PS4 in the most incomplete way in the history of gaming. Sony gathered what they had ready for the reveal and filled in the blanks with hyperbole(No hardware, boasting gaiki features but admitting it's no where near ready and they don't know how it will work)

Sony purchased Gaiki as an desperate shortcut to stay in the same league as MSFT's cloud vision etc. Copied Kinect every legally way possible.

The early PS4 reveal is really doing its job.

-It got the industry excited and focus on it (maybe for now till MS reveals their console).
-It got the community talking about it (you can feel the detractors cringing & wincing and the supporters cheering & celebrating).

Overall, all this free press is actually doing more good than harm. The lack of complete info just keeps the watchers tuned in for the next announcement.

Does it matter? It would be too little or too late or too early no matter what they did? They announced before Microsoft it is too early. If they had announced after Microsoft it would be too late.If they said nothing it would be bad business. Sony got all the information about the PS4 out of the way early.They now more then enough time in E3 to talk about sales,price,games and other consoles.If they had waited for E3 they would have to take up most of their time introducing the PS4 and people would be on their @$$ about 'What about the VITA and the PS3.How come Sony didn't make time for them?' Now they freed up at least a whole hour that would have been taken up talking about the PS4.

The amount of information that they revealed at the time was perfect. They didn't reveal their entire hand, but gave away enough so that people will get excited, while still leaving out enough in order to make a splash at E3. On top of all of this, they were able to come out with their next-gen reveal before their competition. I must say that it was a very good marketing move on their part and they have been doing a good job of keeping it up since then.

I'm guessing the 360 coming out barely 4 years after the Xbox wasn't "too soon". Six years is also roughly the gap between the PS2 and the PS3. 5 years between PS1 and PS2.
