Tomb Raider vs. Uncharted: The Comparison We Had To Make

It can be a bit difficult to talk about the new Tomb Raider without also talking about Uncharted. Naughty Dog's PS3 series has always had a lot of Tomb Raider in its DNA, and Crystal Dynamics' new Lara Croft adventure has clearly been taking notes from Uncharted.

I think that Tomb Raider is a more refined game, with far, far better writing and overall narrative but MY GOD, the level design in Tomb Raider is frankly fantastic. It's not a full Metroid-vania experience but I love how large and open ended the levels feel.

PSVita4053d ago (Edited 4053d ago )

I haven't played it yet but people shouldn't pretend like this game would be around if uncharted wasn't so successful. It came out after the entire UC trilogy, id hope id be better in someway.

LOGICWINS4053d ago (Edited 4053d ago )

Uncharted 2 raised the bar for the action/adventure genre. Thats unquestionable. However, that doesn't take anything away from Tomb Raider. Your SUPPOSED to look at the best and find ways to improve upon the formula and make it your own.

I don't see anything wrong with that personally.

Every platformer in existence wouldn't be around if it weren't for Mario, but does that take anything away from gems like Outland or Closure?

PSVita4053d ago (Edited 4053d ago )

@logicwins I agree 100%. I see nothing wrong with taking something and adding/fixing it to make it better. I remember the original tomb raiders and they were good but seeing how great UC2 came out defiantly inspired the devs in some way. Drake wasnt the first treasure hunter ever so ND got the idea from some where too but their take on the series it was pretty original. I'm glad to see that both are doing well either way.

Btw my first comment wasn't directed @rit. I came to here to read about TR but most the comments are just bashing UC for some reason.

"So we go from Tomb Raider to Uncharted back to Tomb Raider. The circle is complete"

Not really because in my opinion Tomb Raider, despite being a good game still didn't scratch the surface of something like Uncharted 3 or even Uncharted 2.

I don't see anything which the new Tomb Raider did better....if your going to say "Well she can explore more...she has more freedom" then I'm sorry but that's not something ND was going for anyway with Uncharted.

I don't even feel like Uncharted copied Tomb Raider, it was trying to be a movie and it's obviously ND copied Indiana Jones more then Tomb Raider. The things people compared between the two is that they are both treasure hunters and that the platforming is similar but you can't do realistic platforming any other way so of course Drakes platforming is going to look like Tomb Raiders, same goes with Prince of Persia's or Assassins Creed, they are realistic games, not like they can double jump.

"that Naughty Dog decided it was worth digging into his backstory. And, to be honest, I wasn't all that interested even when they did."

What you don't want to know about Drakes past....why, it's one of the many un answered things in Uncharted. Drake is a complete mystery but with Lara we know her backstory, hell it's been changed three times and we still know it.

"Yes! Or, well, I've spent more time shooting people than raiding tombs, but, you know."

Oh Patricia...even when you havent played the old games you actually think thats what you call raiding tombs in the new games. You don't even raid any in the main story, they are optional and the puzzles are easy as hell. If you actually played the old ones I bet you would think very differently.

I hate Kotaku but Patricia is so out of touch with most games, she was the one that started that thing about Sony being sexist because they had no women at the PS4 reveal show

"Patricia: Oh, are some people saying it's not a Tomb Raider game? Wow."

Yet you've said this...

"Ah, that's interesting. This is actually my first Tomb Raider, so I've never experienced the franchise as it used to be!"

So don't call people when you don't know what were going on about.

Hufandpuf4053d ago

Yeah, Patricia is a little out of touch in this article. I hate when they interview people with no past experience, but I guess she was the only other person in their office that beat the game.

Root4053d ago

She's always out of touch, she must of joined recently since I've never seen her on the site before but she seems like someone they've desperetly hired.

Seriously why hire people like her if they don't know anything about games

I thought he was old but apparently she's 22...older then me and she's never played the old TR games. Come on...

WrAiTh Sp3cTr34053d ago

Root...you sound bitter but that's just my opinion. You call someone out of touch but you claim Tomb Raider doesn't scratch the surface of what the UC series has done. That sorta comment makes me think you're the one out of touch. I know there are a lot of UC fans, I've been a fan before it was even popular, but people can have their opinions just like you but does it call for insulting people and then turn around stooping to their level to which you think you are above? My point is both franchises are great and as it stands neither would be where they're at without the other. But your opinion isn't the end all be all so stop acting like it.

Root4053d ago (Edited 4053d ago )

@WrAiTh Sp3cTr3

How the hell am I "stooping to her level"....what because I said she sounds out of touch....which she is. She even said she never played the old games so there's the evidence to back that up.

