Much like any other hobby that has ever existed, there are various levels of pride and appreciation in the world of video games. And in similar fashion there are a distinguished few who show their passion and commitment to their favorite hobby much more than anyone else. These are the people who go beyond the basic boundaries of enjoying the experience offered by their favorite video games and instead turn it into something more. I've always been kind of annoyed by this term. Stuff like this is entirely subjective, but society puts labels on groups of people for targeting them easily.

Great article though, really insightful on the topic.

Couldn't agree more !

Most people refer to themselves as 'hardcore gamers' when they play Fifa, CoD etc and slam Kinect games as casual for example. They are the core audience, mainstream, nothing more.

When I think back hardcore gaming used to mean paying absurd money for an import that was in a foreign language (usually Japanese) that you couldn't understand but wanted to play the game that bad. Or paying £1000 to own a copy of Metal Slug on the Neo-Geo.

These days it usually means people who spend a lot of time playing games.

I always thought the only hardcore players are those that play MMORPGs like Warcraft. I mean, I have a cousin that played the game 24/7 for 3 years straight in his parent's basement; the only times he moves is to get food and take a dump. How can you get more hardcore than that?

Yeah, It used to be just a diehard love for gaming (still is in my opinion). Arcades, consoles and all things gaming related. Not a dedication to a brand or countless hours spent playing a particular franchise or genre.
