Why Gran Turismo 6 Will be the Greatest Racing Simulator To Date

"It has been widely used amongst professional race car drivers and teams to train before being able to jump on the track in real life; they use Gran Turismo 5 to hone their driving skills and keep them sharp for when it’s time to hit the race. A comment from professional race car driver and instructor Tony Brakohiapa after being asked how Gran Turismo 5 stacks up compared to real life:"

HammadTheBeast4046d ago

Or Sony Santa Monica, or Media Molecule. Or David Cage's thing.

David Cage's thing. Aka old man on black screen looks around 2!

Washington-Capitals4046d ago

Uh... the Game of the Year will go to next Metal Gear Solid. MGS4 was hands down the most innovative and greatest game of the current generation. Kojima will deliver again with MGS5. But I bet if its announced its Multiplatform than it can no longer be GOTY since Sony Fanboys cannot accept that. The hypocrisy on this site is why I stopped posting for such a long time.

Lets see GT5 was really really good so if they can improve other aspects than it will be the best

GT5 got SIm aspect of racing game to perfection
Forza IMO has better online features so take a look at that and improve
Less cars but more detailed cars, instead of having 600 generic and 400 great looking ones maybe do 500 fully detailed dun to drive cars

Have a better career structure
Do include NASCAR but include seasons or career

Other than that I thought GT5 was an amazing game so it could only get better with tweaks to a proven system

JRivera924046d ago

Gran Turismo 5 had to have been THE best racer I've played, ever! Sure it's not as Arcade-y as it's fellow Need For Speed or Burnout, but that's what separates it from the group. I have no doubt that Gran Turismo 6 will be even bigger and better in every way (well, other than Graphics since GT5 is just simply beautiful).

Skips4046d ago

Agreed, COMPLETELY NEW GAME after all the patches! Best racing sim on consoles.

neoandrew4046d ago

It is not simulator...

Real simulators are only on pc.

Reverent4046d ago

I cannot tell you how many hours I spent racing loops on the Daytona track in the exact same car... How the hell is Polyphony so good at making normally boring things into the definition of amazing?

N0S3LFESTEEM4046d ago

Perfecting a couple car models then importing PS2 quality cars for the rest of the game seemed kind of lazy (they could of at least bumped up the poly count)not to mention the crash physics are ridiculously lame.

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Axe994046d ago

There were definitely issues with GT5, but it's far and away the best sim-style racer on console. Unfortunately, Forza's handling model (close, but still clearly not at the same level) and AI (in particular - you'll see cars shoot off the track at corners, at the Expert level, it's laughable stuff) hold it back. GT could learn a thing or two from Forza's presentation, though. GT's crash physics aren't great, but Forza's could do with some work as well.

As for this article, though, it's a waste of internet space, and poorly written to boot. Plus, past performance is no guarantee of the future - GT5 may be top dog now, but Forza 5 might be top dog next go-round. Either way, competition between the two of them should keep us racing fans happy :).

Dee_914046d ago (Edited 4046d ago )

wasnt aware that the buggati veyron was in gt4.. nor the lamborghini countach and diablo.
The standards come from psp not ps2.The models had a higher poly count in the psp version but relatively the same textures thus the low res textures, tho theyve fixed a bit of the textures. But really its like putting liptstick on a pig at this point.Point being they arent ps2 cars but they arent completely current gen either they are in between

riverstars864046d ago

Gotta agree with neoandrew, but Gran Turismo and Forza are great console simulators.

Snookies124046d ago (Edited 4046d ago )

Why will it be? Because it's the next entry in the series maybe?

Cocozero4046d ago

"On a PS Platform" Forgot to add that.

Forza is the definitive racing sim. GT hasn't even surpassed Forza 2 let alone 3 and 4.

jimbobwahey4046d ago (Edited 4046d ago )

It's one thing to start some petty Forza/GT slapfight, but to go so far as to declare Forza the definitive racing sim and ignore the wealth of incredibly well-made racing simulators on the PC is complete madness.

I mean Forza doesn't even simulate varying weather conditions for a start, it's not even in the same league as the more respected heavyweights of the genre.

Then you have flaws such as Forza's active steering assist (hardcoded and separate from the user-controlled driving assists) that sabotage the franchises claims of being a simulator.

Is Forza a fun game? Of course it is! Is it the definitive racing sim? Absolutely not, it lags way too far behind the pack to even be considered a simulator in the first place.

miDnIghtEr20C_SfF4046d ago

Funny how one of the only times review scores DON'T matter, is when it comes to being Forza being better than GT this gen. It's obvious that it is overall better this gen, version after version, yet for the SDF, reviews don't matter on this one.