Oh and it makes me out of touch because I said the new TR dosen't scratch the surface of Uncharted 2. It doesn't, it's my opinion, it tried to copy Uncharted instead of being it;s own game. Least I've actually played on the old games

Oh and I don't get how I sound bitter, I'm just getting sick of this debate when some people make it out it's better then Uncharted 2 when it's not. I love the game but it has it's faults. Hell I even found Uncharted 3 more enjoyable, it even had a good online that I would play more on then TR so there's a bonus.

I never make it out that my opinion is "the end all be" so just stop it....your being immature and trying to pick a fight. Probably why you only have two bubbles so I;m not surprised.

Lvl_up_gamer4053d ago (Edited 4053d ago )

Both are great. Uncharted 2 is my favorite of the series but I found myself really enjoying Tomb Raider more. I felt it had a much more mature tone and was more interested in Lara's Story then I was in Drake's.

Graphics wise I still give the edge to Uncharted but Tomb Raider is still a fantastically looking game with some set pieces that were just amazing. For example when Lara slowly raises her head from the river of blood. Too awesome for words.

Bottom line, Tomb Raider was a much more enjoyable game and story for me.

KEEPNITREAL4053d ago

I agree %100 agree with you, I love my Uncharted games , but somethings about this Tombraider game made me enjoy it more. The bad thing is you can't say it here at N4G cause of those sony fanboys will eat you up .For them nothing in this world is better than Sony this and Sony that. As for me I don't care I say it like I see it !! Afterall it's just a damn opinion !! I do expect Uncharted 4 to be in a different level that's for sure , but let's see.

dalibor4053d ago (Edited 4053d ago )

You can say what ever you want to say here on N4G. We all have a voice and it should be heard so long as it's in good constructed manner I would assume. I still haven't played the new Tomb Raider but I probably would like it as well because it's a new adventure, similar to how every entry of the Uncharted franchise was a new journey and I for one definitely enjoyed it. And who knows U4 might take some elements from the TR game and vice versa, I think as long as the game is fun to play there's no harm in that. Game on!

I do agree that Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness was the worse one 😂 I remember playing some of it and I took it back. That game was just awful in every way. I bought it used at gamestop and glad they had that 7 day return policy for used games 😂

Pyrofire9554d ago

Would it be worth saying why?

ZeekQuattro54d ago

Simple. He's been hating on the Tomb Raider reboots for years. I can't imagine seeing them at the top of a best TR game list let alone being on the list in general sitting well with him because of it.

-Foxtrot54d ago

Zeek

“Hating”

No no, just pointing out how TR mutated into a generic action adventure game losing the appeal of what it once was when it was more about puzzles and platforming over going Rambo, slaughtering waves of enemies

But hey, continue being a dick and speaking about me like I’m not going to see the comment.

MeatyUrologist54d ago

Foxtrot, I'm curious if you have played the most recent games. Sure the 2013 reboot was hugely focused on combat, but each follow up became less and less about combat to the point where outside of a few large scale story missions I don't even remember combat being a part of shadow of the tomb raider. Shadow was so puzzle focused it actually was a bit much for me and I love the TR puzzles.

I still feel like Rise was the best of the series and I was a huge fan of the originals. To me it struck the perfect balance of exploration, platforming, puzzles, and combat. Not saying your opinion is wrong I'm just curious what you think they should have done different. Games do need to evolve somewhat to stay relevant. Would you prefer small linear jumping platform levels like the original?

RavenWolfx55d ago

I would agree Rise for 1 and the reboot as 2. Shadow is a bit high, though.

Sonic188155d ago (Edited 55d ago )

I think Shadow wasn't even develop by crystal dynamics. I thought it was the worse in the new trilogy

Pyrofire9554d ago

That's right. Shadow was developed by Eidos Montreal who who went and made Marvels Guardians of the Galaxy next. (Great game)
Meanwhile after Rise of the Tomb Raider, Crystal Dynamics made Marvels Avengers. (bad game)

MeatyUrologist54d ago

Agrees. First two are correct but Shadow should be around 5-6.

terstomp54d ago

For me, Legend should be alot higher (along with the other two ). Shadow, I enjoyed it, but has too much has fluff, as modern games tend to do. Playing the remastered series, and apart from the controls, is very good.

jznrpg54d ago

I really enjoyed the first 2 games, Legend and the first of the reboots and the rest I didn’t get into so I never finished.

robtion54d ago

Completely subjective list. I really liked Underworld, I preferred Lara's design. That said I loved the horror/uncharted feel of the reboot. I think all the TR games have strengths and weaknesses. None are objectively better in every way.
