Looking Back At Thief, A Series That Defined The Stealth Genre

GI:Nineteen ninety-eight saw the release of two landmarks in the stealth genre. The most notable was Metal Gear Solid, a game that is considered one of the best stealth games in history. However, there was another title that came out shortly after Metal Gear that played an important role in defining the stealth genre. This was Thief: The Dark Project by Looking Glass Studios. Unlike other games that have heavy stealth components, such as Deus Ex, Tenchu, and even Assassin’s Creed, stealth is the only way to progress through Thief: The Dark Project and its two sequels, Thief II: The Metal Age, and Thief: Deadly Shadows. With Square Enix and Eidos Montreal working on a new game in the series and other current games like Dishonored that seem to draw inspiration from the project, we thought it was time for a look back at the landmark series.

never played a thief game ill be checking it out one of these days.

haymoza4048d ago

Defining the genre? That's kind of pushing it.

TechnicianTed4048d ago

Well it did define it, it was a game purely about stealth.

Snookies124048d ago

What about Tenchu? Not sure which came first, just curious as to where that fit into the whole "defining stealth timeline." :]

Bathyj4048d ago

Tenchu was first and one of my favourite series.

I love stealth but I don't know about pure stealth. I still want to kill people, not just sneak on by them.

TechnicianTed4048d ago (Edited 4048d ago )

You could kill people in Thief, but the emphasis was on avoiding confrontation. And there was no need to kill when you could just hit them over the head with your cosh, and then dump their body in a concealed spot.

Or you could knock them out and toss them into a well or over a wall, which would likely kill them. I enjoyed doing that sometimes.

KingKelloggTheWH4048d ago

I'm pretty sure MetalGear defined the genre...and well you know created it.

RTheRebel4048d ago

Yes with a little radar to tell you where enemies are located.lol
MGS is overrated, Thief is the stealth genre.

KingKelloggTheWH4048d ago

Metal Gear Created the genre,I'n not arguing which is superior.

TechnicianTed4048d ago

Castle Wolfenstein created the genre actually, a game made in 1981.

doublebass24048d ago

i wish i had 10 agree votings for your comment(you taffor!!!!)Mgs series is a bit overrated, but also was one the first games who made your game progress look like a movie! There were stealth elements too in MGS(though I believe Splinter Cell 1-3 had even more), but clearly not as many as in thief 1-2(the third did nt like that much.

Jyndal4048d ago

Comparing Metal Gear to Thief is kinda like comparing apples and oranges. They're both stealth games, but in Thief, when you were discovered, chances are, you were dead. The main character wasn't a fighter in any sense of the word. Metal Gear had A LOT more emphasis on being able to fight yourself out of a sticky situation.

KingKelloggTheWH4048d ago

I know,I'm just saying as metal gear did create the stealth genre it did define it.

MWH4048d ago (Edited 4048d ago )

all I read is "create" and "genre". it's a nice weather outside btw.

Thief - Taken From Us Too Soon

The Thief game series has had many ups-and-downs, and 2014's reboot showed a great deal of promise nearly a decade ago.

Notellin265d ago

This would be such a great franchise to reboot. A darker game than Dishonored, but focused around stealth and large scale heists from an oppressive monarchy.

That's probably my dream game. I love immersive sims and stealth!

Noskypeno265d ago

People say they hate forced stealth sections in games. But a game focused on stealth with good mechanics and level design feels refreshing from the guns blazing games which I also enjoy. I really enjoyed playing Splinter cell, a game that not many try to mimic today. Not too many games let you shoot lights out, or throw cans or bottles to distract guards. Sure there are games with stealth options like the new Wolfenstein but it doesn't feel necessary to play it that way. Hitman might be the only game that has that feeling, except for that Korean game that may or may not ever come out.

isarai264d ago

You should try the Sniper Elite games, so good, especially with coop

Notellin264d ago

Same here. I'm glad there are some other people who enjoy these types of games!

@isarai I tried Sniper Elite 5 and ended up really enjoying that one. Went back and played 4 as well!.

ModsDoBetter265d ago (Edited 265d ago )

The last one was a trainwreck and has been in the bargain bin since just after launch. If they bring it back, they need a massive change in direction.

Inverno265d ago

only direction they should take is putting it in reverse and going back to what the originals did. I couldn't finish this game, and I made a choice to never play it again. I watched a video about the og Thief and Deus Ex games and the current AAA standard will forever hold back these games. These 2 games alone had already solved so many problems with modern gaming that I don't think they'll get a chance at something great unless they're made by a dev that actually give a damn.

monkey602265d ago

Jesus the last installment sells at about 2 euro and even that is over paying for it. Absolutely diabolical game

SimpleSlave265d ago

Ups and Down? More like Up, UP, Pot Hole, Free Fall into the Abyss...

Rutaprkl264d ago

Thief Deadly Shadows remaster would be awesome.