Of course, LBP reviews matter, Uncharted reviews matter... But for some reason, GT gets a free pass with it's rocking overall score of 84 or 85, or wherever it's at these days.

But GT has the weather and night!!! Still didn't help it review better.

Eyeco4046d ago (Edited 4046d ago )

^^^^^

Forza is a better game overall but GT5 is a better simulator, I think thats what people mean if you read the comments people are comparing the two based on the simulation aspect.

And even still your on an article with the playstation brands biggest franchise, what on earth did you expect ?

TXIDarkAvenger4045d ago

saracasm up until 4. Forza 4 is definitely better than GT5 coming from someone who owns both.

"Forza is the definitive racing sim."

I dunno, Forza feels pretty damn arcadey compared to GT if you ask me. lmao.

Maybe the best racing game on Xbox but definitely not the best racing SIMULATOR on consoles.

Shadow Flare4046d ago

Lets be fair here, forza seems to be under a little stick here. The car physics in Forza do match, or are at least close to what Kazunori Yamauchi has produced in the past with his games

Motor Toon GP to name one

swoosh....joke under the radar...

fabod864046d ago

Coco it's better for you to still with Chanel because gaming isn't for you. ;)

Me-Time4045d ago

haha I knew it was a joke so don't lose all hope for humanity.

Snookies124046d ago (Edited 4046d ago )

You're delusional... You realize this yes? The Forza series has sold "slightly" more than the GT series this generation. Why? Because there have been what? Like 5 Forza games this generation? Whereas Gran Turismo has made 2 games. One of which wasn't even considered a full game... Keep trollin' dude, keep trollin'.

I like Forza, I really do. It's a great racer, but it certainly isn't a racing "sim". It's much more of an arcade experience.

riverstars864046d ago

Sorry, as an owner of both games, I couldn't possibly say that Forza isn't a simulator. It is definitely not an arcade racer, please take off your Sony goggles.

Snookies124045d ago

@riverstars86 - Dude, I've played Forza 4, and I owned Forza 3. I put in at least 40+ hours into the 3rd installment. I really did love the game, but it is NOT a simulator. It certainly has sim aspects, but it's infused with quite a bit of arcade elements (which really do work for the series). I'm saying in terms of simulation alone, it doesn't really compete with the GT series my friend.

Axe994046d ago

Coco, there's just no comparison if you're looking for a sim between GT5 and Forza 4. Forza 4 is a very enjoyable game, and arguably a better 'game' than GT5. However, it's a step below in physics and handling, and a generation behind in sim-style AI. While I was playing Forza on the weekend in a race, in third place, I watched first and second both fly off the final corner at Monza into the wall. It was 'only' the expert series, but as long as the AI behaves like this (and continues to rubber-band), Forza will never be a racing sim - it'll just be an enjoyable racing game :).

DOMination-4046d ago

Im not going to enter this pointless debate but your point about the AI is interesting. For me the AI on GT is terrible. They all just follow the driving line and never make mistakes.

On forza 3/4 if you put pressure on the drivers in front of you, that's when they go off the track. I thought that was pretty cool imo

Me-Time4045d ago

"They all just follow the driving line and never make mistakes."

No, it's not like that. Coming from someone who isn't a moron that repeats cliche BS about GT's shortcomings.

Axe994045d ago

@ DOM - it depends what kind of game you're looking for. If you watch actual motorsport, the vast majority of the time, drivers are actually on the driving line. The AI in GT5 does overtake each other (and you), and deviates from the driving line to do so (better than Forza, I might add - the number of times the AI in that game has tried to drive through me....).

However, the number of overtakes/lap is much closer to the actual number you'd see in actual motorsports - ie, it's exceptional sim AI, but actual motorsports is a very technical and not necessarily razzle-dazzle experience.

Forza, on the other hand, jazzes everything up - even on Professional (which I'm up to now), drivers regularly fly off corners - something you almost never see in actual motorsports unless there are horrendous weather conditions or actual collisions. They also rubber-band terribly - I find I'll blow past the field in the first half of a lap, but it's impossible to get too far in front. Similarly, if I do come off on a corner, I never find myself that far behind. It makes for a far more enjoyable, mass-market game, but it's not good sim AI.

Hence I'd argue Forza is a better game (it's menus and progression also trumps GT5's by a handy margin, and it's got more variety and a better sense of pacing, and there's nothing wrong at all with its racing mechanics, as long as you don't pretend they're a sim), but that GT5 is a far better sim.

Just depends what you're looking for. Both are very enjoyable experiences. I had the misfortune of going into Forza after reading about how great a sim it was, so my first two hours were "WTF?! Who in the blazes thinks this is a sim?" (not unlike my experience with Shift 1 and 2, which also failed hard to live up to Slightly Mad's claims of them being a sim racer), but now that I've adjusted my expectations, and am playing it for what it is, Forza is still an exceptional racing game - it's just not an exceptional racing sim. It doesn't need to be, either - clearly Forza's audience enjoy what they get, and that's what we want (gaming is about fun, after all :)) - they just shouldn't fool themselves into thinking that they're getting a serious sim.

neoandrew4046d ago

Thy are both not simulations.

Real racing simulator are only on pc.

silverbeld4046d ago

What?

Can you name some racing simulator games on pc?

As far I know there is none near as great as GT.

neoandrew4046d ago (Edited 4046d ago )

silverbeld

There IS NO ONE ON ps3 or xbox 360, just NONE.

Grand Turismo is not an simluator, nor forza, they are just arcade...

REAL RACING SIMULATORS PC ONLY: (And only with WHEEL)

iRacing

rFactor

GTR

Live For Speed

Professional simulators, not arcade, and as GT in not simulator it isn't great, it is just not this kind of game, as an arcade it is pretty good i would say.

Hicken4046d ago

Stop it, dude. Just stop.

You know how much of a sim GT is?

IT MAKES PROFESSIONAL RACERS.

YEARLY, WORLDWIDE, Polyphony sponsors a competition to make GT players into REAL RACE CAR DRIVERS.

What kind of "not simulation" does that?

Trying too hard only makes you look like a fool.

neoandrew4046d ago (Edited 4046d ago )

Hicken

I'm talking real world car physics and dynamics, gt/forza are just no real simulation.

There are pc car simulators that you can't even begin to play if you don't have a wheel.

You play games like GT/forza with a PAD and still say it is real car simulation? (the real real simulation)

Now that is just utterly wrong and kind of funny.

IT DOESN'T MATTER THAT IT MAKES PROFESSIONAL RACERS, THE GAME IS NOT AN SIMULATION IT IS PLAIN ARCADE.

But i have forget that n4g is a ps3 fanbase, so GT WILL ALWAYS be the best... no matter what kind of absolutely non debatable proof you would show AS I HAVE SHOWN...

Axe994045d ago

That's a very odd position neoandrew - PC as a platform is a poor one for racing, given it's native controls (mouse/kb) do it far worse than a controller. Clearly, it's better with a wheel, but some of the best gaming racing wheels are made with the PS3 in mind. There's a reason for this ;). That's not to say there aren't exceptional simulators on PC as well, but GT5 _is_ a sim, and a very good one at that. I'm not saying GT is the best - I haven't played all of the games on PC - but GT is most definitely a quality sim.

Yes - GT has assists that can be put on to make it more accessible, but with the assists off, the physics are very, very good, something which has been verified by professional racers.

I understand at this stage of the console cycle that PC gamers are feeling threatened - this has been happening for two decades. Don't worry - PC will keep going strong, as will console. You'll still get your great racing sims, we'll still get ours. That you get more than one is something to be happy about as well :).

DigitalRaptor4046d ago (Edited 4046d ago )

GT is and always has been the better driving sim. That is what it says on the box and that is how it plays. "Boring" to some, but as described. The features speak for themselves.

The reason Forza has been higher rated is because it's reviewed from most sources as a better "game" and more shallow reasons like menu interface and system depth marking GT down.

Granted, Turn 10 have always done an amazing job, but they've always been making a game, whereas Polyphony have always been making a driving sim.

silverbeld4046d ago

@Coco

What on earth are you smoking?

Keep living in a box and you will miss the best. Go explore and you will get richer.

MysticStrummer4046d ago (Edited 4046d ago )

Forza is a sim/arcade hybrid. It may lean more toward sim than arcade, but it still has arcade elements. GT is all sim, and the best of it's kind on consoles. End of story.

Yamauchi on Why Gran Turismo Works in VR Without Making You Sick

Remon: "I didn't expect Gran Turismo 7 to be the most relaxing and soothing game on Playstation VR2 . Yes, it's a high speed racing game with extremely realistic physics. But for me, next to Tetris Effect Connected, it's become the most meditative PSVR 2 experience. What's even more surprising is that Gran Turismo 7 in PSVR 2 doesn't make me sick despite its high speeds.

Gran Turismo series producer Kazunori Yamauchi spoke to me via video chat to discuss why the GT7 feels so enjoyable to drive and what inspired his design choices."

I was very careful not to push myself when i first popped GT7 in VR, by limiting myself to 30 min sessions. I got sick from Drive Club VR. Surprisingly, even after hours of playing on a Gr 3 race, I don’t get sick now.

SullysCigar358d ago

Yamauchi has suggested in the past that choosing a slower car that's a convertible is a good choice for your first drive, because it makes you feel less enclosed, but you still have the frame of reference of the car itself.

When I put friends or family into GT7 on PSVR2, I sit them in front of my wheel, put them in a Mazda MX-5 / Miata, roof off and tuned to remove body roll, improved brakes, slick soft racing tyres and a turbo. This seems perfect, as they spin out less and can get started again more easily if they do. It's not too fast, but fast enough for a first timer. Set up a fan facing them too - that certainly helps.

But people quickly adjust and you just want more variation, speed and handling as you get better at the game. It's the most hooked I've been for years.

XiNatsuDragnel358d ago (Edited 358d ago )

Congratulations Yamauchi

Viljong358d ago

Is vr sickness even a thing. 30 fps games are worse

mandf358d ago

Nothing to do with frames although that has a part. Walking and then saddening stopping messes with your brain for some people. Me included

Viljong357d ago

Switchback is the only game which give me slight nausea same as irl rollercoaster. When it go highspeed and steep downhill comes it feel like my stomach is moving up and im falling off my stool. Interesting that i get the same effect than irl coaster without movement. But i dont call it vr sickness its just very immersive. Other games i play with freemovement and all vignette effects off.

Have GT7 too and playing it without nausea. Its superb in vr mode. Wish i could get the logitech g923 for it. But dualsense is very good aswell and feel right at home after playing forza on series x. Ofc with better haptics that dual sense offer. Only bad thing about gt7 is the unskipable movie when you play it first time. I was getting frustrated after all the motor history it start showing ingame racing i think the whole thingh lasted like 20-30min. Then you get the coffeeshop things and tutorials going on and finally when you get to race you have 120hp hybrid family car.

lucian229357d ago

Any artificial movement can cause motion sickness. Certain games I can't play in vr be cause of it. That's why I prefer games like superhot thst move only when your body moves

kneon357d ago

It's the discrepancy between what you are seeing and feeling and what your brain expects to be seeing and feeling that causes issues in VR. That's why latency is a killer. if you turn your head and the image lags behind it messes you up.

mandf357d ago

Kneon
You're right about that. Gt7 gave me motion sickness in the beginning but went away. I play for 12 hours a day on the weekend with no problems now. Pavlov still gets me. Resident evil is awesome but when I walk it gets me. It gets less over time.

RPGer358d ago

Because the nature of GT games. The game and the camera is static as ever, and it very usable and a prefect way to play racing game with long sessions in VR.

Einhander1971358d ago

I must say I'm still feeling sick when playing Turismo.

Babadook7357d ago (Edited 357d ago )

That’s too bad. Take it slow. Don’t push through uncomfortable feelings. Just play within your limit and build your VR legs over the course of a month or two. Eventually you’ll be able to play much more and with faster cars. It’s worth it, trust me.

I know you and a lot of people are excited for VR but dont sleep on sophy, sophy is the real game changer here!

After giving sophy a run last night, i can safely say the actual racing in future GT's is going to be Fu***** amazing!!!

even on intermediate on some tracks the AI was coming back at me on my waiting for me to slip, attacking the space if i left the door open for them, honestly felt like i was racing against people and not some very limited AI that once i passed them they may as well have been eliminated from the race like GT ai normally is.

pump it up to expert and its a real challenge to stay ahead, the next level up from expert man the AI kicked my ass, like badly.

i remember when sophy was first annouced all the nay sayers said its a pipe dream and we will never see it implemented and here we are a yr later and sophy is being tested in game for us to try out and is every good as whats been promised.

VR plus racing against sophy and wowww your not gonna feal like your actually racing for real anywhere else outside of gt.

sophy will change the game in gt8

S2Killinit419d ago

Hm I didnt realize it was like that. I didnt even know why there was so much hype about it. But thanknyou for explaining that. I mean I get it now.

But I’ll be seeing it in action tomorrow! Woot woot.

Flawlessmic419d ago

It's only for a limited time and only has 4 races but I encourage you and everyone else try it and see the difference compared to the normal Ai.
